Strange welcome! Our reservation was for 7:30PM and we (with 2 other parties) showed up at 7:25PM in drizzling rain. Additionally it is hard to find (poorly marked and poorly lit). They came to unlock the door to tell us we were early (by 5 minutes!). They then locked the door for the next 5 minutes. Service was very good... More

We have been going to Trattoria Sostanza for years and never miss an opportunity to go there when we are in Florence. In fact, one summer, we ate there 4 times in one month! The Pollo al Burro (chicken in butter) is the best chicken dish you will ever eat, but everything at Sostanza---the pasta, the omelet, the steak, the... More

I first went to Sostanza in 2014 based on a recommendation from a friend. I was skeptical when I was told by him that I had to order the buttered chicken given that is not the typical dish I think of when I think Italian. The buttered chicken is amazing and might be the best dish I have ever had.... More

Discovered this restaurant through a clip on YouTube. The decor is very basic, old fashioned but nonetheless lovely. The service is friendly and efficient. We ordered the peasant soup and a home made meat carpaccio followed by their famous butter chicken (I know it does not sound like much but is nonetheless amazingly the most tasteful and tender chicken I... While I wouldn't describe the food at Sostanza as sophisticated or elegant, it's really tasty and satisfying. Lunch there included tortellini al ragu, chicken breast in butter, artichoke omelette/torta (all the dishes they appear to be known for), all of which were delicious. Service was friendly and efficient as were the kitchen staff who peered out and asked how our... More

Came around 21:00 with no reservation, but was lucky to be seated around 21:30. All tables were reserved. The food is traditionally toscan. Had the buttered chicken and spinach. Good, soft, very much like Vinner Schnitzel but with chicken not veal. Not a cheap dish, 20 Euro and side dish is extra (6-8 Euro). It was good, all other visitors... More

Love this old school Trattoria- they have 2 seatings and they clear the place out after the first. All the food was god, but the chicken cooked in butter is amazing- never had chicken done like this. The staff is very friendly and efficient- great evening.

So we've read all the reviews and watched the reviews on You Tube. We booked ahead for lunch just before leaving Florence by train. We didn't have long to eat, maybe an hour at most, but we really wanted to eat here. Florence is a nice place to visit, the food is great but expensive. Not sure we'd go back... More

One of the best meals ever. Butter chicken, artichoke pie and the pavlova with wild strawberries. Yes, I could hardly walk afterwards but what a treat! Very fun, noisy, family style seating and reservations are a MUST.

We ate here after being disappointed by another recommendation---boy, were we glad we did!!!! Great food, from starters to dessert (Butter Chicken to die for, and the wild strawberries with cream was amazing). They have two dinner seatings, and you're sat with others----give it a try!!!

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
