Overseen by an extremely diligent and considerate manager and/or proprietor, Le Bon Bock is well worth a visit if you’re in the wider Montmartre area. The boîte-like scale of this restaurant, coupled with the otherworldly decor make for an ambience hard to replicate, and even...harder to beat. The driver of this inimitable ambience is easily the artwork in this restaurant, and at the risk of eliciting the ire of the chef and the kitchen, who incidentally deserve credit for a concise menu of simple hearty dishes well executed, the art on display is the star of the piece. Defying the hackneyed adage about restaurants and artworks on the wall, the paintings on display at Le Bon bock are arranged in a brilliantly insouciant manner, not to be tried at home. The variegation therein, juxtaposed with the less than minimalist presentation is an optical feast. Moreover, the fact that a large proportion of it seems site specifically painted lends to Le Bon Bock’s place as a portal into dining in Montmartre at a time predating even the Michelin guide. It’s worth pointing out that what makes this place a rarity is that all this seems to be achieved effortlessly, without pretension or pastiche. The intermittent silences interspersed in the otherwise excellently selected Bossa nova background music however, would be the only wrinkle in an otherwise faultless display, but this really cannot and should not detract from what was an excellent experience at a truly representative outpost of the city’s gastronomic and hospitality heritage.More
