Visited this place last night as it was a nice stroll from our hotel and we wanted to try Italian Tappas. We were squeezed in a d then left for ages before a staffer reluctantly took our order, he was surly and disinterested in any recommendations. Wine was great a Orvetto Sergio Mottura and that was the highlight of the... More

Very rude staff, never been so badly served (almost as if they didn't want us there)! We took the wrong entrance (hard to see!) to begin with and staff looked at us as if we were totally crazy to come in this side. Very expensive while not very good. Food came very quickly but you could taste that this was... More

We came for a light dinner on the recommendation of a Venetian friend. I had no idea the trip advisor reviews were so bad and I was shocked to find out! Both pasta dishes we ordered (pumpkin ravioli and crab gnocchi) were delicious. The wine was good and the service was fine and the ambiance was pleasant. And though there... More

Visited Aciugheta after a recommendation form our hotel so were disappointed to find that it lives up to its reputation at the bottom end of the Tripadvisor rankings. Started with a drink in the bar area which was very pleasant - would recommend this but that's where it stops. When we asked for a table we were shown to a... More

Looks good from the outside but not great food. We ate in a few restaurants in Venice and ranked them as we went. Unfortunately we thought this was the worst. Staff were inattentive and the food was disappointing. The pizza was bland and the dough was soggy. The cheeseboard was not tasty.

In my opinion, San Marco is the sestiere where one is most likely to find overpriced and poor quality food. Frozen lasagne and rubbishy pizzas are plentiful and tourist menus capitalise on the hungry and exhausted visitors who have done insufficient research! Thus, it was a joy to stumble upon Aciugheta which is both near to the Piazza and a... More

The Concierge at the Hilton recommended Aciugheta and we ate here twice. It is located on San Marco island but away from most of the crowds. Service a bit slow by US standards but we were very comfortable.

Hotel recommendation for dinner was a success. Good variety of mid range entrees with nice starters. Helpful and friendly staff that helped navigate the menu and drink options. Before 6 pm primarily a bar with light meals. Close to San Marco.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
