Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place has everything. Great location by the canal, friendly staff, tasty food and caters to all food choices. Our family is made up of one meat eater, one pescatarian and one vegan and we all found excellent food for ourselves. And while one obviously...doesn’t choose a restaurant for its coffee, I was very pleasantly surprised to end my meal with a superb Cortado. Leiden is a lovely town with clean streets, lovely canals and a short 30 min train ride from Amsterdam.More

We ate there on a quiet evening, it was lovely outside with views over the water and park. The food was fabulous (even though I had a bad mussel that I spat out barely in time, was a bit poorly that evening but not too...bad. I saw later that a number of my mussel shells were broken - those should be thrown out. I used to work in a fish restaurant, and we were extremely cautious with shellfish). The service was friendly but appallingly slow and forgetful. I ordered one of my drinks exactly five times. Waited so long and the restaurant was really very quiet. The food arrived in a timely manner but we had to constantly repeat our requests for drinks and water. This restaurant is not cheap, but the food is really quite good.More

Service was so slow, forgot the bread and salad which accompanied for my wifes lunch, plus had to ask for napkins and forks. The quality of the food was ok, but in our view the portions were way too small and not worth the prices...they charged. I guess we paid for the location at this place. Either way, we won't be going back.More

In short: small dishes, full taste of prepared with care. In other words restaurant quality tapas/mezes but then hiding under the nomer of shared dining. The lovely modern interior, even though it is situated in an ancient city gate, helps. Not cheap, but still highly...recommended!More

This place has a lovely setup outside. I haven't tried the inside seating area. Weather was sunny and sitting under the outside tent with a it of breeze was lovely. Service was super fast. We ordered the vegetarian Borrel planken for 2 and some beer...and proseco. The borrel planken is a must try. I have tried the vegetarian option however there is another option with salmon and meat instead. Generous portion and so tasty. The bread was not enough so we asked for more and we're given more without being charged extra. The only downside is that they do not have a lot of options for lunch.More

We went there on a cold and windy summer evening and after ordering we were left waiting more than one hour for the food. After one and a half hours waiting in the cold and the food didn’t arrive p it became clear they had...made a mistake with the order. They proceeded to charge us for the drink and no food was given!!! Terrible place.More

The restaurant is situated in the old gatehouse, and has a large terrace which (I guess) can be nice in summer. We were there on a Monday evening, and it was very quiet. The restaurant serves fish in all kinds of shapes and forms. Prepared...nice. We took a 'love to share' menu, consisting of several shrimps as starter and fishes. They were well prepared, however did not inspire me a great deal. Overall i guess it is nice to go there in summer, but for a great fish restaurant there must be other places in Leiden.More

We eat there with the family on a Saturday night. We had a very nice evening with a very good treat by the waiteress. We had the starter plank. Then we had Mojama en Vitato Tonello. Then we had a variety of dishes: the mussels...curry marsala, the gamba's, a lobster and twice the Fruits de Mer. As the Fruit de Mer (for two) came with only one oyster we had to order some more. This all came with French Frieds, mayonaise, Majoli, Kikkoman mayonaise. As a dessert we had crème brulée. All in all a very nice restaurant with a good atmosphere and waiting staff,More

This delightful and popular restaurant is in one of the old city gates a 10 minute walk from the centre of town. There is a large glass conservatory that houses most of the tables. it is light and bright. Staff are not all efficient, but...are pleasant and do try to be helpful. The menu consists of dishes that seem too cheap! This is because the norm is to order and share several little dishes rather than a standard three course meal. Chachun a son gout... but we managed to order so we got our meal as we wanted it in a traditional course format. Gaspacho was peppery and delightful. Our fish dishes were lovely and the portions not small at all. And the chips were wonderful. Wines by the glass were good value and a lemon and elderflower presse was lovely and summery.More

If you are lucky to get the attention of the waiters/waitresses, then you'll have to wait for a long time before you even get the menus, then get the orders and then be served. Very sloppy! They are obviously not interested in customer service. I...had a party of 3 and noticed that it was the same poor-quality service all over the terrace. The food per se is not bad, but I will never go again. It's the third time that I tried at various times and it won't happen again. Much better (and friendlier) places at Leiden harbour area.More

Perfect place for a seafood dinner. We ordered variety of small plates to get the feel of their food. We did not regret it! It was ALL good. Tried mussels, cod bites, fried squid and shrimps and scallops - all perfect. If you are I...the area and like seafood, go there!More

I just had a dinner with my family at this restaurant. Although initially the stuff seemed very cheerful and helpful by the end of the eve they managed to ruin it all with their clumsy service. We got 3 wrong orders; some of the meals.../ drinks we had to order a few times before someone actually brought them (one of the waiters kept forgeting/ ignoring every single order we made with him); some of the orders never arrived; we asked a few different waiters for the bill and waited 30min before someone finally brought it. Nevertheless I must say the Netherlands in general has a rather horrible service therefore this experience is maybe just normal. The food was delicious but rather expensive for the amount we got. The venue itself is very nice though (although we witnessed 2 people using the little park across as a toilet which was not very pleasant to see while dining). Conclusion: will come back for a beer during a quite afternoon but surely not for a dinner.More

We have been there for a dinner. Very nice restaurant right at Zijlpoort of Leiden with a beautiful outside view. Just a little bit too noisy inside. The service was really gentle and explained us the menu.. a kind of Tapas, mainly based on fish....The food was good and the final check absolutely affordable.More
