We came back from a trip to Murano and were looking for a nice place to eat lunch. It was close to Ca' D'Oro, the small place with a short menu. It turned out to be crucial as this osteria is simply excellent in what they do and nothing else is needed. We had a selection of starters (later I... More

Nice wine bar, we had quick lunch there: excellent pasta and very good red house-wine. Nice, easy place to grab a bite and have a glass of wine. Enjoyed it.

We had lunch here twice (we came back as it was so good). Atmosphere, service and food was fantastic. And all excellent value for money. We wanted to go back a third time but unfortunately it was closed on Sunday ! If you are in the area make a point of going. You won't regret it.

A great little bar with some brilliant light bites on offer. On the main drag between the station and Rialto, but one of the few mainly populated by locals, not tourists - always a good sign. Shrimp cicchetti was exceptional. Exceptionally good value. Service was great - very friendly and welcoming. When we settled up before leaving, the bar staff... More

Be careful not to over order.Went at lunch, full of locals-not open for dinner. At 18euros for 2 people the Chiccetti must be the best value in the city.Tasty octopus, shrimps, clams, different sorts of rissoles, small fish, baccalau etc and crusty bread. The house white,Pinot Grigio was cheap, cold and excellent. Then had a plate of mixed grilled fish-all good.Definitely going again for that 'appetiser'!

We love these little wine bars with bar snacks. It's very local with many Italians popping in to neck a glass of wine before moving on to the next bar!

This is one of Cannaregio's (the district) Gems, a modestly sized place with a couple of tables outside. Venice is not a cheap place and this Osteria has helpful, friendly staff and a very simple but tasty menu. Essentially it's a pasta/seafood place and we had a plate of mixed seafood to share (for 2) and some Frutti di Mare... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
