Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Having spent a long morning wandering around the quite amazing 'sassi' (cave network) of Matera, I was determined not to get trapped in a tourist (and/or expensive) restaurant for a late lunch. On my walk back to Piazza Vittorio Veneto Noticed the Malatesta, and that...it was full of families having Sunday lunch. I joined them. The menu just shouted 'home cooking' I ordered stuffed mushrooms then sausages as a main course, not because I'm stingy, but because it was just what I fancied. Luckily I had worked up an appetite with my wanderings, because the ample plate of sausages also had a whacking great pork chop on top. 1/2 lire of red E3, Cake, then cafe and grappa and I came out with change from E20. Luckily the walf back to the hotel was relatively easy. A real find and shows that these places really do exist in southern ItalyMore

Delicious and not touristic at all. Try the bread salat. The owner even translated the only italian menu for us.

Fantastic service with friendly welcoming staff. Local dishes and beautifully presented. Informal. You can bring your dog so kids are also probably welcome. Good vegetarian choices, too. I recommend the goats cheese with truffle.

This place is fantastic, the food, the service, the philosophy behind the restaurant, water is always free and they serve mostly 0-km food. The vegetarian options are just fantastic. Highly recommended.

I’m very glad that this restaurant is in Matera! They serve traditional local dishes with decent prices. The outside table was nice and fun. I had cialledda that was Matera version of bread salad. It was ok. Then I had orecchiette pasta with greens. It...was very good as the pasta was perfectly cooked to al dente and the greens was flavorful. I would go back when I get a chance to visit Matera again!!More

Osteria Malatesta is a friendly and authentic restaurant in the heart of Sassi in Matera. People are super friendly and will share the typical Italian approach. The food is amazing: it is just like going to eat to your Italian grandmother! It is the typical...local food with no much fusion but excellent! The wine is at the center of this experience, donmt miss it. And if you are lucky you will also enjoy live music! Trust me, you will not regret it!More

We were staying nearby and selected this restaurant for our evening meal. We only eat small meals, and we both selected the Egg plant Parmagiana. It had been prepared only a few minutes earlier and wad delivered to our table within minutes of ordering. The...staff were very good, they spoke better English than we spoke Italian!! Accompanied by some local wine, our meal was delicious. The ambience or atmosphere of this restaurant was very warm and friendly, and obviously a lot of locals eat there regularly. It was a good choice for a tasty meal. Highly recommendedMore

We came upon this restaurant just wandering around the backstreets of Matera and were enticed in by the friendly atmosphere and local menu. The service was very friendly and the menu had lots of local specialities. The food is simple, well cooked and very tasty....Even the bread served, while we waited for our starters, was particularly good. Prices are very reasonable and we were glad that we found this little treasure.More

I was been in this place with one of my friends for a dinner. The food is traditional, the price is reasonable. The "pasta" is very tasty. We will come back here.

We had lunch with a group we were traveling with. Everything was delicious. We had many appetizers, red wine, pasta and chocolate cake for dessert. Service was efficient and portions were ample. This is definitely worth a stop.

Enjoyed lunch at Osteria Malatesta on a Saturday in Matera. Their menu is complete with several very typical dishes from the region. Although the service was a little slow, even perhaps for southern standards, our pasta was absolutely delicious - made with very fresh ingredients...and bursting with color and flavor - and the house wine was great, served in a typical wine jug. I would definitely recommend this casual place for a lunch with friends or family.More
