Possibly the best gelateria in town (believe me, have tried a few) - excellent variety of flavours, including several sorbets. Reasonably priced (unlike some places nearer the town centre), huge portions and truly friendly and welcoming staff who`d give you a taster of any flavour you might be interested in before you decide. Have walked across town twice on a... More

Il Gelato di Filo was recommended by one of our tour guides as one of the best in Florence. We stopped in for a lemon gelato and also tried the watermelon which was unique and so delicious. Then we headed up the hill to the Piazza Michelangelo. It was so good we had another after coming back down the hill!

This is a simple ice-cream store but the quality and variety of the different flavours is gerat. The store is at the bottom on the "Piazzale Michelangelo". Treat yourself to an ice-cream before a clime or after a successful return...or both.

Having tried many (most?) of the ice cream shops in Florence, including those such as Vivoli with a stellar reputation (very disappointing), this one beats them all. Il Gelato di Filo has a good choice of flavours which, unusually in Florence, includes liquorice, and the gelato itself ticks all the boxes for flavour, consistency, portion size and service. A little... More

This place serves homemade gelato in many flavors. After trying gelato in many different places in Italy, all 4 of us agreed that this place had the VERY best gelato!

With all the gelato places in Florence, this definitely makes the top of my list. We discovered this place on our trip last year (as a way to make the climb to Piazza Michelangelo more tolerable, we grabbed ice cream for the journey!) and it still remains my favorite after this second return a year later. Well worth the hike... More

We made the mistake of buying gelato in / near the center of the tourist area (near Ponte Vecchio, etc.) We found this place with delicious, well-made gelato, at a price that didn't break the bank! And friendly staff, too. Thanks much!

Stopped by here on the way back down to town from Piazza Michaelangelo. It was a very welcome rest and dessert after a warm day.

Staying in Piazzale Michelangelo

Neighbourhood Profile
Piazzale Michelangelo
Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!
