About
29 years ago, in the same place our restaurant is located, we opened a small wooden bar that little or nothing resembled the current space of O Luar da Foia. Since then, the desire to innovate, preserving all the local traditions, and the desire to transform Monchique into a gastronomic destination of excellence have always been nourishment for our success. However, nothing would be possible without the tireless work of our team and the enormous pride and love we have for the village of Monchique ... They are what define us. Come and try the flavors of our land at the table of those who know them well ...

Views are spectacular from atop the mountain, the restaurant has its own car park which is great, the staff were all well trained and very attentive. We hadn't booked (recommend you do) and whilst clearly busy, this wasn't a problem. We were lucky and still got a seat with a view! The veal with gorgonzola was of high quality and portion generous. European medium is a little on the rare side for me, but this went straight back on the grill and was returned just right - no easy task for a fussy customer. The house wine was also evidently well chosen and delightful. Prices range from roughly €12-€20, which for the quality of the food and service + the views, seems great value.

Enjoyed our lunch here. The view from the outdoor patio is worth the visit. The food was pretty go too. I had the wild boar and the good wife had the bream. The waiter was kind enough to remove the head, the tail and most of the bones. Both dishes were tasty and came with rice and fried potatoes. The restaurant was packed both inside and out when we left.

I had received a recommendation for this restaurant on Facebook and it didn't disappoint. There was some confusion over our booking, but we were given a seat on the terrace with panoramic views. The menu offered something a little different from traditional Portuguese cuisine, but all ingredients were local and fresh.

As a previous reviewer commented absolutely no time to relax. Went in with my 5 year old daughter at around 7pm even before sitting down and time to take in the view their normal starters were pushed on us and at the table within 30 seconds. 1st waiter came within 2 minutes and of course not ready to order, then again 2 mins later, then the manager/owner 2 mins later and at that point he got frustrated and said we had to order soon. My daughter is fussy and the menu is more suited to the adult palate and only offered tuna as a fish dish which would t work for her so I insisted on another minute to which he huffed off. At this point I wanted to get of here as they were more keen on a quick turnaround than offering any friendly relaxing atmosphere. To add insult to injury I was then charged €25 for a little cheese, cured ham, bread and a glass of wine. Certainly not a restaurant to choose with young children and you want to relax without feeling the clock is on you. The manager/owner was awful and made me so angry it ruined my night.

We are locals living in Algarve and decided to spend a weekend in Monchique doing some walks and enjoying the nature to relax. We heard about Luar da Foia before but never got a chance to visit, our expectations were quite high. We were welcomed by an arrogant waitress (I don't know if it was because we spoke Portuguese or the way we were casually dressed) and the service was even more arrogant and not friendly. I seriously had the feeling they did not like locals at the restaurant since the same waiter was friendly at other tables (I hope to believe this is not the case as other customers reviewed the place with the same negative point: arrogance). Unfortunately we did not feel welcomed at all, like they were doing us a favor. The food was too expensive for what it was and it was not that tasty. We had pork fillets with bread mash and pork leg in the oven, both were overcooked, the bread mash was ok. The ambience and view are very nice, but when the service is bad you forget about that very fast. Maybe the owner needs to give some training on how to give a friendly service.

Let’s start with positives. Very well done for the kitchen and chefs as the food is exceptionally good. We had 2 different starters and 2 different mains to check and compare flavours and quality and it all was so nice and beautifully served. All set in a nice surroundings with lovely view on the hills and Algarve cost! The biggest let down of the place is the service. Not attentive and not friendly. We felt forgotten and worse than other clients of the restaurant. 20 minutes wait for the bill was beyond I’ve ever experienced in the restaurant. If you don’t mind to be excluded like us I think it is still worth visit however based on our experience I would not recommend. Disappointed in the end and it’s a shame of the service only as the dishes are really great.

Great views, super service and good food. There is not a lot more to say. We arrived without booking around 2pm and were lucky that some people had just left a seat with a side window view. Friendly helpful service I would highly recommend the starter of mushrooms in port and honey

Staying in Monchique for a couple of days, we went to this restaurant for lunch and diner. Lunch was very good with a wondefull view on montains. Chorizo with quail eggs, grilled pork were very good. Only the casa red wine was not good. Dinner, we had soup and chorizo again, then grilled tuna and shrimps too salty: And this time a Pacheca red wine, more expensive but good. Both time, I finished with a mousse de manga, excellent!

The restaurant is located in the middle of the mountain, with spectacular views. A pity that it is blurred by its lousy service... As soon as we arrived one of its waiters treated us in a very bad way, with airs of superiority and arrogance. And worst of all, it was not an isolated incident. Except for one waiter, the rest were quite rude. I've been going to the restaurant for 10 years, and I'm afraid I'm not going to come back anymore.

A fair drive for us, but so worthwhile. The menu is different in that it includes meats like piglet, goat, black pork; not found on Algarve coast menus. Add to this a fantastic view (if you get the right tables) and very efficient service. The standard of cooking was also high. We did not book for a Sunday lunchtime visit, and were lucky to secure a table, ten minutes later and queues were forming. Needless to say a definite recommend.

Excellent food and service. The restaurant run two sittings and so to speed things up encourage diners to start with freshly carved ham, local cheese, bread and olives. There is an extensive range of mains which are interesting, well seasoned and generous portions. Our table had the black pork with bread mash, lamb chops and chicken kebabs which were all cooked on the grill. The pork came with a watercress and orange salad which was very refreshing. Puddings were good and again generous. There were some wines being decanted but the house carafe was good value. With the view, would very much recommend.

Popped into this place on the way back from the summit of Foia. The amazing views were surpassed by the excellent service and wonderful food. So impressive to be shown the fish of the day at our table! Each of the four meals ordered (including one off menu for a fussy child) were delightful. Tasty, great portions and beautifully displayed. We were made to feel welcome immediately. Been coming to Portugal for 15 years and I now have a new no.1. Thanks to all the staff.

We were seated on the outer veranda with a view down the valley from the Fioa mountain. The restaurant’s name means moonlight on the mountain Fioa. We enjoyed the couvert starters comprising bread, cheese, olives and cured meats. Our daughter ordered a chicken kebab, which turned out to be a large espetada which she could not finish. My lovely wife had a veal steak with Gorgonzola sauce which she enjoyed although it too was a large portion. I ordered the grilled sea bass which was very good. We finished with an excellent desert wine. Very friendly and helpful servers and we would highly recommend this restaurant

The stunning ocean view over the hills of Monchique, this place has awesome food and service. Staff is quick and attentive and always serve with a warm smile. The food is locally sourced and their specialty is meat 🍖 on the grill 🔥 with grass fed, free walking cattle in the savory hills. A must when you visit Algarve. ♥️

We have visited many times. We have never had a bad meal. From the second you walk through the door, the staff are friendly, fantastic with our baby who loves them all. The food is exceptional. On this particular visit i tried the recommended special “milky hand of lamb” and it did not disappoint. Thoroughly recommend this restaurant. Can’t wait to be back again next month.
