Great atmosphere with really lovely and friendly guys behind the counter - food was really good and full of flavour despite looking underwhelming. Wine was fantastically cheap too! Brilliant first meal in Florence!

I'm born in Florence but I want to write this review in English, in order to advice travelers NOT searching for touristic, expensive, fake-Tuscany places. THIS is real Florence. The autentic, traditional, yummy meal and the old-style atmosphere of this little place will make you feel like you're eating in a 1950's Tuscan "osteria"!

This is a small restaurant--maybe 5 or 6 tables for eating--first off, i love any place like this. you can see what they have on the menu for the day in a glass case and the food comes out fast. meals are affordable, and the wine is 1.50 per glass. you can't go wrong here--we ate a delicious meal for... This is real, authentic Florentine food at its best. Alessio crafts his menu based on the best ingredients he finds fresh every morning. As it is only open for the lunch (pranzo) meal, make sure you don't "save it" for dinner and miss out! His pepposo (it is like a beef stew meat with its major spice being pepper -... More

Walked by this place so many times and the finally decided to try it today for lunch. So good. It is a very small, very local family type place with a limited menu based on what they have made for the day. It is great food at a great price. Do yourself a favor and get the red table wine.... More

We were in Florence on November 28th. After completing our visit to the Academia we had a few hours before our next appointment. My husband found this restaurant recommended in the Rick Steve's travel guide. We did find that street numbers are confusing in Florence; however, someone was kind enough to point us in the right direction. As we come... More

A fantastic little diner around the corner from the Accademia Gallery. Bravi Alessio kindly explained the menu options on display. The boar pasta was excellent, accompanied with a nice glass of local red. Simple, delicious and excellent value.

Have spent the last week traveling through Italy and have not found a better place than La Mescita. This is the experience I was hoping for when coming to Italy. This quaint restaurant near Piazza del Duomo is a great escape from the more tourist driven shops located in the nearby square. The owner speaks very good English and gave... More

We went due to the recommendation of Rick Steve's. Just what we were looking for. It is a small eatery with ham hocks hanging from the ceiling, which only add to the charm of its owner, Alessio. He couldn't do enough for us, and was very proud of his delicious roast beef slices. Fabulous! This is a nice stop to... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The pleasant atmosphere of this residential area, a stone’s throw away from the Duomo of Florence, surprises everyone. A continuous flow of backpacking students provides the tranquil surroundings for the elderly residents who sit in Piazza San Marco to read the daily newspaper. Home to several universities, including the Academy of Fine Arts, San Marco is one of the most vibrant cultural centers in the city. A bridge connecting the modern cultural activity of Florence to its classic art, represented by the everlasting magnificence of the original David, resonates as a symbol of Florence and of Italy as a whole. Get lost in a Neoclassic world, a journey back in time through historic buildings like Spedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents), San Marco church, Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, and natural jewels like the Botanical Gardens.
