Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's a popular place and feels quit cool and easy going with many sailors having a beer there but service is really average to bad. They don't care to serve you...they make you feel you are bothering them. They work without reservations but with waiting list but they cannot really estimate when you will be seated and if its going to be inside or outside. Food was ok...I really liked the barracuda (fish of the day) and the fish soup. Tuna steak was a bit overcooked. The signature gin is overrated for my tastes. It was OK. Overall you may choose to go there to tick a box for a popular place but if you don't find space... don't consider it a miss!

Nobody can visit Horta without a trip to Peter's bar. especially to enjoy the world famous Peter's gin and tonic.
The food is good, varied and in generous portions to appease a keen appetite fed by the sea air.
Service is terrific and all staff speak amazing English.
Prices are very reasonable - no wonder it is so popular. We ate here several times, at both lunch and dinner.

The famous gin and tonic was very average, the next drink our server suggested with gin, honey, and OJ was outstanding. The food was also average (the receipt proved the kitchen messed up our order but we managed). Overall the waitstaff was amazing, the food and drinks were decent. The atmosphere was great. We loved sitting outside under the tent.

We visited Peter’s Cafe Sport in early March as it seemed to be pretty popular in Horta. This was our first night in the Azores and we wanted to try some fresh fish. They had several fish dishes on the menu, and after trying to understand what these were and how they were prepared, we ordered four different fish dishes, including cod and some breaded ones. The net of it was that all 4 were almost un-edible. It was as if the chef took four fish, used a cleaver to chop them into portions, then selected the portions with the most amount of bones and least amount of meat, and served these. We literally had to pock through each serving trying to find a morsel of fish to eat, with little success.
We did enjoy several gin-based cocktails which were good. So go for the drinks and atmosphere, eat somewhere else.

This is a typical example of a famous, quaint restaurant that doesn't bother to please the customer. Table reservations that are not guaranteed, waiters and waitresses that don't know the menu, no flexibility in the orders... Of course, the food is good and tasty and the prices are attractive... but...

The outside dining area is beautiful...then it stopped. The staff ignored the diners, talked to each other and their friends while we waited 30 minutes to put in a drink order. We were so glad to be served, we ordered everything up front. Four entrees were ordered and they all lacked flavor. The squid ink pasta was the most bland. But the location is great.

This is one of those iconic, unique places that make the world a better place and make travel so much fun. I consider it an honor to have visited this establishment and consider it one of the highlights of my visit to the Azores. Do not be swayed by any negative review, this place is exactly what it says it is - a historic sailors pub! Anyone expecting fine dining should visit Paris. Anyone expecting smiling service should stay home and eat at an Applebees. Peter’s Cafe Sport should be enjoyed exactly the way it is, no different than any other cultural treasure. And if it wasn’t perfect enough, there is the most outstanding collection of scrimshaw I have ever seen just upstairs through that unassuming little wooden door. I can’t wait until I get to visit again.

I’m waiting to join a boat which just arrived from Bermuda and have ended up eating here 3 times in 2 days. There are 2 reasons; Duarte will deliver in a dinghy to my fellow crew members who are quarantined at anchor for 24 hours AND the food is fantastic! I ate tuna steak, vegetarian curry and Sailor’s pot roast. All delicious - sorry no photos - I ate everything!

If there's one thing everyone should do the moment they arrive at Faial island, is to get a table outside, on Peter's deck, and order a Gin do Mar. Just those 10 minutes of enjoying the sun and the breathtaking view of Pico mountain while sipping a delicious gin (they have their own brand and recipe) is enough to put a smile immediately on your face.
Moreover the staff are all super nice and funny, and really make you feel you're welcome there.
The fresh fish (tuna specially) and the really tender steaks are also another excelent reason to go to Peter for lunch or dinner.
Lastly, and maybe what really sets Peter apart from all the other bars/restaurants is the mystique of sailormen tales that you feel when you step inside the cafe. All those flags hanging on the wooden walls, give you an idea of how much history and how many epic stories must have happened there. If you want to know these stories like i did, i highly recommend you visit the ScrimShaw Museum. It's fascinating!
All in all 100% worth the visit and repeat it multiple times.

Worst service ever. We made an order for 5 people, we waited a full hour and then they told us that they did not register our order and that we would have to wait at least another 15 minutes. Terrible service and rude workers. Don’t recommend.
Gave it another shot, asked for the menu, waited 15 minutes and had to go inside to go after the menus myself. Again, terrible service. The outside tables are nice but you have to pay an extra 10% for the amazingly terrible service.

We went around 4:30 after a long hike and were very hungry. The waitress was disinterested told us the only things we could order were snacks because the kitchen was closed. We ordered the Peter’s gin & tonic, which was very good. The food as good as toast can be. By the time we got our drinks and snacks it was about 4:50. The waitress never mentioned that the kitchen opened in 10 minutes! She knew we were looking for a meal. If you go, go for the drinks and the view don’t bother with anything else because the wait staff will just ruin the experience.

We ate here a couple of nights and can recommend Pete's steak, ( a rich dish of fillet steak and sauce0, the burgers and tuna steak were also good options. Service ranged from ok to good, depending on who served you. We ate outside with wonderful views over the marina. Great Gin too.

We had low expectations due to the negative reviews, but ended up going back twice which says a lot. The staff were always very polite. Once they forgot one of our appetizers and apologized profusely, even though it was really not a big deal. The gin and tonics were the best we have ever had, and we also loved the fish soup and the grilled tuna. The atmosphere itself is truly unique and special. A must-visit in Horta.

Waiters are very rude they talked to us as little children, I never seen something like that. It's a shame because I was very well received everywhere on the Azores. They are sitting on the fame built by previous generations.

I was at the resturant Today, with my girlfirend.
We eat two soups, a grilletto tuna and a grilled octopus. Everything was really good.
The bill was not expansive (50 euro).
The location is fully of history and very particluar.
If you are at Horta, you have to visit it!
