This restaurant was very close to where we were staying, which is how we found it. For most though, you would probably have to go searching for it. We had a pasta each; one with clams, the other in a tuna, olive & capers tomato based sauce. Both were delicious. I also had a couple of spritzers which were very... More

Our first evening meal in Venice and we were delighted. We weren't too hungry and what the resturant recommended to us was perfect (a risotto followed by a fish dish, each for 2 people). I couldn't help but order a tiramisu to end off the meal!

Ae Sonte was located just around the corner from our hotel in Venice. We ate dinner and were recommended the special of the day: crab and lobster linguine. Although a little pricier that the meals we had been eating on our trip, this was without doubt one of the best meals we ate in the three and a half weeks... More

Found this by pure chance and a couple just leaving told us we wouldn't regret going in, despite there being only one other table occupied (it was in between lunch and dinner service). They were right - the food was great and he head waiter friendly and polite. This was the most we spent on food in Venice and it... More

Just off street, this calm restaurant was recommended by our nearby hotel's concierge. Our first dinner in Venice and a little nervous, we were welcomed by the friendly 'no-hassle' head waiter who advised us on sharing dishes- seafood risotta, followed by a delicous sea bream. Good atmosphere, friendly prompt service. House wine very drinkable.

We stopped by here as part of our European Tour, This place is situated well off the beaten path in a back walkway. Service is good, our waiter spoke good English making ordering a little easier. I had a bowl of vegetable soup that seem to lack the pizzazz. along with a chicken entree that seem a little on the... More

Had a great meal here; it's casual and hidden, fresh seafood grilled; nice wine, and appears to appeal to locals, and I guess tourist like ourselves. We each had a glass of wine, spaghetti with lobster out of the shell in a red sauce that was spicy. Would definitely eat here again. It's not fancy, but doesn't need to be.

Three of us chanced upon this delightful restaurant in a quiet little square while wandering through Venice with no particular destination in mind. We decided to sit in the quaint piazza and have an aperitif and lunch. We ordered a mixed salad and mixed grilled vegetables to share. I had the sea bass, my granddaughter had salmon and our friend... More

This place struck us as very overrated. It's a bit formal and unfun inside, also under-heated, and the waiter did urge us to take the most expensive seafood grill for two even though that seemed like a lot of money and food for lunch time. Our kids had pizza and it was mediocre, as was my vongole. My husband had... More

We booked this place before we arrived in Venice for our first meal. The door was open (as it tends to be in a lot of places here) which made it quite chilli inside, people were sat eating in coats. The waiter will try to up-sell on everything, so be careful. The food was ok, a little overpriced and the... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
