I've been very lucky to be working on a project in Bologna that has allowed me to return to this beautiful city 18 times in three years, fabulous restaurants everywhere but it is with greatest pleasure that I try to revisit Flavio and Tommaso in...this, my favourite, Trattoria de via Sierra.. Try? because it is very popular and booking is essential, over Easter evenings were all booked so I managed to visit for lunch with an international group of colleagues who are all keen to revisit whenever they return to Bologna. Short but excellent menu which evolves through the seasons, everything is first class; starters were excellent, Tosone and Cardoncelli we sampled. Home made fresh pasta; my Italian colleague headed straight for the Tortelloni; his favourite, "the best", as good as his grandmother's! French colleagues had Tagliatelle with Ragu...fantastic. Pay attention to the specials of the day. I had Tagliatelle with wild mushrooms; fresh morels!! delightful. Main; again everything is good, you have to return to try what you didn't have this time as everyone is so enthusiastic about what they are having. Never had a bad experience here. Lunch is relaxed, atmosphere is simple and laid back, service is excellent.....booking avoids disappointment at the door! Flavio, describes the menu in English with a skill that leaves your taste buds tingling with anticipation. Tommaso follows through from the kitchen with dishes that delight and the service all round is friendly, efficient and relaxed. Gives you an appreciation of the wonders of great "slow food" that Italy has to offer. Love it....Bologna has much to offer, Trattoria di Via Serra is at the pinnacle as far as I am concerned. Thank you!More

Once again....Would wish to have the whole menu. Everything is good, never had a bad experience here. Lunch is relaxed, atmosphere is simple and laid back, service is excellent.....booking avoids disappointment at the door! Even if you have visited often....there is a plat du jour...which is bound to please...I have to learn Italian...Trattoria di Via Serra is an incentive to do so....not because your host; Flavio, does not speak English, au contraire he is fluent..but because you want to get a deeper appreciation of the wonders of good slow food that Italy has to offer and which Tomasso's kitchen epitomises! Love it....Bologna has much to offer, Trattoria di Via Serra is at the pinnacle as far as I am concerned. Thank you!More

I had been slightly disappointed with the food in Bologna - until we went here! Fresh flavors combined in creative methods. Everything we tried was outstanding. I'm not sure how anyone makes a reservation here, but if you can, it's worth it. Maybe the best...time to call is the afternoon when the restaurant is closed? The phone rang all through dinner and they never answered it. (wish they would just turn it off)More

Fabulous freshly prepared local food. The homemade gnocchi melted in the mouth, the rabbit was sublime, and the chocolate cake was gorgeous. The owner and staff are so friendly, and clearly love what they do, which added to the experience. I was lucky to get...a table - booking in advance is essential.More

This was not my first visit to Trattoria di Via Serra, but it was the first for my 5 other guests. Booking is essential and we arrived early to an empty room, were greeted and seated by the delightful Flavio, who then described the menu...to my guests. I cannot say we tried everything, but all sounded mouth wateringly excellent. Each dish we did try was done to perfection. The room had quickly filled while we started with our Antipasti...all terrific, special mention to the Tosone di Bianca. Primi Piatti was widely sampled and again all perfetto. The tortellini in brodo di cappone was as good as that made by the mother of an Italian colleague who I know had spent all day in the kitchen and is famous for her brodo! Secondi piatti; we tried nearly everything, all great, I enjoyed the ox cheek, slowly braised for about 6 hours. Unctuous layers of soft, tender meat that melt in the mouth, everyone else savoured similar delights, no one disappointed at all. The talk over desert was of how excellent the meal had been with my guests then sampling the delightful Nocino and coffees. "I wonder if we could book our Christmas meal here?" Flavio and his staff were attentive throughout, despite being filled to capacity. Tommaso visited us briefly from the kitchen near the end of our evening and checked that all had indeed been to our enjoyment! Tremendous evening, first in, last out, best in Bologna. Thank you for a wonderful experience for my guests. I'll be back with as many special friends as I can encourage to visit the wonderful city of Bologna.More

A piece of advice, when Bologna is crowded, don’t just try to find a restaurant for dinner – make a reservation. We ended up at Soverini, and though there was nothing wrong, there was not much charm and food was good – but nothing more.

Do NOT try to go to this place they HATE tourists. We tried to make a reservation online and via phone. Then we tried to show up and they had 1 table filled and everything else was empty and they refused to seat us. NOT...WORTH THE TIME TO TRY AND GET IN because they only want locals. Left a really bad impression of Bologna.More

I feel odd writing a review about a restaurant I have not eaten at but here goes. I read many fabulous reviews about Trattoria di Via Serra and a few weeks before our trip to Bologna I e mailed to the address on the website....I got a simple reply, no reservations by e mail. So I called twice and got a recorded message in Italian. I then e mailed the hotel we were staying at and they responded saying you have to queue up on the day. We walked 30 minutes to a not so nice area of the city to an unwelcoming entrance of the restaurant only to be told it was full, and there is no ability to wait in line and full the next day too. The man explained politely they don't take reservations (but clearly had a book with a long list of reservations) and people behind us were seated immediately. My understanding is if you are local you are ok but if you are a tourist or visitor don't bother. fair enough he did us a favour. Our second choice place to eat squeezed us in (despite telling su they were full) and we returned twice during our stay....positive review completed. Please do not waste your time with this place, there are some wonderful places to eat in Bologna, without the hassle and inconvenience of Trattoria di Via Serra.More

This is a tough reservation! We were lucky enough to get one on a Tuesday night. Everything well done from the service to the food. The 12 Euro liter of house wine was a great value. My husband and I each had a pasta and...shared the meatballs with porcini mushrooms. Delicious!More

As I could see from other reviews I am one of those that did not succeed to reserve a table at this restaurant. Even though I tried many times on all the available channels (phone, email, fb) to find out how I can book a...table I received no answer from them, not even an automatic one as they claim to send. Anyhow, what astonished me was the very offending way the owner had answered some of the not so good google reviews from customers and potential customers. I have never seen such disrespectful answers from a restaurant, especially from a Michelin rated one. Indeed, this one has only the Bib Gourmand award and not a real Michelin star… but still, respect should, be there no matter the awards, stars and ratings… In the end feedback is a gift, no matter if it is a good or a bad one. p.s. I write reviews only for places for which my personal experience there was opposite to their rating. Of course, when I try to spot a place by reading the reviews, I look for the highly rated ones. It is the reason why you may notice that my bad reviews are for places with good and very good ratings and with which I had a bad experience. At least I hope I can help other potential customers not to be disappointed and the rated place to improve their service and/or products.More

So this particular Trattoria came recommended from a food blogger that I followed. It was pure luck that the hotel with which we were staying was only a nine minute walk from this place. I’m so glad it was. We went for lunch and had...the recommendations that the blogger recommended and they did not disappoint. This is probably the best food I’ve ever had in my entire life. I hate to use extreme words like that but for me it was the simplicity of the fresh ingredients and the few number of ingredients used that made the dish excelMore

We were picking a Cruise up in Ravenna and had a night in Bologna. The stars must have been looking down on us because we found a very nice hotel, next door to a great wine bar and a fantastic restaurant, all in Via Luigi...Serra, and 5 minutes from the Mono Rail to the Airport. We made some internet enquiries and discovered that Trattoria di Via Serra came out very well, but having read the reviews felt that I would not get booked. I went to the restaurant but it was closed, however the wine bar said it opened at 7pm and I might be lucky if I got there early. We got there for 7 and rang the bell and waited. We were shown in and spoke to the owner who was charming who gave us a table until 8.30pm. We were shown to our table and the female server spent time with us translating the menu. We had the house wine which was excellent. The food was so different from most menus and was fantastic ,it was like eating in some ones home. The bill was also reasonable , the staff and owner were charming and the food fantastic. I look forward to returning some day.More

I didn't see any so I am unsure. I don't recall seeing any posted signage saying yeah or nea. As there is no outside seating I would imagine not.
