My friends and I visited on Saturday night and booked a table for 4 at 19:45. We chose 6 starters and 2 mains for the four of us and this was plenty of food. We chose the cauliflower, prawns, beef, chilli chicken, chilli paneer and the squid for starters and 2 dosas for mains. We then shared the trio of desserts which was amazing We had a bottle of red wine and few beers and the bill was £100 Waiters were very friendly, restaurant is small but was packed out with a great atmosphere. The food was incredible and will absolutely be visiting again

We came in after work one night after my partner had found it online. Staff were very welcoming and as we weren't sure how much to order suggested various combinations of small plates, dosa and from the pot options. We decided to go for 4 small plates and a dosa. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered especially the cauliflower and the beef dosa. Lovely pick me up in the middle of the week. We will be back!

Hidden away, my housemate and i (locals) ventured in on a whim and left very very happy with the food and service. The food was absolutely delicious, cooked and prepared to be as close as the original southern Indian dishes as possible, and the service was great; the owner told us all about the food and the region as he was deeply passionate about the subject. I cannot reccomend it enough (particularly the lamb Biriyani and the mango lassi, both bursting with so much flavour). This place is an absolute hidden gem and a must must must go! Thanks for a surprising and lovely evening!

Finally got around to visiting Amma’s Canteen and all I can say it was worth the wait. The greeting when we arrived was warm and genuine. Service throughout was friendly and not rushed. The menu was explained and we ordered drinks , the IPA was absolutely divine . We ordered four starters and a main to share and we were full by the end but made room for a shared sweet. I think the finest compliment I can pay to the food is that it is very rare to leave a restaurant after having six dishes and we were unable to pick an outstanding one as they were all outstanding. Thank you for a wonderful food and dining experience. Looking forward to our next visit

The service is attentive and respectful, with servers on hand to explain any dishes with confidence. The menu is easy to follow and well described, and the dishes are delightfully unique and refreshing. The food is -ALWAYS- prepared incredibly well, served in a range of dishes and plates to suit the order. The food arrived piping hot, full of flavour and the portions are generous. If Amma's Canteen was in the city centre it would be one of the most popular in Manchester - it is a unique and wonderful place to dine.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. You are recommended to order 3-4 starter portions and a main to share-perfect if you love sharing plates and lots of different tastes. We loved everything, and could have chosen more, so will return. Not fussy, just friendly.

Although the atmosphere and the staff were so lovely, the food was sadly very disappointing. Firstly we were served gone-off sour mango lassi which fizzled in our mouths - they ofc did apologise for this and brought fresh mango lassi 30 minutes later (was on the house) which was okay in taste. Food was bland or had far too much masala, and as a south indian I can honestly say this food was not authentic, did not have the correct ratios of spices. The dosa was soft and floppy when it should be crispy. The vadai was undercooked, and the malabar roti was dry and tough as opposed to fluffy and falling apart. The chicken ghassi had far too much masala and the fish curry was overpowering. I hope they improve on their recipes as the concept is lovely and has potential and the staff were delightful.

Hi apporva Thanks for your visit and writing a review for us. We are glad you have liked our concept and our service. We are sorry about the mango lassi which we corrected straight away and replaced it and not charged you. We struggle to understand in one sentence you say our food was bland and overpowering with spices. You also say it’s not authentic. We are not sure what do you mean authentic. We try our best Most of our customers like us few don’t That’s nature of our business. Thanks for visiting us

I visited here with my husband and son for a coming out of shielding treat, we have eaten here several times before and were not sure how the lockdown may have affected the service and food, we did not need to worry it was excellent as usual. There were obviously fewer tables inside 4, so a lot more room between the customers, even so, it was a busy evening with our party another couple and a family group inside, there was a larger group sitting outside as it was a fine evening. The menu has altered a little but for the better, it included new dishes introduced for a takeaway menu used during the lockdown, which was explained by the extremely friendly owner. We picked 6 small dishes from the street cat section of the menu, Masala Vadai a falafel dish, Caulifower Bezule a new dish to us that was delicious and is now one of our favourites, Poucha Vendaka a crispy Okra dish, Beef Sukka, Madras Masala Mussels and Sauteed Prawns another new dish for us. All were excellent tasty, with a hint of spice nothing too hot for those with a delicate palate. We shared two new to us main dishes from the curry pot, a Thalassery Lamb Briyane which was a new takeaway addition and an Alleppey Fish Curry using sea bass both served with Malabar Parathas instead of rice. Both were delicious and are highly recommended. Before arriving we were in two minds whether to order 3 mains but from past experience, we remembered that three mains would be too much and result in wasted food. We were not disappointed by the excellence of the food or the service from the friendly and welcoming staff, we left feeling happy having had our first family night out since lockdown. We cannot recommend Amma's Canteen highly enough, we prefer to eat in rather than takeaway as we feel the food may not travel well a fact the owner also mentioned when explaining the new dishes. We had Cobra beer with our meal which to our mind is appropriate with Indian food. The bill including drinks was a reasonable £85.

We eat at Amma’s regularly, the service is consistently great always so welcoming. The food is just amazing, most stuff gluten and dairy free which means less stress for me. The beef dosa is a must try!

We made a reservation for Amma’s Canteen following recommendations from a friend and it definitely lived up to the hype. The menu is extensive and there is a lot to choose from, if you are someone who enjoys Indian food but perhaps not the spiciest - then there is still plenty for you to choose from too so don’t be put off. The owner was very informative, he explained the importance of traditional recipes with the freshest of ingredients, he also explained how gluten/wheat is not a natural ingredient and it is rarely used within India food - hence why nearly every dish is GF. He was very proud of their home made recipes and it definitely shows in the taste and quality of the food/service you receive. I could have listened to him talk for hours. There is nowhere else like it in Manchester so try and get a table before the summer is out.

Absolutely superb. We saw Amma's Canteen on Come Dine With Me - The Professionals, and we immediately fell for the genuine charm of the owners and the look and description of their food. We simply had to give it a go, and two days later we were there. The food and the service did not disappoint. I hate cauliflower with a passion and for starters my wife ordered the cauliflower bezule. I ordered the sautéed prawns. We shared, and I have to say that the cauliflower bezule was absolutely amazing. I'm a convert. The prawns were beautiful too, but the cauliflower ... Wow! For mains, my wife ordered the Allepey fish curry and I had the chicken thoran dosa. The dosa is something I have never had before. It was delicious but my wife's choice was amazing. The fish curry was outstanding. We shared a dessert of the poached plantain. Again, this did not disappoint. It was beautiful. Our waiter (didn't get his name; a chap with a beard) was really passionate about the menu and his knowledge of it was second to none. He explained the dishes in detail with such vigour and excited body language that his belief in the food was clear to see. This belief is not misplaced. We met the owners also, who came to chat with us. They are such lovely, warm people and they helped make our experience all the more special. In all, exceptionally authentic food and fantastic service. We will be back.

Fancied some South Indian food on a visit to the city so found this place through an internet search. The quality of the food definitely lives up to the positive reviews. The dosa was very good (for £12, I expected it to be!) as was everything else we ordered. The ambience itself was ok, but nothing special. Easy to park outside and staff (there were only 2 on a Friday evening...) were friendly. But as the restaurant got busier, service got slower and they can definitely do with more waiting staff at busy periods. What left a sour taste in the mouth was when I asked for the 10% service charge to be removed (which they add on to all bills regardless of the size of the dining party which I think is very cheeky!), I was asked if there was anything wrong with the service and this felt like I was being questioned on why I did not want to pay. I am one of those people that refuses to be forced to pay a pre-defined amount, added to the bill. I would rather leave a cash tip based on the service I received. A service charge is justifiable for a large dining party but given there were only 4 of us, I didn't think a 10% service charge was in any way justifiable. Safe to say, when we left the restaurant after this, there was no "thank you" or bye" from either of the 2 waiting staff. Unlikely to return as there are other options for South Indian food in the city.

I have no idea how this place has good reviews. Four of us ate here and very little of the food that was served was actually edible. Most of the plates were cremated and when our friend complained we were told that is was meant to be like this. Even though nearly all of it went back uneaten we still had to pay the full bill. Shockingly bad. Never again.

We do regularly eat out, and we will admit to having just selected a reasonably priced, local and “gluten free” friendly establishment on Deliveroo. But what we got was so much more! Just incredibly tasty, well presented and hot! For a takeaway this is usually one of the biggest let downs. Being Coeliac, I have to be very careful, but Indian cuisine is often a great choice, as most floors used are naturally gluten free. The falafel style fried pearls of heaven were a particular highlight. As well as the beef curry, and spicy wedges We will definitely be coming back!!

Our saute prawn starter was flavourful the prawns were beautifully cooked, not tough at all. My Chicken Thoran Dosa was a revelation! I I've has Dosa before but never like this. Light and crispy the filling was delishous. Our Thalassery lamb biriani was wonderful, beautifully tender moist lamb, perfectly cooked rice. I now understand why biriani is traditionally served at celebrations. So far beyond the birianis that I have been served in the restaurants at home in the Midlands, Soooo good I was planning on kidnapping the chef!! Lol 😆 I can not recommend this restaurant enough the service and food are fantastic and I will be going again the next time I come to Manchester.
