Came early for breakfast at 08.30, 2 of us had a Xuixos filled with crema catalana, they were delicious, then we saw ppl eating the chickpeas even though it was so early, so we had a plate of them as well, and they were the best dish I had eaten in Barcelona! This is a great place, very busy but... More

This place has been here for 50 years and is one of the most famous places in the boqueria. Juanito the owner doesn't speak much English, but loves to pose for photos and is a real character. His nephew Jordi will take over the family business eventually. When you come into the boqueria, turn right and it's right at the... More

The atmosphere surrounding the bar is just incredible, situated in the middle of the market you are surrounded by people and market stalls. The food was very good, we had the king prawns and the baby squid which was perfect to put us on for a few hours. Service was very attentive and an overall very enjoyable experience.

This place is great! Fun place for a few small plates and a cold glass of beer. Always packed but seats open up with frequency. The famous Juan from the Rick Steves videos, great to see him. Such a friendly guy. Food was great with the highlights the chickpea dish and the braised oxtail. So delicious.

Go for an early lunch; wait until someone leaves if it's crowded; try everything you can eat. Chat with people both serving and around you. Fabulous!

The Mercat de la Boqueria at lunchtime can be overwhelming so it was nice to find this tapas spot near one of the entrances. They do wonderful things with beans and of course offer some of the classic seafood dishes of Barcelona. When we visited our server recommended the baby squid with beans in a black ink sauce. I tried... More

If you don't understand the title, it's OK. Just go there for breakfast, repeat the phrase, and prepare for delight. A xixu is a cream filled pastry with cinnamon and sugar... Light, flaky, and heavenly. Cafe con leche is simply coffee and milk, but not that gas station variety. Smooth, creamy, and perfect. Enjoy the sites and sounds while taking... More

Staying in El Raval

Neighbourhood Profile
El Raval
Once a downtrodden corner of downtown Barcelona, this gritty area has seen a cultural resurgence boasting an excellent nightlife and one of the most multi ethnic spots in the entire city. A sense of humble authenticity protrudes from the many independent record stores, second hand shops, and student bars that seem to light up the streets day and night. The rocking epicenter, the MACBA Plaça, is a modern day forum for bohemian youth, abuzz with the sights and sounds of late-night gatherings and talented skateboarders showing off their latest tricks.
