MICHELIN Guide's Point of View

Two MICHELIN Stars: Excellent cooking, worth a detour!
Very comfortable restaurant
About
Jose Avillez looks at haute cuisine as a form of expression. At the Belcanto he shares his inspirations, emotions and concerns through his culinary representations and illusions. Each dish tells a story and sets out to stir the emotions of those willing to try it."

At one time a convent, later a men’s club and now Lisbon’s most highly awarded Restaurant Rua Serpa Pinto 10a carries a lot of history, but since 2012 it has been the home of Chef José Avillez’s Belcanto and a modern interpretation of Portuguese Cuisine....One of the country’s two Michelin 2* kitchens, a visible space adjacent the dining room preparing two Tasting Menus daily, it is beneath vaulted ceilings that a meal at Belcanto begins quickly, an Elderflower Martini preparing and then cleansing the palate of a Steam Bun rife with deep-sea flavor. Arguably Chiado’s most diverse Wine cellar, hazy Serra Oca well suited to several early bites, it was after consuming Duck and Chicken Liver that the Classic “Belcanto Menu” officially began with raw and cooked Carrots in nutty Milk and bright spots of Citrus. Bathed in light at lunch, with excessively proper service, housemade Bread arrived next in four styles, both Corn and Olive flawless alongside three Butters preceding Portuguese Prawns again in light Cream with melting spheres juxtaposing Caviar. Just 45 seats, only half filled on a Saturday, those seeking a signature will find such in “The Garden of the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg,” its subtleties including an earthy linger and toasty notes that lead well to gently cooked Seabass in delicate Dashi. Technique-driven but decidedly “safe,” Squab cooked just past rare seeing its natural flavor muted by Cinnamon-forward Sauce, Avillez’s Nata comes savory with rich Custard that sets up well for an odd Dessert of Chocolate textures blacked out by Squid Ink. Tapping Chef Américo dos Santos for Pastry, “Sweet Egg Cream” actually quite sour, it is with a Dessert Napkin shaped as a sleeve that details of Avillez’s childhood are revealed before concluding in a Sugar-coated Bola de Berlim.More

We had the tasting menu and paired wines. Quiet an experience. Amazing dishes, great service. Not a quick meal - and not cheap - but worth it.

Bel Canto is perhaps THE top rated restaurant in Lisbon, at least if you follow Michelin star ratings. This two Michelin star restaurant deserves every accolade as the adventure of a meal here is unforgettable. The 14 course Evolution Tasting Menu was exceptional as was...the pairing with 8 wines. While the menu clearly changes over time, the standouts on our visit were the oyster and tuna belly tartare with borage. The confit egg yolk, smoked eel, vegetable cabidela and truffle “ash” was excellent. The springtime garlic shrimp with shrimp head curry, green apple gel, asparagus and coriander was remarkable. The hake in fig leaf dried fig butter and cured ham was exceptional. The roasted squab, which I was reluctant to eat, was superbly flavorful. In terms of the wine pairing, the white port and tonic “cocktail” that started the meal was a unique twist I had not expected. The assortment of white and red wines was thoroughly enjoyable and well paired at every step. The overall experience lasted almost three hours, so plan accordingly. The meal is also priced in line with the duration of the experience, but was worth the cost for such a memorable experience.More

We went for the standard tasting menu with wine pairing at lunchtime, and were treated to a beautiful menu of food and treats and some great wines, all presented beautifully and with very good service. It was all extremely enjoyable, but just having done a...number of tasting menus at very nice restaurants, there were probably fewer stand-out courses and we perhaps got a little less from the serving staff than we've experienced in other places, and it was one of the more expensive ones we've been to, hence not giving it the full 5 stars.More

We booked the chef's table for lunch and everything was perfect. The service by Ros was impeccable, from the moment we sat down. The courses were imaginative, beautifully presented and tasted divine. We had an amazing selection of starters, from oyster and tuna belly tartare...to clams with mushroom, bacon and plum, with squid, sardines and lobster in between! Then came the 'fish courses' of shrimp and hake, followed by a clever take on the local dish of suckling pig. What a memorable lunch. Well done chef!More

As much as we would love to write a rave for this restaurant we were a bit surprised it has two Michelin stars. We requested the full evolution menu with wine pairings the service was adequate for a 5 star experience. We expect more for...a 700 euro dining experience. The earliest courses showed promise (tuna tartare on an oyster) but as the meal continued we were increasingly bored with the bland progression. Wines complimented the dishes well; dare I say they are a requirement if you want a full mouth experience to compensate for the flavor profile of the dishes. The final savory course was an interpretation of pork I would more likely expect to find at a petrol station. I did not finish. Deserts were also satisfactory; which is different than saying they were satisfying. After having such high expectations…the three styles of infused butter served with the bread selection should not be the highlight of the meal. For the record, the three tables seated nearest to us seemed to feel likewise.More

I enjoyed every moment at Belcanto, Even though it is a fancy restaurant it gives you a very warm and cozy feeling. The service is fast and we were spoiled with some dishes from the chef's part that were not billed in the end. Beside...that the main dishes, starters and desserts were all delicious and beautifully served. The chef makes amazing combinations of taste. Definitely Recommend !More

To write in detail about my meal here would turn into a long book!! All I can say is, "Go!" This was one of the best meals of my life and I live in NYC and travel the world looking for the best dining experiences....The food is as delicious as it is beautiful to behold. Surprising and creative, a true gastronomic experience. As my husband and I say of the best meals we encounter, "a taste sensation!!" And worth every penny too!More

Simply put, Belcanto is a solid 2 stars. Food is inventive, surprising, precise and it just works. Clockwork mechanism perfection. Offers a great foray into Portuguese cuisine. Prices are more than reasonable reasonable compared to similar level offering out of Portugal, though I understand it’s...hardly affordable to locals as a meal for 2 might cost as a much as the minimum wage here. Nonu, the sommelier, was as knowledgeable as pleasant to converse with and the pairing was perfect. We will warmly recommend this place. It is, to be honest, a welcome change from restaurants of the same categories in France, that tend to be similar to each other. We really liked the carrot and milk appetizer and the lobster Caesar salad above all.More

Way beyond great food. Exceptional. But at an exceptional price. The Trip advisor estimate did not come close once the wine pairing was included. Over $400 USD per person. Great service. Subtle, almost indescribable flavors. Imaginative menu. Wonderful wine pairing. Was it worth it? Oh...yeah. If you can afford -- then just do it.More
