Just off a transatlantic flight on a cold and nasty day, jetlagged and unable to check in to our hotel, we decided to "kill some time" at this nearby restaurant, and we were SO glad we did. It is in one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam and exudes charm and character, located right on a canal. The wait staff couldn't have been more kind and the breakfast was fantastic - just what we needed to start our Dutch experience and feel so welcome. Go there if you can!

This cafe needs to advertise better. It is in a great location on the water’s edge, with a pretty tower and views all around. We passed the blackboard outside every day - it said they did pancakes and takeaway. Wow - so lovely inside, very welcoming staff and we had brilliant food. There were breakfast choices too - so my husband had eggs (3 is standard) with bacon and I had a breakfast plateau which was a roll, cheese, croissant, jam, juice and a hot drink. Our teenagers had pancakes and were all happy as they were quite large. The whole bill was EUR 81 which is the cheapest meal we’ve had in Amsterdam (for 5 of us). You can get a croissant, butter and jam for EUR 3.75 so you can actually have a budget breakfast here. The couple next to us had come in for coffee and Dutch apple cake. I wish we had found this place earlier.

A lovely situated bar/restaurant with a terrace that overlooked onto the canal. The weather was so hot when I visited and so sat inside for some shade which was lovely. I was served by a lovely woman who advised me on portion sizes and I'm glad I got two croquettes instead of three as I thought they would be like British sized croquettes but no they were much bigger. I went to the ladies toilets down some awkward steps and was surprised to see that I was water level and a duck swam past! But i would recommend this place for food and drinks and a relaxing atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff too!

Thank you very much for the review! Happy to hear the trip to the toilets was not for nothing as you could see the ducks swimming by on the same level as you were. :)

Our Hotel is just 2min walk away and we visited twice on our trip. It’s very centrally located, less than 5 mins from Centraal Station and right on the end of the canal with a great view up the canal from some of the tables. It was very wet and cold on our first visit and we were pleased to have a snack and some drinks to dry out. The Apple Pie was great and the Fries generous along with a decent dark beer and a Gluhwein. We returned a few days later and had a meal including Satay, Club Sandwich and more Apple pie. All of the food was well prepared and served hot and really enjoyable. It’s a good option for either snacks, drinks or a full meal and the long history of the building is the added attraction.

In addition to the awe-inspiring historic architecture and lovely outdoor canal view, the food at Cafe de Schreierstoren was very tasty! My husband and I both had Tostis – I had the Tosti Caprese with a delicious pesto sauce; he had the Tosti Hame & Cheese. We enjoyed our sandwiches very much! For desert, we had a pancake with fruit – also delish!

I arrived in Amsterdam with my family at around 11am. Having not eaten, we were all ravenous and came here due to its convenience - just a stone's throw from Centraal Station. The cafe has a gorgeous, cosy atmosphere. It helped that it was still decorated so beautifully for Christmas. The menu was wide ranging and a little pricey - but this is Amsterdam we are talking about. I got some fries with mayonnaise and ketchup, washed down with a coffee. Lovely stuff. Toilet was also cool to go to because you went down two flights of stairs so were level with the water.

Stopped for lunch before walking through the city. Started with bitterballs which were wonderful. They are fried beef stew balls served with mustard. Ten was plenty, especially after we received our Irish burger with fries. I didn’t have the dutch pancakes but they are generous in size n look amazing. The service was great. Plus I love the history of the establishment, 1487.

We had a lovely lunch here on the terrace over looking the canal. The food was really good, we had the Irish beef burger and the veal croquette... both were cooked well and tasted great! The service was fast and friendly and everything including the drinks were reasonably priced.

Ordered pancakes, they were stone cold not sure if this is how they serve them here generally. Expensive for one pancake, toppings extra. No pots of tea, just a cup and teabag for English tea. Would not be interested in going back.

Really nice feel about the place, staff were nice. The toasties and pancakes were nice but the coffee was great. I did feel the food was overpriced but we are in the city centre so we should expect that really. Worth a visit for sure.

Thank you for your review. Although Prices are a bit higher than outside Amsterdam, we stand behind the prices due to the quality/overall experience we can give as we are located in the oldest defence tower of Amsterdam. :)

Set by the canal, this lovely, historic building is home to such a lovely cafe. We had delicious pancakes and a few cheeky beers. If you come to Amsterdam, make sure you make time to stop here. It’s very close to Central station.

Ambience of the old building plus a beautiful view looking down the canal made it the perfect spot for breakfast. Friendly courteous staff were very much appreciated. Will definitely go back before we leave for home!

Great spot to relax after visiting the sights, built into an ancient tower. The outside area sits above a canal and affords great views to watch the world go by. We enjoyed a pancake and beer - refreshing & tasty. The inside reflects the ancient history and information about the tower's past can be seen on the external walls.

Food was bland and cold. Very unappealing. The only nice part was a good view while sitting outside. If you come only have a drink!

Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
