About
A familiar project started in 2002, the first to build was the Restaurant Fornos de Lava. The restaurant has a panoramic view build in stone, wood and glass, over an old threshing floor where the food is made at the old style with fresh local meat, fish and seafood. The employees as the atmosphere of the restaurant and Hotel, make an effort to please the costumers. Good will and attention are the house rules.

This is probably the only very good restaurant in Velas. After the bad experiences in town we ended up coming here twice for dinner and we were extremely happy with the food, the service and the atmosphere. It's out of the town therefore you need a car (or taxi) but it is really worth the trip. It's a slow food place, if you are in a hurry or you are a nervous person this is not the place, you need to wait 20-40 minutes for your meals but who's in a hurry visiting Azores? While waiting for your meal the warm bread is great and you can have an excellent bottle of Azorean wine for 12€ (Faria's vineyards). We had excellent grilled fish once and another evening a fantastic fish cataplana. Surprise, there was even an excellent dessert from Alentejo region ("encharcada") which was simply delicious. The service is attentive and friendly. The room is nicely decorated, warm and welcoming. Excellent ratio quality-price. If we would have stayed more nights at Velas we would definitely come here more times. Forget the basic restaurants in town.

We thought we could walk to this place!! If you take the ferry from Pico you MUST take a taxi. It is at the top of the hill. Felt like a mountain. Nice family restaurant with good view. Staff did not welcome us nicely. We just stood there and had to introduce ourselves. Food was acceptable nothing special. The best part of the meal was the starter….homemade bread baked with sausage. The bread is baked with small bits of sausage inside. Order a couple as your starter. Our main course was the fish and shrimp in the tangine. Needed more seasoning. Perhaps even some salt but I hated to ask. Our server had very little personality but was polite. We always enjoy more friendly staff at restaurants but she was quite disinterested. A change from most restaurants we had been to on Pico. It was fun to have so many children and families in the place. My husband tried the “encharcada” specialty dessert and did not like it. Very sweet and odd texture. Others adore it so just a preference. My crème brûlée was good not great. Good atmosphere but just acceptable food. Some staff looked friendly. Our server was not.

The place is very cousy and the food is very tasty. We ordered some Lapas and then fresh fish (Pargo) and a nice beef stake with Sao jorge cheese. Everything was delicious and the sidings are local and super tasty (green beens, sweet potatos). A bit pricy but worth going!

We enjoyed an excellent dinner at this beautiful round restaurant with a wooden roof. We loved the gorgeous views on the Pico vulcano. The location of this restaurant is stunning. But be warned: this restaurant is very popular, so make sure you have a reservation beforehand. During our dinner we saw several people who had to be turned away. We ordered the cataplana with lapas, seafood en fish. The dish was beautifully presented in a copper cooking vessel. The portion was huge and we only ordered dessert because we were keen on trying a local dessert called encharcada. The eccentric waitress told us that this dessert was invented by monks. We decided on sharing our dessert, which was no problem at all. With our dessert we dronk a local liqueur. Highly recommended.

We went to this restaurant on the last day of our stay in São Jorge, to end our vacation "on a high note". I don't need to say it was a "big" disappointment. I read some reviews here about this restaurant, and one detail that several mentioned was the lack of friendliness on the part of the employees. I subscribe. The customer service at this restaurant is not the best. There is, in fact, some lack of friendliness and care, which is in line with the various reviews I read here. As an example, the employee responsible for our desk showed a huge lack of skills when it came to serving the public. For a restaurant that is mostly frequented by tourists, one would expect the menu to be explained or, at least, that some information about it would be given. None of these happened. Note that this restaurant's menu is short, which means that it wouldn't take much effort for the employee to explain the dishes we selected, or provide other information, for example, which dishes were not available. Along with this lack of consideration, this employee made some unfortunate comments with a tone of superiority that only demonstrated her lack of education in general, and towards the customer. We ended up calling another employee, to whom we reported the situation. This second employee alerted the initial employee immediately, and even confirmed to us that the employee in question is regularly warned about similar situations, which proves that this said employee does not have the appropriate profile for this type of position. From then on, the initial employee did not return to our table, and we continued to be served by the second employee who was exceptionally friendly and competent. In other matters, the lighting in the restaurant is quite poor, and we had to use the light from our cell phones to be able to understand some of the ingredients that were served. Another thing that disappointed us was the fact that this restaurant only serves dinner, we arrived at 7pm (opening time), and two of the most sought after dishes on the menu were not available. Additionally, we tried calling several times but our calls were always rejected. Another detail, the cutlery is of very poor quality. The fork of one of our group members fell apart during the meal, and two others were also close to the same end. When it comes to the quality of the food served, one would expect more. The food is tasty, but not worth the price they charge. There are much cheaper restaurants that serve much better food.

Very, very poor experience. Excessive waiting time between plates, more than one hour. When the main dish arrived, it was a minimal quantity. They treat customers like fools. A plate of fish was 80% vegetables and 20% fish. Combined with the price, it makes it not worthy of being considered.

An experience that I recommend and that when you return to the island, it will be a place to repeat! Delicious food, with bread made at the moment and served warm. Very good price/quality with well served doses. Service of excellence, with professionalism and sympathy of both employees who served us. To conclude, a wonderful view under the Pico Island. For lovers of Trufas it is mandatory to eat the Chocolate Trufas and chocolate with coconut for dessert. Rating 5/5.

The restaurant looks good, has a good view and if it were a recreational space I would give it a 5. However, starting from the starters, (São Jorge Cheese as an experience and in its own right this did not do justice to the product). As for the meat dishes, most were not available despite being told to choose on the spot when booking. The choice fell on fish rice with limpets and prixe cataplana with shrimp. Both dishes didn't have much flavor, I would even say they were cooked separately and finally placed in the cataplana to take to the table. For dessert we chose the large Azorean pineapple, which turned out to be small and tasteless.

I would have gladly given the maximum score but too many dishes from an already limited menu were not available. Positive notes: The best prawns I have ever eaten, excellent desserts compared to the quality found here in the Azores, spectacular view of Pico island. Negative notes: long waiting times, unfriendly waiters (not rude, but sulky: guys, a smile costs nothing!) too many dishes from an already limited menu were not available, too bad!

Good food. Good wine, Good people. Good view. Good time. Our appetizer consisted of the lapas, and they were expertly cooked. The wine suggested by the team there was spot on and worked just fine with our meal. The Gin & Tonic for my wife seemed to have been great. Our main was the seafood stew over rice. It as great. We cannot remember the desserts name.........but that was great also..........picture attached. When visiting Sao Jorge again, we will visit here again!

Undoubtedly the best restaurant we visited in the Azores. The food was deliciously prepared. We loved it so much that we came back a second night. The first visit we had their cataplana seafood dinner for two which included fish, shrimp, and clams in a delicious broth. The second evening we tried their steak. The filet mignon was mouth watering. The service was delightful. Laura, our waitress was attentive and charming. Please give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

The best meal we’ve had in the Azores, and the best I’ve had in the US as well for a long time. Shrimp and fish cataplana was absolutely delicious, seasoned perfectly and friends loved the filet mignon as well. Beautiful location and stellar service, we will return here for sure!

Unfortunate!!! It had been made Reservation in advance and the menu had already been chosen, however we had more than 2 hours until we got dinner. However expensive for the quality of the dishes presented. A dialogue attempt was made with the cook (the mistress's niece) who reacted inappropriately and prepotently.

Unforgettable dinner....From barbecue to dessert, food served "hot", which is difficult to find in the Azores. Characteristic setting with a view of Mount Pico, prices adequate for the food served, a special mention to Natascia: kind, prepared and diligent. Hum precisely the waiting times...I recommend ordering an entry.....
