Stopped here on a whim for lunch but was almost put off by the negative reviews. Glad I came in! The staff were friendly and efficient, the wine by the glass tasty (Pinot Grigio) and the food was awesome! I had the grilled scallops to start and used the ample yummy bread to mop up the lovely juices. I then... More

This place was recommended to us by our host and we actually came back on two subsequent evenings...it was that good! We had a wonderful seafood pasta and ate as much as possible. A lot of food but so well presented. And the ambiance was wonderful. We sat outside on a beautiful evening.

Recommended by our boat guide we had dinner here on a very rainy night, no reservation. The place was busy, seating was close but not intrusive, and the atmosphere was delightfully busy and upbeat. We had a Caprese salad and a spaghetti dish that was delicious. The food is simple, portions just the right size and perfectly seasoned. A very... More

My wife and I stayed in Venice for a couple of days before a cruise, and we had dinner at Osteria ae Cravate our first night there (a Thursday). Our lunch earlier that day wasn’t that good, so for dinner we used TripAdvisor to find a good restaurant that wasn’t too far from our hotel near Piazzale Roma. We had... More

Another recommendation from our hotel. Recieved a peach bellini welcome drink on arrival which was a lovely touch. Menu seemed too large given the size of the premises, but i cant deny the pasta was good! Only criticism is that our bill was bought over despite not asking for it, signalling that we had out stayed our welcome. Perhaps the... More

Wife had mozzarella starter and it was simply a work of art. Main course was equally good; in such a busy restaurant this seemed effortless. Really cosy lovely place to eat, but get there early as it's only got around 12 tables.

We hadn't booked but a table was found for us - others who had not booked but arrived a little later were unlucky because the place was full. Good extensive menu, not as cheap as some neighbouring establishments, but worth the extra. Quick and attentive service; the only negative is possibly the lack of space, as they manage to fit... A smallish restaurant across the Grand Canal from the main tourist haunts of Venice. Relatively uncomplicated, home-cooked style of cuisine, but tasty nonetheless. The set menu, which includes the house wine, dessert and coffee, is excellent value as long as it is to your taste. Very friendly welcome and service

Osteria ae Cravate, had our table ready and presented us with a delicious peach-sparkling wine drink. With an excellent Pinot Grigio, we had local cheese and for our mains, Anne had Spaghetti Bolognese, and Tom had grilled scampi. The scampi had claws and must have been local - never saw such crustaceans before. Both meals were excellent and so filing... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
