Small restaurant in the jordaan. Fixed 3 course menu. Interesting food. I had the hake withhazelnut and bread sauce with potato and brussel's sprouts and my friend the rib eye steak with pastis sauce, snail risotto and yellow beets, all of which were great. The appetizers were good, not amazing. The desert was a miss. Blood orange on creme fraiche and caramel sauce...to... More

Took my 2 children (15 & 12) last night on a 3 day half term mini break. Great atmosphere and friendly charming service. They wolfed down the 5 starter tasting menu and the red mullet or quail main course (both delicious). We had to ask for one pudding only to share as all too full. Great fun for those prepared... Delicious, amazing food. The fixed menu must offer the chef the opportunity to focus on excellence because my three courses got better and better. Best food I ate in Amsterdam.

this tiny, characterful restaurant is true gem! At once authentically local with mainly Dutch guests, and also extremely warm and welcoming to international visitors. The interior looks absolutely stunning, with very few tiny tables, intimately close together, in full view of the open kitchen, where you can watch attentive, competent and extremely friendly staff preparing your food. The set 3... More

We arrived exhausted from a long walk and a 9pm second sitting. The set menus with mixed starters a meat or fish course and a tart for dessert was a delight. The clientele young and as many very fashionable same sex couples as mixed. An eclectic but good wine list. With fab soda siphons for fizzy water. Staff were very... More

We stumbled across this little gem after reading 'the lonely planet' guide online. We were warmly welcomed, at 7pm on a Saturday evening, without a booking. The restaurant was full but they found us a table. Unexpectedly, they told us what we would be eating! as the restaurant has a set menu, you simply chose between meat or fish. We... More

Very tiny restaurant with tables extremely close together. 3 course set menu but you do have the choice of fish or meat for the entree. 5 appetizers to start, delivered on an elevated stand above the bread basket. Unusual combinations, well prepared. Entrees are more home style and good. Dessert for us was a well made mini pavlova. Cappuccino comes... More

This place pops up on nearly everyone's top ten list, so I decided that merited a special occasion meal, my boyfriend's birthday. I indicated as much in the online reservation, and though was not expecting cartwheels upon arriving, the fact that it was never mentioned suggested at the start that guests are something that happens here, whether or not they... Now this Balthazar doesnt have the decor or vibe of New York or London but the nearly set menu is better, the service is friendlier and you can sit next to the (small) kitchen. The menu changes weekly and comes from local produce. The wine list is local too. But you have to book in advance

Description
Balthazars Keuken restaurant in the heart of the Jordaan district is one of Amsterdam's most special restaurants. It is a long, narrow space set in a former smithy, with scrubbed wooden floors, an open kitchen with pans and utensils hanging in plain view. The moss-coloured banquettes, unadorned wooden seating, and plain white table linens add to the ambience of simplicity and relaxation. And it's tiny, seating just about 30 inside and a few more on the bijou terrace in fine weather. 'Romantic' must be Balthazar's middle name, in spite of the plain surroundings. Owners Karen Gaasterland and Alain Parry create internationally-inflected three-course fixed-price dinners, with a menu that changes every week. They create. You enjoy. No choice about the dishes, though. The starters are tidbits meant to appeal to all. The mains are perfectly-sourced fish or meat with sides. House wine is from the Languedoc, chosen to complement the Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Dinner and lunch from Wednesday through Saturday. Groups up to ten can dine in the restaurant then, or hire the entire venue for private events during the rest of the week. Very popular, very packed.

Staying in Jordaan

Neighbourhood Profile
Jordaan
One of Amsterdam’s most preferred outdoor markets and some of the city’s favorite watering holes are but two of the many reasons to save ample time for a stroll through this especially convivial warren of narrow streets with its unfair share of quirky shops and quality galleries. Historically a haven for the working class and emigrants, these days the Jordaan is better known as an enclave for artists and designers. As popular as the Jordaan is as a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike, the area never feels particularly touristy or overrun with outsiders. A highlight even for long-time Jordaan residents, be sure to accept any invitation to step within one of the area’s beloved courtyards or to have a sneak peek inside one of its many working studios.
