Excellent service, beautiful atmosphere. We had breakfast there every morning, the orange juice was delicious!

This place is a convenient tourist trap - the food does what it's supposed to do and satisfy your hunger. That's about it... Knowing this before hand, we still stopped in. The Cafe was downstairs from the Hostal we were staying at and we were starved...

Loved this beautiful cafe looking onto the plaza in front of the palace. There is a great menu, plenty of choice with tea in a pot and lovely coffee, delicious pastries, and eggs benedict if you really want it. My partner ordered a cracker with a Seville orange flavouring, thinking he was getting an orange tart so make sure you... More

We stopped by for a quick drink and a snack - our first encounter with one waiter was abrupt and rude, and we are very understanding people, so if he was rude to us it must have been so! We were told by waiter no 1 to wait outside till a table became free, even though there were tables vacant... More

I visited the Café de Oriente mid-afternoon on a warm Friday in April for a cold beer after a long walk around the city and visiting the palace & cathedral. The decor inside the café was excellent (they had some of the same Matthew Williamson wallpaper as me!) and it looked like a perfect place for a lunch / dinner,... More

An accessible cafe that is perfect for a quick refuel after visiting Prado or Retiro Park. The decor is pretty and the service brisk. Prices are reasonable too. I enjoyed the tea break.

I recently had the pleasure of dining solo at Cafe de Oriente on the Friday evening of Semana Santa. My experience with the staff was excellent. I opted for the Chef's menu which I had experienced in the past and was certainly not disappointed. I took my time enjoying the multiple courses which included both seafood and meat courses. My... Breathtaking view, love the atmosphere ❤️. Nice place to have some drinks however don't expect good or friendly service from waiters because you won't find it. If you are lucky you might get the main waiter or "Maitre" he seemed friendly. If you are expecting friendliness, I Don't recommend it. If you can ignore it and stay present to the... More

On a sunny day I love to eat lunch in the terrace of the Cafe de Oriente -and enjoy the view of the Royal Palace & its gardens. Their Croquetas Variadas are delicious as well as their Tortilla de Patatas "tapa" -and the Timbal de Vegetales a la Parrilla. Later I like to walk around the plaza behind the adyacent... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
