My first meal in Venice and for my birthday dinner was at Antiche Carampane. We found it quite easily, even though it is delightfully off the beaten track, and were warmly welcomed by the staff as we entered and guided into the cosy, convivial dining room. The seafood is plentiful and varied and it'd be criminal not to explore the... More

I have been to Venice twice, my parents 4 times, and my grandfather 30 times :) ! We all agree that this is the best restaurant in Venice. First of all, it's not in a touristy neighborhood and there are a lot of locals & Italians eating here, which is always a good sign. Second of all, the food is... More

This was reserved for our final night in Venice and we expected it to be on a par with a fantastic restaurant we had found earlier in the week. Antiche Carampane was absolutely perfect and exceeded our already very high expectations! We were given fried squid in a cone as an aperitif- gorgeous. We shared the anti pasti mixed fish... More

This is a very friendly local restaurant, serving typical Italian seafood. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the whole restaurant had a great atmosphere. To start with we were given little cones of tiny fried fish. We then shared a plate of fried fish as a starter and for mains the monkfish and soft shell crab's were both excellent.... More

Unbelievably hard to find, which makes it all the more charming and exciting. Inventive food, family atmosphere. Delicious. A definite find for those who want to go somewhere special. Totally off the beaten path and not touristy.

We had a light lunch and I'd rate it as good, but not exceptional. It was comfortable, the service was OK and the prices, while high, were not exorbitant.

Looking back on our week in Venice, this was our best dinner. We shared an antipasti of shrimp on chicory, then soft shell crab and mixed fried local seafood with a homemade potato chips plus a nice Malavasia. Simple but really good.

Off the beaten track in Venice, this small restaurant takes pride in not offering tourist fare (see Rick Stein's "Venice to Istanbul" TV programme). It only has 10-12 tables so reservations are essential and allow an extra 10 mins or so to your journey time to find it but trust me - it is worth it. My Wife had beef... More

Had a superb experience here on my 60th birthday ten years ago, and had hoped for the same for my 70th. We were to be disappointed The food is still excellent, but has the restaurant changed hands? The service was rather abrupt and confused - too many on the floor. The family atmosphere from 10 years ago was gone. We... More

Staying in San Polo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
