Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'd been going to Madrid and never realised this place was right under my nose. A beautiful old restaurant (since 1920) that's holding it's own against the invasion of gentrification or whatever you want to call it. Great staff, stellar dishes.

Very very good place for classic Spanish dishes. We had the gambas, fried lamb, and callos. Everything was perfect. We especially loved the callos which had melt-in-your-mouth meat. Servings were plentiful and price reasonable for what you get. Most of all, the service was excellent....The staff made us feel very welcome and comfortable. Highly recommended.More

My BFF has told me about Hylogui for over 15 years and I finally had the chance to Experience it for myself over the last two weeks. It is classic Spanish cuisine (croquetas, berenjenas, revueltos, esparragos blancos, sopa Castellana, etc perfectly cooked, with the ingredients...as the stars of the meal, not elaborate flavouring or sauces. As a vegetarian I have always found delicious options here. Not to be missed: revuelto with wild mushroom and young garlic, menestra de verduras, and the nata con nueces dessert is to die for!!! Ditto the chupitos (licor de hierbas or pacharan). The servers are personable, efficient and very friendly. Superb!More

My wife and I enjoyed a quiet, rainy march evening dinner at hylogui. Middle of the week and the area was extraordinarily quiet and we had the place to ourselves. This was 930 pm so it wasn't like we were tourist early and so we...were a bit concerned. No need. Our server was still in a great mood and treated us well. The food is not fancy but extremely tasty and well done. We both had the lower priced prix fix daily special ( as suggested by another reviewer ask for it it as it isn't on the menu they give you). I had lentil soup as my starter. Ham based broth, thick with potatoes. Could have stopped there but I got a nicely grilled swordfish steak seasoned with olive oil and garlic. Ice cream for dessert. My wife had cauliflower and a nicely cooked but over salted beef steak. Flan for dessert which she loves. Water and a carafe of (not my taste) red wine included for 19 euros each. Recommended and Would return.More

We often eat here when in Madrid and it's simply superb. From the waiters (very friendly and excellent service) to the amazing, authentic food (highly recommend the jamon iberico de bellota and veduras a la plancha to start), nothing can be faulted! The selection of...'chupitos' at the end were also a lovely touch - and of course, welcomed.More

I used to go there when I lived in Madrid back in the 80s. It was always a great value place specialising in standard Spanish fare - good quality food cooked simply and well. It is still around and has not been prettified into sterility...like so much of Madrid has. I asked if they did a menu del dia (rather naughtily they don't advertise this) and they said they did. They brought me a little plate of some rather excellent olives and little sardines, poured me a glass of red and left the bottle. They were happy to supply a large glass of tap water which is, by the way, excellent in Madrid. Given a choice of four or five options for each course, I opted for salmorejo - a cold tomato/garlic based soup thickened with breadcrumbs, real peasant food and quite winderful, refreshing and healthy tasting with tiny flakes of seasoned ham sprinkled on the top looing like rubies. Second course was "magro de cerdo con tomate", thick chunks of lean pork in a rich, perfectly reduced sauce that came garnished with hand-cut chips. I opted for a coffee instead of a pudding and the whole lot came to a straight €10. The friendly, efficient service deserves tipping well and this business deserves to survive...More

We have eaten at Hylogui for the last 30 years. It has been remodeled and seems a bit sterile, but the service and food are still top notch. It's well located between Puerta del Sol and the Castellana in Madrid. The food is classic Spanish...with good meat, great vegetables and a strong wine list. The eggplant (berenjena rebozada) is not to be missed. We enjoy returning to Hylogui year after year.More

We have been eating at Hylogi since our first trip to Madrid in 1997. We ate there on two separate occasions and then lost the address. On subsequent trips we ate at various other restaurants in Madrid and never found the same quality of food...and service that we experienced at Hylogi. In 2010, we found the address and returned. The restaurant had been remodeled in a bright modern decor. The food was as good or better than we remembered. The manager remembered us and went out of his way to provide an excellent dining experience. We have returned since and intend to make this our go to restaurant any time we return to Madrid. We find the food to be very authentic Madrid fare. Weekdays at lunch, the menu of the day is an excellent all inclusive value. We highly recommend it.More

We ate here at the recommendation of several of my husband's colleagues for whom this is their favorite restaurant in Madrid. I don't know that I would go that far, but for classic Castellano food, this is a great choice! The menu del dia (the...prix fixe meal) is a wonderful value at around 20€ a person ($28). For that you can get, for example: a large (very large!) dish of gazpacho or revuelto (a kind of scrambled egg with shrimp, asparagus and mushrooms), salad or smoked salmon, an entree of two huge pieces of grilled pork (which were to die for) with blue cheese, sole in a green sauce, grilled sepia, or pork brochette, and dessert or coffee. For dessert my son got the flan which was the size of an entire dessert plate. I ordered the cuajada (a kind of panna cotta with honey) which came in a soup bowl, and my husband got the cheese cake all of which were excellent. Oh and your glass of wine is also included in the price. Can't be beat!More
