We were expecting great things given the previous reviews, but we were quite disappointed. The food was generally good (the salt marsh lamb rump was particularly good, scallops let down but a very sickly sauce and overpowering pancetta, great terrine and well-filled steak pie). Wine...was very average but pricey for what it was. However, the ambience was awful - brightly lit, shabby dining area stuck seemingly as an afterthought at the back of a busy pub. As a couple, we were placed on a table for 6 (made of smaller tables pushed together, so could have been separated), less than a foot from the kitchen door. Not conducive to a romantic and relaxing meal, and certainly not what we expected for the prices. Service was fairly chaotic too - we were not greeted as again we would expect. As others have said, a warm welcome for locals, less so for visitors. I suspect it’s no. 1 in Oxney because there is literally nothing else - it’s in the middle of nowhere! It was a shame as we were on a much-anticipated weekend away after several months of working extremely hard and not seeing much of each other. Wouldn’t go back, nor recommend to others.More
