What an incredible experience!!! My wife and I dined here while on vacation in Europe. We are both Americans and had little knowledge of Fado music. Just like numerous others have written, it truly is a family experience with incredibly gracious hosts in Duarte and Marina. The food was excellent. You are given a choice of red or white, pork... Duarte and Marina Santos are the gracious hosts of this intimate restaurant in ancient Alfama, Portugal. Together they do it all. She cooks the traditional Portugese meal consisting of seafood and/ or pork, and he is your waiter and bus boy . Although you are a complete stranger in these surroundings you will feel as though you are family or... More

This is not just a restaurant, it is fine food with Fado music after the delicious meal and you stay with the most friendly family who make you feel at home. Duarte welcomes you and plays the guitar later. He explains what Fado is all about, while daughter Nadia brings the starters and the decent house wine.A lot of the... More

The first thing to decide about Fado in Lisbon is do you want a glitzy show or an authentic "home" experience. If you choose Sr Fado it's because you like the idea of a group of people coming together in a small setting to share food and music together - both of which are wonderful. It is the sum of... More

Good traditional food! small restaurant, filled to the max. After dinner (around 11pm) the wife/cook turns into a fado singer, husband plays guitar and sings along. In our case they didn't stop and we managed to 'escape' at 1:30 am. Unfortunately you are not being served while they performed so we ended up being real thirsty. It would have been... More

this response serves only to clarify to everyone that read that is a BIG LIE, one can not ask for drink when the show begins. Just do signal the bottle of water or wine jug, to immediately Ana Marina, or his daughter Nadia or his godson Bruno, lead him what they asked for a sign. Where before we start the... More

After reading the last rewies we thougt it could be the place we were looking for. But it was only a fado for tourists. We want more genuin but Marina is very professional. The food was ok. But our focus were the music and it did not fullfil our expectations. Not one only local! The place were packed with tourists.

seems that settled the war between the homeowners. Lisbon and the Fado were fashionable this summer, and opened houses like mushrooms, now is the winter, reservation requests the fall and the war for survival begins, then begin to speak ill of those who work and have honest comments made by customer indeed, trying to tarnish their image to try to... I came back for the third time,as this is without doubt the best Lisbon Fado Restaurant. Marina,Duarte and now his daughter Nádia..Genuine people who love what they do and try to show to the people who visit them as is to go to the house of a Portuguese. I do not agree anything with the previous review, because it can... More

I fully agree with Nora's review. Great efforts go into making all the guests feel welcomed and this is most appreciated. The food is adequate but the whole experience rather expensive. I would not recommend this place for authentic fado. Tourists beware!

When I arrived at Sr. Fado, my taxi driver was perplexed as to why we chose it over a professional Fado restaurant. At first I thought he was exaggerating but now I know why he warned me against this place. Sr. Fado is run by two very kind hosts but please note that if you are looking to hear/ experience... More

Customer curious you travel since 2012 with TA and only now make their first assessment and unique, curious also its profile, which says he likes to know the traditional customes and then come to comment these, which devalues the actual experience that we try offer our visitors. I did not realize yet sure what you mean by "professional fado "because... More

Description
On off the least pretentious of Lisbon's Fado restaurants is also one of its finest. Hosts Duarte Santos and Ana Marina treat guests as family and the homely ambiance is warming and inviting. The homemade gastronomy is noted for its textures and flavours and generous portions, with the seafood cataplana (stew) a much-lauded feast. The menu is limited, but here it's all about the quality of the food. As for the entertainment, this is local fado at its most authentic -- the singers and musicians have known each other for years, and the performance is heartfelt and genuine. Quite often, diners are invited to join in which makes the evening truly memorable.

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
