Travellers' Choice
2024
The Ferry Inn is an ancient, Seventeenth Century pub and restaurant that was the home of the ferry between the Isle-of-Oxney and the English mainland at Appledore. It is situated in the midst of beautiful countryside between Tenterden, Appledore, Stone-in-Oxney and Wittersham and adjoins the historic Saxon Shore Way. It is also only 6 miles away from Rye and Camber Sands. The Ferry Inn, also known as the Oxney Ferry, enjoys late sun and beautiful views all year round from the pub's front terrace and riverside garden. It offers an extensive selection of award winning ales and fine wines in both its restaurant and bar areas. The Ferry Restaurant offers locally sourced, freshly prepared and cooked food in a beautiful countryside surrounding. A selection of freshly caught fish is available year round, and specials in the winter months include a selection of locally sourced game. The Ferry Inn is nearly 300 years old. Wally Milstead, who was the Landlord of the Ferry for over 30 years, provides a potted history. The Saxon Shore Way, which passes right by the Ferry, is a 163 mile walk along the coastline of Roman times . The Ferry is tucked away on the South-Eastern edge of the Isle of Oxney, on the old road through Stone from Wittersham to Appledore.

I’m compelled to write a review as we love this pub. Always receive a nice warm welcome and recently they have had a beautiful, tasteful and in keeping with this period building extension/dinning space. If you like amazing food, a cracking environment to relax, open fires and great staff you’ll enjoy this place.

We were told the food was good and this certainly wasn’t disputed. We were advised the burger was off the scale delicious - again true. Our daughter -who doesn’t eat meat - had a wide range of foods to choose from, she opted for haddock in a lemony sauce which again was of outstanding quality. We sat outside with our dog, and watched the sun go down, a beautiful end to an unseasonably warm autumn day. The sunset spread a warm apricot across the sky over the landscape, sadly none of us are painters, but it is worthy of study by someone more talented than us. The staff displayed just the right amount of service making this an experience we will certainly hope to enjoy again.

My wife and I were staying in Peasmarsh for a 4 day break as it was my Birthday . We wanted to celebrate with our daughter and family who live in Hastings . It was a great experience helped by the brilliant weather . The Pub has an interesting history as it was originally on an Island and still is technically I think. We had a lovely table which was at the quieter end of the Restaurant . The service was great and the food delicious and I thought reasonably priced . It was a Sunday so two of us had the Roast Lamb with all the trimmings which was £25. My wife had a delicious Home made Steak and Ale Pie for £17 . I would definitely go again next time we are in the area.

Delicious food, very friendly staff, great atmosphere and lovely fire. Visited having seen previous reviews and decided to try for lunch. Service was great, extremely attentive and nothing too much trouble despite the fact it was busy. Burger was great and loved the fact wasn’t in a bun but extremely filling so had to bring half home. Scallops delicious . Not the cheapest of lunches but having already viewed the menu before visiting we were aware of the costs and it was certainly worth the price. Would definitely visit again

We came in last night with our friends for my birthday and the food was exceptional. Everyone was raving about the quality of the food. Service was very good as well. We both had 3 courses and 2 alcoholic drinks each for £90 and for that quality and delicious food, amazing value in my opinion. We have eaten regularly at a lot of pubs near us but the ferry seems to consistently be a cut above the rest.

Highly praised pub that we looked forward to visiting. However, not made welcome on arrival and had to wait for attention The service was appalling to the extent we were brought desserts that had not been ordered. Food was pricey (which was expected) but never provided value for money. The sole at £26 was too fresh ( foodies will know that it should rest for a day before cooking). Generally disorganised and a disappointment.

Looked forward to our Sunday Lunch at the Ferry Inn but were very disappointed . The starter of Devilled Kidneys on ‘artisan bread?’ was disappointing, very weak tasting and the Honey and Spelt bread was a soggy disaster. We had Roast Leg of Lamb for mains and the lamb was tough, the vegetables were over cooked and soft and we had a fine , pale hair in the cabbage. The price of one drink was taken off the bill for the Cabbage Hair…..? All this for just under £100.00 for 2. The young staff were very pleasant but shame about the food. Unable to recommend.

We have been eating here for many years - this was the first time since the recent renovations. The food was as delicious as usual, but several large tables of noisy people ruined the atmosphere slightly for us. The waitress was sympathetic and, without us asking, offered us a quieter table, We will return, but definitely not on a noisy Saturday evening! Outside tables in the summer are usually our preference. Let’s hope the pub’s continuing expansion doesn’t ruin the traditional feel of this lovely pub.

Can only agree with the many other positive reviews posted, cannot fault the pub. Take my hat off to them for serving the burger in a tortilla, far better than burgers that are gaining increasing height and end up slipping out of the bun! Many pubs would envy the number of customers on a Wednesday in January, but the barman managed them professionally even when many descended on the bar simultaneously. Dog friendly and footpaths right outside. You can even land your helicopter in the adjacent field, but lacking a chopper the car park worked well for us. Our understanding is that some rebuilding will commence later this month and the kitchen will be down for some time. Suggest calling ahead to avoid disappointment.

Fabulous location, great building, nicely laid out inside with plenty of room at all the tables, excellent selection of good beers, 18 gins and what looked like an interesting menu. Unfortunately the food was decidedly average. We both had scallops which were nicely cooked but bordering on cold, the chips were hot. For dessert dad had apple crumble and custard which he said was nice but a disappointingly small serving of custard, both lovely and hot. I had what was described as sticky toffee pudding which was basically cold sponge in cool sauce served in a cold bowl. It came with a generous portion of double cream which was served in a small jug oddly sitting in the sauce. I didn’t get a chance to mention it to the staff who were busy but at no time enquired if everything was ok. It wasn’t bad enough to complain but it was decidedly average.

So looking forward to visiting the Ferry Inn again but left sadly deflated and won’t visit again. The young waitresses were 5 star, but the food was expensive and 3 star, burnt toast, tepid steak and undercooked chips and for £28 the steak was thin, flat and tasteless even when warmed up again. Half a portion of custard was served, however it was topped up when mentioned. Wine was good tho! Had this been my pub I would have offered a goodwill gesture but sadly not. Hope we just had a bad night, an expensive mistake.

For the second time on a Friday lunchtime we were very disappointed with the food. We did not complain as we were with new friends. The food was served only warm and not hot at all. Perhaps the chef doesn't work lunchtimes anymore. If we go again and we are regulars there it will only be on a Saturday lunchtime. If the food is poor again we will not go back at all.

We visited the Ferry with high expectations but were disappointed by the food, which was pricey but very ordinary and by the service, which was well-intentioned but clearly lacked training. The beer was good quality and a very good Malbec enjoyed. Lacks finesse.

What an absolute gem of a pub. A must visit if passing even if it’s just a one of the well kept ales. It appears that people travel from the surrounding villages to eat and drink here which adds the lovely atmosphere. The waitress was lovely, really looked after us and always had a smile on her face despite being very busy. Food - very good, fresh and good portions. One of the best meals we had put as family for a very long time. We left feeling very content with our experience.

This was a last minute booking so the downside of my review is because we were seated in the bar right by the main door and as the pub got busier we were surrounded by drinkers at the bar whilst we were eating. A lovely pub tucked out of the way and we arrived before 7 to a full pub indoors. I cannot fault the Menu it was varied and you would struggle not to find something that you liked. Our food was very good, we had starters and mains and shared a pudding. I wouldn’t say the main hosts weren’t over friendly but the ladies that served us were very pleasant and to be fair I was very surprised that the food came out as it did as the pub was extremely busy. Hats off to the Chef and all in the Kitchen. I would definitely recommend and visit again 😊
