If you are in the tourist area (even if it isn't in the heart of it) it can be difficult to find a place for lunch that isn't a complete rip off. Al Mascaron was a little more expensive then it should be but the quality is reasonable and the staff (owners?) were very friendly. The spaghetti bolognese doesn't look... More

We wanted to eat at a restaurant that was more local and less touristy - and this restaurant fit the bill. The food was very good - pasta and seafood. Our waiter was wonderful - friendly, appropriately attentive, and quite funny. This was a bit of a walk from our hotel near St. Mark's, but was well worth it. We... More

This was a nice little spot, but I can understand it would be a bit hit and miss- fortunately for me it was a hit. I can see that some people might interpret the service as gruff and I imagine if you don't order seafood, you'll probably get a lesser meal; this is the sort of place that has options... More

The bread was so stale as to be inedible. Very limited menu. Spaghetti bolognaise was (compulsory to share) lumpy, dry and served lukewarm. My complaint was ignored. DONT GO THERE.

Sat outside and enjoyed a few of the house wines white and red. Was very good. Had a 4 course meal for $30. Overall yummy with nice atmosphere.

Another great meal in this little restaurant. Simple, overflowing and tasty sharing plates of prosciutto and cheese, lightly heated vegetables and eggs with asparagus. Topped off with lovely crisp prosecco. The owner even rounded down our bill at the table with us! Hidden gem. Medium priced. Well worth a visit.

It did come with grits which was odd, but the fish was excellent. The service was good but the check took a while to get.

My husband and I had dinner at Osteria al Mascaron the first night we spent in Venezia. It is a very low key, authentic place. I wanted to try this place after reading the reviews in various websites. Glad we went! Our waiter recommended the house wine and antipasto. We also ordered the lobster pasta. Everything was delicious! We finished... More

We arrived around dusk in Venice and very hungry. It was the first weekend of Carnival and the hotel said their go-to recommendations were booked! We just started to wander away from the main crowd and stumbled on Mascaron. We are so happy we did. Great neighborhood spot. We didn't have a reservation but they still gave us a great... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
