We had been looking forward to the Afternoon Tea as a pre-Christmas treat but we left feeling disappointed. Venue: It is really nicely decorated and the toilet was clean and tidy. Thankfully, it wasn’t busy and that suited us, ‘atmosphere’-wise. There was a fair bit...of ‘bustle’ from the attached pub though. Food: There was nothing wrong with the food. It was all tasty enough but, at the same time, it felt a little lacking. The sandwich fillings were uninspired; hummus & salad, cream cheese & salad, smashed avocado & salad. All of these could have easily (and probably did) come from tubs. One of my sandwiches had a stale bread top and the bottom piece of bread was only half the width, of its counterpart, and barely kept the filling inside. The cauliflower wings came with a little pot of dip each, whereas the scones only had one pot of jam and ‘clotted’ cream between us. By the time we reached the scones, the ‘clotted’ cream had un-clotted and was like water. The cauliflower wings would have felt more in keeping with Afternoon Tea had they been cauliflower bites. The sweet treats were all tasty enough but the Christmas cake was very heavy and could have done with being a smaller portion. It would have been nice to have the copious amounts of berries, dotted about, as shown on the Afternoon Tea page. Drink: The pots of tea were huge, yet only two sugars were provided. We asked for more but only received another 4. I would normally put two sachets in each cup, as they are only the equivalent of 1/2 spoons, so opted to ration them instead of asking for more. Better for my waistline, I suppose. The tea did not stay warm, for the duration of the meal, and the last two cups had definitely passed their prime. Smaller pots of tea, with top-ups of hot water, would have been a better option. Service: Apologies, I do not know your names. The male server was really nice and even asked if we wanted to get fresh plates and cutlery when we reached the cakes. Unfortunately, the female server was a tad overbearing, especially when it came to paying the bill. She approached the table three times, after delivering the bill, even bringing the card machine to the table on her third visit. My husband was using the toilet and was the one who was paying. It’s not as if there was a queue outside and we were hogging a table. It felt rude to be approached so many times. ***Be advised, a discretionary service charge of 10% is added to the bill. Nowhere on the Afternoon Tea page is this mentioned (although it is noted in the small print on the main menu page) so it was a bit of a surprise.*** Overall: Sadly, the negatives outweighed the positives for us. We would not return as the Afternoon Tea wasn’t anything special, and did not appreciate the harassment regarding paying the bill.More
