We had been looking forward to the Afternoon Tea as a pre-Christmas treat but we left feeling disappointed. Venue: It is really nicely decorated and the toilet was clean and tidy. Thankfully, it wasn’t busy and that suited us, ‘atmosphere’-wise. There was a fair bit...of ‘bustle’ from the attached pub though. Food: There was nothing wrong with the food. It was all tasty enough but, at the same time, it felt a little lacking. The sandwich fillings were uninspired; hummus & salad, cream cheese & salad, smashed avocado & salad. All of these could have easily (and probably did) come from tubs. One of my sandwiches had a stale bread top and the bottom piece of bread was only half the width, of its counterpart, and barely kept the filling inside. The cauliflower wings came with a little pot of dip each, whereas the scones only had one pot of jam and ‘clotted’ cream between us. By the time we reached the scones, the ‘clotted’ cream had un-clotted and was like water. The cauliflower wings would have felt more in keeping with Afternoon Tea had they been cauliflower bites. The sweet treats were all tasty enough but the Christmas cake was very heavy and could have done with being a smaller portion. It would have been nice to have the copious amounts of berries, dotted about, as shown on the Afternoon Tea page. Drink: The pots of tea were huge, yet only two sugars were provided. We asked for more but only received another 4. I would normally put two sachets in each cup, as they are only the equivalent of 1/2 spoons, so opted to ration them instead of asking for more. Better for my waistline, I suppose. The tea did not stay warm, for the duration of the meal, and the last two cups had definitely passed their prime. Smaller pots of tea, with top-ups of hot water, would have been a better option. Service: Apologies, I do not know your names. The male server was really nice and even asked if we wanted to get fresh plates and cutlery when we reached the cakes. Unfortunately, the female server was a tad overbearing, especially when it came to paying the bill. She approached the table three times, after delivering the bill, even bringing the card machine to the table on her third visit. My husband was using the toilet and was the one who was paying. It’s not as if there was a queue outside and we were hogging a table. It felt rude to be approached so many times. ***Be advised, a discretionary service charge of 10% is added to the bill. Nowhere on the Afternoon Tea page is this mentioned (although it is noted in the small print on the main menu page) so it was a bit of a surprise.*** Overall: Sadly, the negatives outweighed the positives for us. We would not return as the Afternoon Tea wasn’t anything special, and did not appreciate the harassment regarding paying the bill.More

Had a wonderful pre gig meal at the Allotment. We were served by Mike who was very friendly and attentive. We opted for the winter sharing platter which was like a mini Christmas dinner. The miso mushrooms are an umami delight! Very reasonably priced also....Will definitely come again.More

We had a reservation for 6 for a business lunch and had heard great things. Unfortunately this was not the experience we had. We were kept waiting for an hr before we asked why our food was taking so long, apparently our order had not...made it to the kitchen. Then food began to arrive but items were missing, 3 members of our party ordered the small plates on the offer and the kitchen assumed these were starters and hadn’t even started the rest of our food. Our food came out over 30 mins later. Some members of our party had to leave as the service had taken so long. The server was left all alone with no support from colleagues which was so poor. We complained again and they offered to discount our drinks. However, majority of our drinks were covered in the deal so it wasn’t compensation at all. We challenged this and eventually they discounted 20% off the bill. We asked to speak to a Manager who came over, we explained all the problems we had experienced and he just did not care, not even when we highlighted that our server had no support . Would not recommend or return.More

Would not recommend if you have any allergies or intolerances. I'm coeliac (gluten free) which I explained to the waiter on arrival and each time I ordered any food. We shared some cauliflower wings and fritters to start. For the main I ordered the mushroom...bourguignon which when it arrived had bread on the plate. I checked if this bread was gluten free with the waitrose and she said she would check and came back to say it was gluten free. My instinct told me it wasn't so I asked my partner to try it who said if it was gluten free then it was very good for gluten free bread. I decided not to eat the bread or any of the meal it touched. The group behind us had a sharing platter which was served with bread, it looked the same the bread I was served but I asked them and theirs wasn't gluten free. I then asked a different waitress if their gluten free bread and normal bread looked the same which she said they didn't. I explained the above and she looked mortified. All very apologetic as they had served normal bread. The staff were very kind and sorry but sadly I wouldn't trust eating there again. I'm unsure if the rest of the meal was even gluten free as I've woken up with a coeliac response, including mouth ulcers and swollen joints. A shame as I understand the whole place use to be gluten free so had been recommended on many coeliac bloggers etc.More

They have a good selection of dishes. Some are very tasty (like the miso mushrooms), but some are disappointingly poor in comparison (like the pumpkin rosemary risotto which was dry, undercooked, came with no pumpkin and barely tasted of much). Very odd to have such...a contrast in food quality from a single restaurant. Considering we were one of only 3 tables in, food service was quite slow. Considering the price you'd expect much better consistency in quality. The general vibes are off too. Cute decor but sometimes music is playing, sometimes it's deathly silent for 10 mins .More

Booked for Sunday lunch. We arrived on time, seated then had to wait 15 minutes for a menu. The staff didn’t seem to know what they were doing. I asked one of them about a particular item on the menu and she didn’t have a...clue. We had to ask for a drink. We waited 45 minutes for our food. The Sunday lunch was ok, not much flavour. I work in hospitality and it was agony watching the staff. There was no organisation at all. Such a shame because the restaurant is lovely but the service and food was a complete let down. We won’t be going againMore

The restaurant is lovey, it is clean and beautifully decorated. The staff are friendly and attentive. The menu looks really good, as someone who is vegan and also GF it looked like a great menu. Two of us had the ‘Tofu Ham’ which was just...a slice of plain tofu that had been shallow fried and served with 4 Brussels sprouts and 4 carrots and some little roast potatoes. Not a single thing in this meal had had any sort of seasoning, it was probably the most boring meal I have ever had at a restaurant, there was nothing wrong with it other than it was boring which is why I have given the review 3 stars. Someone else had the tacos but again, they were ok but didn’t come with anything other than the tacos, maybe a bit of salad would have been nice. We all had sticky toffee pudding which was quite nice. Someone on another table had an afternoon tea and that actually looked very nice.More

Decided to book here for my partner’s birthday as he is vegan so naturally we were excited. I read some mixed reviews so maybe wasn’t expecting…the most amazing vegan food ever but at least expecting the bare minimum of a pleasant dining experience. We arrived...and there were 3 staff in a smallish restaurants who could clear see us and we could see our table but it took AGES for us to be seated despite our reservation. They clearly saw us and we we were waiting for a while even the customers were looking up at us. Eventually they took our name. Even after this it still took a while to be seated. We could even see our table was clearly empty and we might as well have seated ourselves. Eventually we were seated with not even an apology for waiting. But nonetheless we were still trying to remain positive. The manager gave us our menus and said he’d give us a few minutes before asking about drinks It took at least 10-15 minutes to be asked for our order, eventually the waitress came to ask for our food order to which I replied “please can we at least order some drinks first? “ she clearly looked embarrassed and it wasn’t her fault. Just bad management. The wine took a while to land on our table and our water was forgotten. The wine glasses were also so dirty but we didn’t want to be those people and I feel like the waitress already felt bad for us. Thank god the wine was delicious though! I would recommend the primitivo! And That was probably the only good thing about this place. The starters were average and overpriced. You have better vegan food options at establishments that aren’t even catering to them. But the worst bit was the main. The jackfruit tacos was mainly bean and little bit of jackfruit and the taco shell tasted stale and exactly like they were from old El Paso. But this didn’t compare to the tofu ham that my poor partner was served. We’ve never sent food back even when having below average food in the past but this was basically a disgrace and should never have left the kitchen. The winter vegetables that were described were literally just sad Brussels sprouts. I’m not kidding. Not even carrots, or any other veg. If it’s gonna be Brussels sprouts then don’t say “winter vegetables” so we know not to order this. The caramelised onion mash had no caramelised onion in it or softness to it and was the worst mash we’d ever seen. And the tofu ham was basically a big block of tofu with no marinade or maple taste that was described on the menu. Not to mention we were convinced the roast potatoes were frozen aunt Bessie’s. I had to give my partner my tacos because at least they were edible and enjoyable. We tried to give the tofu ham a go, bless him my partner kept trying but my partner was so shocked and amazed we just unfortunately had to send it back as it was not edible. Please note we didn’t enjoy any bit of making the staff feel bad or the awkwardness of this whole experience. Even if the main wasn’t amazing but edible that would have been fine. This dish shouldn’t be on the menu and the description shouldn’t be a lie of what it actually is. I really think the chef needs to rethink his dishes and I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t even vegan. Thankfully the manager and staff were nice despite the slow service and lack of urgency. The manager did adjust our bill and apologised and the staff all seemed lovely but overall I wouldn’t ever recommend this place to anyone and it’s just a shame as it’s supposed to be representation of vegan food and ambassador for veganism.More
