This is my second time here and I absolutely love this place. The friendly atmosphere twinned with the exceptional food make this place a must on any visit to Amsterdam. The staff are funny and always attentive. It's an unpretentious well thought out concept and one which others could well do to emulate....We will be back

Had dinner here at the recommendation of our hotel concierge. There is no menu, it changes, so the waitress will verbally explain what your choices are. The muscles were fantastic. The steak with strawberry sauce was *ok*. Of course prices are not listed anywhere that I saw and they were not mentioned, so if you're looking to eat on a... More

So very glad we chose this restaurant for our last evening in Amsterdam. The understated decor showed the gorgeous food and the extremely accomplished waitresses off to perfection. As someone who has done the job, trust me when I say it takes skill and charm, of which these two women have in abundance, to pull off what they do when... More

Love this little gem. It's a small restaurant. They don't do reservations and no menu involved. The waitress/waiter tells you the menu when you are seated. The food was delicious. I wish there was a location in California. The total of the bill between me friend and was under $100. We had 7 glasses of wine. Mussels, a cod dish... More

This place was fantastic. The food and service were excellent highly recommend! We had a beef tenderloin with a strawberry sauce that was cooked to perfection! Along with a coconut chicken dish that melted in your mouth! Great dinner and afterwards you can take a walk to see the castle.

without knowing a thing about this restaurant, we looked for options on the entrance and got in. while we waited at the bar stools, we had a beer (fantastic one! gulpener) and watched the intimate environment the restaurant had. we were seated in 15mins, by these amazingly nice waiters and they told us the menu kneeled before us, like whispering,... We visited this place after a great recommendation from a friend and we were not disappointed. We had expected it to be busy and to have to wait as you can't make a reservation but we were told it would be worth it. It was. We were greeted straight away by very friendly staff and provided with drinks while we... More

Myself and my husband were really looking forward to trying this place, we walked by and saw the restaurant rammed full, which was expected, we didn't mind waiting from 19.45 to c21.00, we were expecting it, given the reviews and we were happily perched at the bar with all the other happily waiting guests (they don't take reservations). The Staff... More

Description
Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter.

Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
