This was my first visit and I really enjoyed the experience. The pub has a fascinating history which can be seen in the decor. It was very busy but we had excellent and friendly service. The beer was superb and I loved the flammkuchen! I will definitely visit again.

This is a great place for traditional German food and beer. It's wonderfully decorated with pictures of the Berlin's history and leading political figures covering the walls. It was crowded, but we found seats on a long wooden table and ordered beer. It arrived quickly and was good. The food is traditional German. I had the pork knuckle, slow roasted... More

We were spoilt for choice in this lovely area of Berlin, close to the river! This one caught our eye as there seemed to be a real buzz about the place. Visited in the evening for dinner and found the menu to be very good indeed. Food was fabulous and the service helpful and swift but unobtrusive! Prices are reasonable... More

Great bar, lovely beer served in 20cl glasses and keeps getting topped up. Didn't eat but the food looked good. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

Went on basis of other TripAdvisor reviews, when Christmas markets closed - highly recommended. Good food - huge portions (meatballs and pork knuckle), very reasonable prices and good beer. Friendly other customers too.

We were recommended this place by our taxi driver, it turned out to be a fantastic recommendation, we arrived very late in the evening, not expecting to be served, how wrong we were, a freshly cooked smoked pork chop, with potatoes and sauerkraut, all arrived piping hot and delicious, it was really good value too

This place is filled with history, but that wouldn't matter if the food was bad. But in fact it is very good and they serve Kolsch beer, which is something that most tourists never tasted. It is good to visit with friends for lunch or just to have some beers and ear some Flammkuchen - I strongly recommend it.

Whether indoors or out - out if at all possible, beside the river and overlooking Friedrichstrasse Station - this old restaurant deserves all the plaudits: fast service, if you make your wishes clearly known, outstanding German food (eg currywurst, sauerbraten recommended) and beer, and indoors wonderful historic newspapers and posters, outside river view.

Neighbourhood Profile
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
