Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The food was just ok, service is very slow and inattentive. So I’m surprised how popular this place is, it was fully booked in the beginning of the evening according what I overheard by host when he was turning down English speaking girl. Then French...couple came, he also said they are fully booked it somehow seated them. I don’t know because they speak in French or any other reason, just what I observed.More

We had dinner in Le Bistro Volney in August 2020. Among the many restaurants of the streets, le Bistro stands out with its short but refined menu. Fresh products, sourced locally, well cooked and presented, made for a great evening. Even though the menu is...short, it was still difficult to make a choice, a testimony of how good the options were. The owner is passionate about his products and wines, and was of great advice. Highly recommended.More

We were given a recommendation for Le Bistro Volney and the meal, service and hospitality was exceptional. We felt very relaxed and sorry we had not discovered this gem on previous trips to Brittany.

We arrived early and that was not a problem. A very nice dinner on a Sunday evening. we only fancied one dish from the menu, we are plain eaters and not keen on fishy dishes. The Pork loin was delicious with taglatteli. I would have...like proper veggies with it as we like our vegetables, on reflection I should have ordered a side salad. On the whole very nice ambience and friendly serving staff.More

At least for the clients! While many french restaranteurs are sitting home on Sunday glum about the economy, this hard working team is satisfying folks who still want a nice meal on their day off. While it is a paper place mat, paper napkin and...makeshift decorated kind of place, the cooking is first rate, a varied selection at fair value, and the wait staff hustles to keep a full house of customers meals on schedule. Frankly, the three course 32 Euro menu is a real bargain and tempts one to splurge a bit on their wide ranging wine list. If our foie gras, pintade and chocolate cake are representative, anything you order on the menu will be satisfying. We would be happy to return on another trip to Rennes. The 8 or 10 steps, without a railing, up to the main mezzanine dining area might be a challenge for some, although the wait staff zips up and down like a Stairmaster exercise.More

Finding a good restaurant that is open for dinner on a Sunday evening out of peak season is often hard in France. Finding this one was a stroke of luck as it is really good, with an interesting, beautifully prepared menu, careful attention to wines,...and friendly but efficient service. I've never been invited to taste my wine by the glass before confirming my choice. The bisto is small, so booking is advised but the online reservation system worked well. Some tables are on a mezzanine accessed by steepish stairs and space is a little tight, hence my 4* rating but I couldn't fault the food or service.More

The first night of our month-long trip to France and we had the most amazing dinner. Le Bistro Volney is a small, welcoming, two-story bistro in the old section of Rennes. The service was delightful and, OH, the food! You must try the smoked duck...appetizer -- a melange of distinct and harmonious flavors. And for dessert, the Valhrona Chocolate. Warm and gooey and oh so chocolatey! The Chef at Le Bistro Volney really knows what he is doing -- and how wonderful for us!More

Le Bistro Volney has a narrow front and is tucked in among numerous other restaurants. On the ground level, it has room for only about five modest looking tables (or 10 people) but about twice that is available up a few stairs behind the bar...counter. The illusion of a Bistro serving simple fare is shattered once the food appears. For appetizers, we had a wonderful, tender veal tatzikia (i.e., lightly grilled) and a tasty presentation of three islands of duck breast with chèvre and vegetables surrounding a vegetable compote mold. For main courses, we had a lovely pork roll with sauerkraut and whipped potatoes with chives and a magnificent seared lamb centers with polenta and vegetables. The affordable white wine (2016 Terres Falmet) suggested by the most helpful “bar tender” was a perfect match for our meal, which was finished with a decadent molten chocolate cake with raspberry sherbet. We would definitely go back here our next time in Rennes. Reservations are required, especially on Sundays when so many other restaurants are closed. Note: in Brittany, it seems to be the rule that there is only one sitting so the table is yours for the night.More

Was here in Sep. 2018 for a business dinner with a bunch of colleagues from all over the world. Very cozy place, very appealing food (both to eyes and mouth), with a nice touch that puts it one step ahead of the pack in downtown...Rennes. Limited selection of food (you can check the menu online on the restaurant's site), but that's actually a good sign in my opinion! Decent choice of wine, with adequate prices. Excellent service, very attentive and nice staff. Definitely a place to recommend!More

This restaurant popped up when i was searching for the best place to dine in Rennes. It was a warm summer Saturday evening and I was worried that the bistro will be fully booked. Fortunately, there was a spot for me right outside - on...a central street with all kinds of bars and restaurant, buzzing in the summer heat. The place is very authentic - the menu is written on a black board outside and the staff passionately explain all the items. Fresh and flavourful, the food was fantastic. I had a crispy duck with seasonal vegetables and the meat just melted in my mouth. Appreciated the wine suggestions by the lovely waitress who served the tables with ease and a smile! Definitely recommend!More

This is a small, cosy restaurant that surprised us in one of the warmest nights in Rennes. We were expecting some good food, possibly some good recommendations for wine pairings and a nice service and... We got all of this and much more! Of course,...we had to "tune in" with the style of the restaurant, which is not for those seeking some food to fill in their stomach and go away, but for those looking for an experience to remember for its quality and wishing - possibly - to celebrate a special occasion without having to look at their watch but rediscovering the pleasure of being with those you are sharing the table with. This means that, yes - waiting time might be long(ish) but the food that then is served is freshly prepared, full of aromas and taste (and don't believe the horror stories of two-and-half hour waits for a dessert... Just doesn't sound credible); yes - the menu is somewhat limited in choices (but we are however talking of five, or maybe six, options on the menu for the mains!), but there are suggestions of the day that add novelty to the stable base of offerings and tastes are accommodated in any case (and since everything we had was excellent, why looking for more?). So, be prepared and you will not be disappointed; go there expecting for something else, be surprised and try to understand the philosophy behind this small restaurant, and you will not be disappointed; go there and stick to your opinions, and be disappointed (but in this last case, maybe you just deserve it...).More

This restaurant is located in an historic building in a charming street in the old town. There are a few tables outside a couple on the ground floor and a few more upstairs. It is quite compact but full of character. It was easy to...book online and because of the size and popularity of the restaurant it is definitely wise to book. We both had a duck dish which was nothing short of excellent. It came with wild rice a delicious sauce and vegetables. It was the best meal that we had on our holiday in France. The service was very good by an energetic and enthusiastic young lady. Highly recommended.More
