Very good food and good service with attention to detail faultless. Can easily recommend the food and the chilli beef delicious also quality cut of beef. Price not over expensive compared to some places we have tried in Chinatown. Great drinks choice too.

I love Hunan! We visit every few weeks and the food is consistently delicious. Lamb ribs, aubergine, countryside style pork and stir fried soft noodles with my favourite green chillies on this visit and every item was exceptional. I have travelled extensively throughout China over...the years and visiting Hunan restaurant brings back many fond memories. The staff are also incredibly sweet and attentive. We'll be returning before Christmas for the stunning Chairman Mao Pork and duck in beer sauce! Thanks as always Hunan restaurant!More

Was in Manchester for a conference staying at a hotel nearby so ventured into this place. The dining room is up a flight of stairs. The menu offers authentic Hunanese cuisine which is quite impressive. We ordered Chairman Maos braised pork, Singaore vermicelli noodles, morning...glory (I was very impressed that the restaurant was actually able to get morning glory) and taro and rib soup. The dishes we ordered are mild - usually Hunanese dishes are known to be on the spicy side and there certainly were more fiery options on the venue. Staff advised that the chef is Hunanese. Service was efficient and the restaurant was very popular. the menu offered non Hunanese options too (eg the Singapore vermicelli noodles are of course not of Hunanese origin) Would highly recommend a visit for those who are interested in sampling Hunanese cuisine as it is very rare to find Hunanese orientated restaurant.More

It’s fair to say the Hunan is not the most inviting of restaurants. As with a number of Chinatown places, it’s on the first floor. So, that’s up a fairly steep, dimly lit, staircase (which doesn’t have a handrail for the first quarter). Then down...a dimly lit corridor, into the main space, where you are greeted by one of the several smiley women servers. Put the entrance aside, and you may be in for a bit of a treat if you’re looking for something different from the mainly Cantonese restaurants in the area. Now, I have to say, the Hunan was not our first choice but the Little Yang Sing had a 20 minute wait for tables and I’m not willing to stand around for that amount of time. There’s a perhaps interesting comparison between the two places. With what seems to be the permanent demise of the once internationally known Yang Sing on Princess Street, the Little Yang Sing is probably now the longest standing Cantonese in the area. It attracts an almost entirely Anglo clientele. In contrast, most diners in the Hunan were young folk of East Asian heritage, as they have been on the couple of occasions that I’ve previously eaten here. So, as to the food. As suggested by the name, the dishes are mainly Hunanese main courses, with a few starters There’s a handful of Cantonese for the less adventurous, which suited my partner. So, for her, vegetarian spring rolls and a vegetable chow main, with crispy noodles. Both perfectly fine if, truth be told, a bit uninteresting. For me, a starter of chunks of raw cucumber, dressed with soy sauce, chopped garlic and finely sliced chilli. It’s light, fresh and the chilli gives something of a wake-up call. My main course was a repeat of the dish I ate when we were last here in 2021 – “Chairman Mao’s Red Braised Pork”. It’s delicious – very fatty piggy cooked so long that the fat becomes meltingtly soft – slippery and unctuous even. The texture may not be to everyone’s taste but I love it. There’s red pepper and a deeply savoury sauce. And lots of garlic – whole cloves, at least a bulb. I’m not sure how often I’d need to eat this to become bored. Certainly not once every couple of years. Note to self: come back to the Hunan soon.More

Continuing the trend in the UK for the availability of regional Chinese food Hunan is definitely worth a visit. Three excellent dishes: smoked tofu and celery was perfectly prepared. Tofu slightly softer than most smoked tofu. The real star was the tripe and garlic stalks....Chinese cuisine can make stars out of unfashionable parts of the animal. This was as good a tripe dish that I’ve ever eaten. The chicken gizzard dish was also very good but the pieces were too small making consumption rather fiddly. Overall this is a great restaurant if you like spicy classic hunan cuisine.More

Lovely chow mien. Great soups. Traditional unusual dishes. Really good. Staff very good. The restaurant is a bit dated and dark. But food is great.

Absolutely fantastic authentic freshly cooked food. The menu is extensive and my wife and I ordered so much we came away with a large doggy bag! I've been to all of the Chinese restaurants in Manchester city centre and Hunan is by far the best...in my view, and I am basing this on having been to many parts of China a number of times. Lamb ribs and Chairman Mao pork were particular standouts for me. All capped by the extremely friendly and helpful service and a clean, relaxed environment.More

My experience of this restaurant is enhanced by the many visits I have made to China. The food is authentic and delicious. I have read several negative reviews and suspect that they have been from those who normally eat the fare from the likes of...the typical Chinese 'chippy'. This is my favourite Chinese restaurant in the UK. Geoff HowardMore

Went here spontaneously after wandering round Chinatown looking for somewhere to eat and so glad we did. Have to call out our waitress, Yilin who was smiley, happy and helpful. She really made our night. Based on her recommendation we had the most tasty meal,...including lamb ribs, which were out of this world. Will be back!More

It was dark. It was cold. And it was very, very wet. A sensible couple would have stayed home and got a Deliveroo instead of driving into the city. But that’s not us. We’d said we were going to the Hunan, so we were going...to the Hunan. It’s years since we were last here – five since I went for lunch, ten since we came for dinner. Little has changed. It was quite busy with only one other table occupied by Anglos. Now, I’m not one to assume that the ethnic make-up of a restaurant’s customers is a confirmation of quality. If it was, then Harvesters would have Michelin stars. But it can be an indication, if folk of Chinese heritage eat here, rather than one of the other nearby places. The menu is shorter than many in Chinatown and, unsurprisingly, leans towards Hunan dishes, with the significant use of the bits of animals that most Anglos (us included) would find challenging. The starter list seems particularly short and is mainly the Cantonese dishes you can find anywhere. And the Hunanese starter I’d fancied on the online menu wasn’t on the real menu, so we decided to just have main courses. “Chairman Mao’s Red Braised Pork” is a dish specific to the region and one I’ve eaten before, here and at a now closed place in London. Unlike most belly pork dishes where the texture is quite firm, the long braising in soy and spices, makes the meat soft and, in particular, the fat unctuous and gelatinous, which may not be to everyone’s taste but is to mine. There’s a late addition of chunks of red pepper and spring onion for a bit of texture. And there’s copious use of big chunks of garlic and a hit from chilli which lets you know it’s there but doesn’t dominate. Across the table, there was a “sizzling” beef stirfry which, with the inclusion also of red peppers and spring onion, you might have thought was one of the Cantonese dishes but there’s lots of garlic in here and an assertive use of chilli, including slices of pickled green chilli, which made you think this had been tweaked for Hunanese tastes. It was delicious. We ate both dishes with nice fluffy rice. Service had been efficient and friendly (not always a given in Chinatown), Interesting to note that, along with chopsticks, we were given a fork and spoon. I know the latter are the usual utensils in Thailand but I understand the practice is now more widely adopted in East Asia. This is the first time I’ve seen it in a Chinese restaurant. We stuck to chopsticks.More
