Hidden along a side street, we came upon this small eatery where the waitress was eexcellent. We ordered Bellini drinks (again) and she explained in her best English how they were not bottled but made at the small counter by herself ! Tasty.. The tapas was explained at the counter and we chose a selection of sardines in onion on... More

Situated in a quiet area of Venice. Friendly and accommodating. No menu required here, just browse all that is on offer. Great tapas of fish and meat dishes.

Excellent music on Sat. Great food, try Calamari. Place is very small and brightly lit but very much worth trying out

This small venetian bar-restaurant offers "cicchettria" type of food (like italian tapas). Very good food in a typical restaurant frequented by locals. Prices are low and service is good. It might be hard to find because it is not on the main tourists areas.

I happened on this little tapas/wine bar after a long day of sight -seeing. On a Sunday evening, I enjoyed a selection of fish Cicchetti with a glass of wine. Service was warm and attentive.

Late in the afternoon we travelled across to the Castello district and got lost. I was also dying to take a pee, which is how we discovered La Bar Scuela Osteria, on the Salizada De Le Gate, 3183/A, Castello. Here we paid €5 for a couple of glasses of red wine, and got directions thrown into the bargain. If you're... More

We stopped off here after roaming the area looking for the place where they film the Donna Leon novels (next to San Francesco della Vigna) and were tired and thirsty. We ordered a spritz of course and a taster plate of fish nibbles (ciccheti) which we enjoyed very much. It was fresh and carefully presented, service was friendly, we were... More

Can't raye this one high enough. Consistently great food- some of the best local cicchetti to be found. Friendly staff just adds to the experience.

This little cafe in Venice is ideal for hanging with the locals. The food is primarily bar food, but very well prepared and presented, and in generous servings. The staff is extremely friendly and pay attention to the service. They often have free live music from local artists. Drinks and food are very affordably priced to hang out until closing... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
