A hidden Yorkshire gem! Great pub grub, great service and fair prices. We had Sunday lunch which for two courses was £18. My wife had prawn cocktail and I had the black pudding stack - two pieces of black pudding sandwiching a bacon slice in...a mustard sauce. The roasts come with interesting veg for a change - cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, carrot and swede mash and green beans. Highly recommended!More

I was visiting a friend in North Newbald and needed two nights accommodation. He arranged a room at the Gnu for me and it was just perfect. First of all they took the trouble to get a key to me and turn the heating on...even though they are closed on Mondays. Second the bed was so comfortable (I stayed in Room 3) I upset my wife by telling her that it was better than home. And finally they did an early full English breakfast for my friend and I because we had an early golf tee time in Beverley and it was just the best. I love visiting Yorkshire and it’s actually probably because you get a level of hospitality that is just so so nice. The Gnu is not the Ritz but I bet the welcome is better, the hospitality is greater and you cannot get a pint of Black Sheep at the Ritz.More

We decided to try the GNU Inn having never visited previously. Lovely village pub and a great choice for Sunday dinner. Both me and my husband had the pate starter which was lovely. We asked for more bread and was given it at no extra...charge. For main course my husband had roast beef and I had roast pork. Both enjoyed our meals and had plenty of veg, we couldn’t manage dessert. I think the price reflects the quality and quantity of food. Looking forward to visiting again during the week!More

We booked a table for two Friday 3 March (2 people) 6.45pm. The table had a reserved sign, with our name & time on. Always a lovely warm welcome, landlord and landlady so friendly and pleasant, along with all the staff. The food is home...made, such good quality ingredients, cooked perfectly, and all served with a smile and a friendly chat. Thankyou to "Team Gnu" keep up this very high standard. We had a selection of the sharing platters, as didn’t want large portions of a meal that may be wasted. Just the right size for those without a great appetite.

We had Sunday lunch and really enjoyed it. Good sized portions of meat, Yorkshire pudding and several different vegetables all well cooked and presented. We also had a dessert which was equally delicious. The bar staff and waiting staff were all friendly and efficient and...we will definitely return to The Gnu the next time we are walking in the area.More

I rang the pub on the Saturday afternoon asking if they had a table for Sunday lunch explaining that I couldn’t give an exact time as we would be calling in after walking in the area but expected it would be between 1:30 and 2pm....The gentleman I spoke to said that would be fine and he would book it for 1:30 and not to worry if we were slightly late. As it turned out we arrived around 1pm and were greeted by who I presume were the landlord and landlady. They were very welcoming and when I explained that we were actually a bit early it was no problem and they showed us where our reserved table was. 2 pints of Black Sheep Ale were delivered to our table and the waitress promptly brought the menus and specials board for us to choose from. We both had the roast beef Sunday lunch which came with Yorkshire pudding, boiled and roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, carrot and swede mash, green beans, red cabbage and extra gravy was offered if required. Both the ale and food were beautiful and when polished off we couldn’t resist dessert. One cherry crumble with custard and one syrup sponge with custard were also excellent washed down with another half pint of Black Sheep Ale each. The locals we got talking to were very friendly and chatty, the young waitress was very pleasant and the landlord and landlady could not be faulted, all that with a final bill of £37 we will definitely be back in future.More

Excellent pub food served in a lovely country pub. Lee and Carol are friendly and attentive hosts and have brought the Gnu back to its former glory. Great menu and delicious well-cooked meals. The special nights (burger night, pizza night, steak night) are brilliant value...and excellent quality with meat supplied by the local butcher. Full disclosure: we are locals! Love the Gnu.More

Hadn't been for years, but 3 of us were walking in the area and we dropped in for lunch. Lovely to be greeted by so many cheerful faces. My American niece was even offered a taste of various ales before she chose Black sheep. There...were lunch deals to include small meals (probably not small?!) & wonderful ciabatta's which we all had (club sandwich for 2 of us & a glorious halloumi sandwich for me). These also came with lovely chips and salad. We'll most certainly be back (except our American visitor) as it was such great value!More

We are regulars at the GNU and love the friendly atmosphere along with the excellent landlord and landlady. The food is excellent, fresh and great value. Fish and chips gets a 10/10 from me. Sunday lunch is fantastic and the chefs certainly know how to...cook traditional pub food. Keep up the excellent work team.More
