We discovered Il Tulipano Nero on our honeymoon six years ago and were excited to return to the place that had the best gluten free pizza and tiramisu I had found anywhere. Unfortunately, although the food IS still good, the standards seem to have slipped somewhat. We ate here on our first night in Rome. I ordered the Buffala gluten... More

Food was decent and we had a nice table outside but certain things we asked for were not bought, but added to the bill anyway. When we questioned this, the manager / head waiter (not sure who he was) tried to tell us we had received the items in question. Took aaaaages to bring change and when we left he... More

Tulipano was our first meal in Rome. They had good pizza and decent service. It was a good first meal and they seemed to have lots of options.

I went to eat here and had read that it was good so we thought we would give it a try. On top of it , it was next to one of the best ice cream shops so thought why not. We went and were so disappointed. Definitely this is a terrible tourist restaurant. The waiters were kind and helpful... More

The best restaurant in Rome-Trastevere! The dishes are plentiful and the kindness, courtesy and kindness abound. reasonable prices, almost cheap for the area. traditional roman cuisine, we found ourselves in front of a plate of carbonara of the most exquisite, followed by succulent escalopes with lemon. The owners are always smiling, helpful and make people happier just to look at... More

Very pleasant experience, food was average and service also average! The outdoor seating with Italians and visiting Americans was very pleasant...seemed connected to "real Italians" (many of whom were watching an outdoor movie less than 1 block away) was a highlight, but the food an service were average.

Nice atmosphere. Food was OK. Wait staff very confused constantly going in circles. One creepy waiter had cigarette hanging from mouth WHILE WORKING! Was having argument with someone in back of house loudly in dining room. Asked for bill after a wait. Our waiter avoided this like plague. Bill was not correct. Had additions. Took forever to arrive. When I... More

The reviews for this restaurant seem to be fairly evenly divided between excellent and terrible. I can only give praise. All items on the menu were available with a "gluten free" option, albeit a few euros more expensive. The pizza was excellent and with a thin crispy base and full of flavour, the cost being 9euros as opposed 8euros for... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
