This is one of the places I was really looking forward to visit. Before our trip to Venice, I checked several sources of inspiration for good restaurants in Italy. One name was in all of them – the Vedova. We liked the place from the moment we stepped in: cozy atmosphere, nothing fancy, but with a warm feeling and very... More

We ended up here as in January most of our favourite haunts were closed. This ended up with our best meal of the holiday. The place is cosy and welcoming. We ordered the meatballs to start...as good as the claims! Fried but still light and tasty. Then I had the lasagne and my boyfriend the amtriciana, both were so delicious... More

Having read about it's great 'cichetti' we put this on our itinerary. We got thoroughly scolded for taking a table to order our food, not understanding we had to stand at the non existent bar. Too many other good establishments with welcoming hosts to bother with this one.

You have to go to this restaurant to try the best vegetarian lasagna and tasty meatballs. It was extremely delicious!

Or both, really, for one can ask for the cicchetti bites to be served at the table. We really enjoy the fried meatballs (sometimes they put a bit too much filler and meatballs taste more like falafel balls, but still very tasty), white bean salad with onions, parsley and olive oil, octopus salad with potato, and pasta dishes. House wine... More

After reading all the reviews my wife and I decided to try the meatballs. We arrived and there was a small crowd at the bar. All the tables were empty. We asked and were told the meatballs were 1.5 Euros at the bar and 2 at the table. We stayed at the bar and each had a meatball and a... More

We had polpetta, squid ink and calamari pasta, pasta with bacon, octopus and polenta, and fried shrimp and calamari with a polenta cake (all along with demi-litres of white and red house wine), and biscotti and sweet wine to finish. All of the food was consistently excellent start to finish. The squid pasta, fritto, and octopus were standouts. The only... More

This charming little place tucked away in a small corner a few minutes walk from the train station was a great find. I walked in to find a narrow wooden bar where a few locals were sipping glasses of red wine and snacking. Further in were some tables where people seemed to be enjoying lunch. I decided to stand at... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
