Fitzgerald, A restaurant where I have been before with great pleasure, i found out to my great surprise I only posted 1 photo of it on my instagram, time to write a more complete review because it’s what this restaurant deserves at least.
This restaurant...is located on Gelderseplein in the old harbor of Rotterdam.
A restaurant named after the writer Fitzgerald who once said: too much of anything is bad, but too much Champagne is just right” well! I’m fine with that. Remco Kuijpers likes to cook here on a classic base but with a modern twist and got a (in my opinion) well-deserved star in 2018.
Fitzgerald is chic without being stiff, here no table linen on the wooden tables.
Fitzgerald also has a wooden floor that contrasts beautifully with the dark blue walls, the chairs have a trendy green color and the open kitchen is beautifully made.
Everywhere you look, wine cabinets have been incorporated into the furniture. I love it!
The moment I enter the restaurant I am recognized, in fact; out of a short conversation it appears that they know exactly where I was seated before, nice! It feels welcome and appreciated.
As soon as we are seated, a bag hanger and table water to our liking arrives as well a beautiful thick book called the wine list is pressed into my hands….
As a wine connoisseur I can only say that this makes my heart jump.
Yet I choose a wine that I drink more often, simply because it is possible: Hemel en Aarde 2017, a delicious full chardonnay with oak, butter and vanilla from the Newton Johnson family from South Africa. The cork is beautifully presented and the first toast has been made, this promises a beautiful evening.
It’s time for not one, but two amuses.
1. Cucumber with pistachio and codium
2. Pineapple ice cream, Madame Jeanet, red curry & soy foam.
The cucumber can honestly be called an innovative combination that I have to get used to but it is certainly not bad, I like all the ingredients that are in it so this one is fine.
But then! The ice with the foam!!
The whole combination is fantastic and brings everything on your tongue in terms of taste, texture, hot and cold. What a tantalizing sensation, very well done,
I would like to get an amuse like this every day!
The menu is given to us.
The choice is 5 courses for €90,
6 courses for €110 or
7 courses for €130 or, of course, a la carte is also possible.
We opt for the exception: Menu Fitzgerald 5 courses for €160 but with different and even better dishes than the other menu’s.
there is a small sentence on the bottom of the menu:
*you can also choose cheese instead of dessert for €9 extra
and of course that is what I definitely go for!
I can’t wait for this sizzling party to start!
A greet from the kitchen follows.
Sashimi of yellow fin tuna, roasted sunflower, vinaigrette of sudachi and mayo with padron pepper.
The tuna is tender, the flavors complement each other and it looks lovely.
A small snack that gives a smile and is therefore fine.
After serving the greeting from the kitchen it’s time for or first dish.
Toro with imperial caviar on top, sugar snap with a little bit of oyster leaf vinaigrette in a combo of jumbo and dashi, kumbo based cream, yuzo based cream and finger lime.
The tuna is again tender, but unfortunately the caviar falls away quite a bit in this dish. The cream, on the other hand is tasty. A ok-ish start, let’s say mediocre.
May I take this moment to post a compliment? The service has been fantastic so far, we have never had an empty glass, the staff is attentive and fast.
The meal continued with carabineros;
deep-sea shrimp from Polanen, romesco, white peach, goat cheese and a bouillabaisse.
The shrimp is gently cooked and tasteful with the bouillabaisse.
The goat’s cheese has a fantastic taste with thyme through it but unfortunately the romesco is much too bitter in my opinion…. Luckily I can just leave it at my plate. It is pleasant that the bouillabaisse is served at the table.
Before the first meat course and with an empty white bottle we are asked if we like some red wine. Not a bottle but a glass in this case: Barolo ‘Perarmando’ 2017. Having these great wines by the glass makes happy 🙂
With a Barolo in my hand I am ready for our meat dish!
Kagoshima wagyu A5 with fresh wasabi, eggplant and radish sauce, mushrooms, pomzu & egg yolk sauce, wasabi and watercress.
The Wagyu is tender but with a delicious greasy edge.
The aubergine is nicely leavened, only the additional vegetables are slightly too salty.
This time they came to plan the wasabi at the table,
again nice that interaction with guests!
It’s time to describe my favorite dish of this meal, the main meat course!
Foie gras de canard, compote based on plums, on the bottom a cream of umeboshi (fermented Japanese plum) brioche, sauce of plum wine and pink pepper
I like foie and this one is just perfect!
The umeboshi is super sweet but truly a marvelous combination with the liver.
It’s just all the way it should and therefore my favorite dish of the day, it really made my tastebuds jump for joy!
Remember that we chose for a selection of fine cheeses instead of the dessert? Our plate couldn’t been better! It came together with a brilliant dessert wine : Casa del Inca 2015 Ximénez and a fig cookie.
It was an enjoyable experience at Fitzgerald.
The food was great, the service truly impeccable and the atmosphere during the evening pleasant. I would definitely love to come back again.More
