We had the most delicious and special experience here on Valentines evening. Each dish was superb and the service was excellent with a real passion for food that is not stuffy in any way. We had three courses each and a bottle of moscato giallo, recommended to us by the waiter and definitely the very best wine of our trip.... More

I know that this seems to go "against the grain" with other reviews on this site but we had a meal here that was average at best. The staff were great, We arrived without a reservation on a Saturday night at 7.15 and were told by a very friendly staff member that we could have a table as long as... More

We had a fantastic dinner here. It's amazing to find such a restaurant in this very touristy area where all sorts of culinary horrors proliferate. This restaurant is an absolute gem. Food with a real passion. We discovered it thanks to the Telegraph Venice Guide app which, so far, has been 100% reliable. The food is really innovative without being... More

We found this superb restaurant on our last visit to Venice and a return visit was a must during our 2 night stay in the city. The food is inventive and delicious - there will be a relatively limited menu of the chef's current creations, but there have always been more choices that we would have liked to try! The... More

Ai Mercanti was both our favorite and the best value we had while in Venice. Fish is the specialty. Nice modest portion sizes. Dinner for five with wine was about 300 euros. Nice ambiance and confident mature waiting staff.

Outstanding quality, not only in comparison to most of the restaurants in Old Venice. Ai Mercanti is a beautifully set venue, with very appealing ambiance. The food is simply excellent. Our first plates - Ravioli filled with pulled Cod (fantastic) and a very good onion soup were nice starters indeed. The second - Local Mullet with Chickpea mousse and Cod... More

On a Saturday night the restaurant only had a booking available (prebooked) at 9.30pm. However on the night we walked in at 7.15pm just to see if they could take us and they managed to accommodate us. The room is tasteful and tables spread out nicely. Good wine options and all very good value. We tried two sparkling wines, some... More

My wife and I were given directions to Calle Dei fuseri, but the restaurant is actually on an "alley" off the Calle. Regardless, after arriving late, the staff was most welcoming and very fluent in English. The food was well prepared, but the menu items were unusual combinations. Price and wine selections were very good.

Ristorante Ai Mercanti in the heart of Venice between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco is an upmarket, romantic restaurant in very cool style that enjoys a high-flying gastronomic reputation. The vaulted dining room is decorated in sophisticated terracotta and black with impressive shining globe lighting. The bar is wittily decorated with dressmakers’ forms and sexy corsets – great conversation starters. The menu is classically-inspired Venetian of a high order, focusing on things from the sea and changing every two months to take advantage of the and array of the freshest ingredients in true Italian style and pastas and desserts are all made in-house. In warm weather the dining room sprawls out onto the adjoining campiello for the loveliest al fresco dining anywhere – the Venetians who crowd Ai Mercanti certainly think so.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
