Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I had lunch at this restaurant, with high expectations, because of favorable reviews I read about two signature dishes, “Alhada de Cação” and “Galinha Tostada em Azeite”. The dogfish was fine. The hen (tasteless chicken) was a disappointment.

What an amazing place. We mistakenly arrived before they actually opened at 7.30pm. However we ordered drinks and drank them outside until the restaurant opened. We had booked and that was just as well as the place was fully booked and lots of people arrived...and were turned away. The food was excellent and really plentiful, even the 1/2 doce we could not finish. We were told we would be treated like family and we were, with excellent friendly efficient service. Its easy to see why it is so highly rated.More

A typical family owned and family restaurant in Alentejo. If you want to eat like the Portuguese, it is the place to go: excellent food and service at reasonable price. But don't expect any sophistication. Nice terrace and more room inside. A reservation especially on...weekends is a mustMore

What a find! We asked a local if there was a good restaurant as we were starving, having just arrived from Spain. He directed us and we parked in front of Il-homens restaurant. The very friendly owner showed us to our table in the small,...cosy dining area full of character. I mentioned I was disappointed that lamb chops were not on the menu that day. He immediately told us he had some so we enjoyed a feast of beautifully prepared delicious lamb chops etc. The wine was great and we chatted to the owner who gave us the history of the restaurant, which was the family house originally. We praised the dish we had eaten and he joked and said he had ordered the chops for his families Sunday dinner! I looked so concerned he hastily said he was ordering more so relax ! We loved our first meal and recommend this unique little restaurant. We stayed in Marvao overnight.More

Friendliness and good service Alentejo style from the moment we entered the restaurant to the minute we left. Excellent food - we started with a special seed filled cheese and for main course the best Alhada de Cação we have ever had followed by a...chicken dish. Dessert was farófias. The wine selection was a very chilled vinho verde that just slid down our throats to accompany the fish dish and an easy red to match the meat dish. As we were about to dig into the dessert we were offered a glass of blueberry liquor, which bottle was left in our table for a second round. We couldn’t recommend highly this place for the food and for the service. However, be warned, if you’re expecting fast service this is not the place for you 😉More

Small and compact, this family run restaurant offers special hospitality and local dishes at great value. The owner is friendly, most helpful and speaks English. We ordered the dogfish soup (must-try local specialty), the venison, wild boar & chicken (made traditionally to celebrate new borns...in the family). Ignore the accompanying chips, the flavours were simple and delicious. We tried the house white wine, again delicious and great value. Finished with a spoon of the local dessert and a complimentary sip of Ginja - the sweet fortified cherry liqueur. Delightful and must visit for everyone visiting the area.More

This is a fab restaurant with a lovely, accommodating host. It's the real Portugal - family run, great food and wines, a friendly ambience and good prices. Lovely in winter and summer. The Portuguese had nailed good eating out long before it became a 'thing'.
