Our anticipation was high as we eagerly planned to dine at this 2 Michelin-starred Portuguese gem, renowned as the 24th best restaurant in the world by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Having made our reservation on June 23, three months prior to our Portugal trip,...our expectations were set for an exceptional culinary experience. Upon arrival, the hostess extended a warm welcome, and throughout the evening, the staff exhibited friendliness and a commendable knowledge of the menu, presenting each dish with detailed explanations in both English and Portuguese. The sommelier, though well-versed, directed me towards wines exceeding 90 euros, a departure from previous reviews. Perhaps I should have communicated my 50 euro budget upfront to align expectations. Opting for the MENU DOS CLÁSSICOS/CLASSICS MENU, a chef’s tasting selection, I informed our server about my allergy to cilantro. He accommodated my request diligently, ensuring none of my dishes contained this ingredient. Consequently, my wife and I experienced a variety of dishes. However, the consistency of the plates varied. Some were rich with flavor, while others fell flat. Given the restaurant's caliber, we expected every dish to be technically flawless, which unfortunately was not the case. In instances where we received seemingly identical dishes, my wife's plate had significantly fewer ingredients, leading to her visible disappointment. Belcanto fell short of its two-star Michelin rating in several aspects: My wife had to place her purse on the floor, contrary to other Michelin establishments that provide a separate stool for such belongings. Water pouring resulted in splashing outside the glass, with no apology extended. The service lacked seamlessness, with inattentiveness to refilling water and wine glasses. The table cleanliness did not meet Michelin standards, with crumbs lingering until the end instead of being promptly cleared between courses. Similar to another reviewer's concern about overcharged water, we encountered a similar situation. Whether intentional or an oversight, we wanted to bring this to Belcanto's attention for rectification and for the benefit of future guests. Despite the optional 10% gratuity and our extensive experience in Michelin-starred establishments worldwide, we found that, considering the price paid, Belcanto did not measure up to the standards expected of a two-star Michelin restaurant or its 24th place on the global restaurant ranking.More

This was my first two-star Michelin experience, and it was VERY disappointing. The food and service were subpar, worse than my experience at one-star Michelin restaurants. The food was okay, nothing spectacular but maybe it’s just not suited for us, which is fine. The atmosphere...was sterile. But the worst part was the service. 1) From the beginning, our waiter had requested that we notify the staff if we need to step away from the table to use the bathroom so the plates would not be brought out when we are away. The way it was presented to us was somewhat condescending. What is this kindergarten? Is it not the waiting staff’s job to observe when we step away? It puts undue pressure on the diners. Things only got worse from here. 2) After the first course, we had some crumps on the table. They were not cleaned. Few more courses later we were served bread, we had some more crumps accumulating on the table. We watched 2 more courses come and go after the bread, and the crumps sat there staring at the us and the waiter. Finally, my friend asked for a sweep, and the waiter did the most inexplicable thing. He cleaned my friend’s section and left everyone else’s untouched. Maybe he thought the rest of us wanted to savor the crumps for later? 3) Throughout the meal, we also had the pleasure of being accompanied by 2 fruit flies that would occasionally drop by to have a taste of wine and the food. At end of the meal, I expressed my concerns to the service manager, who came off a little defensive regarding point 1, apologized for point 2, and told us they have weekly fruit fly cleaning regarding point 3. We were offered a free drink or tour of kitchen which we declined. Nothing short of cutting our bill would have made up for the poor experience. In addition, one of my friends had a substitute dish and a portion of the dish was left out, and only brought out when we had asked for it. The fish dish was changed to a different fish (seabass) last second, which was different from the menu. We thought to ourselves that maybe we had unreasonable expectations, but we dined at Alma the day after, and the experience was night and day. If you are in Lisbon and want to try one of the two-star Michelin restaurants, PLEASE do yourself a favor and book Alma instead. Crazy considering the two restaurants are next door to each other.More

Belcanto is an excellent Michelin 2-star restaurant, one of only two in Lisbon. The atmosphere is elegant but casual. We enjoyed the Classics tasting menu, which amounts to 13 courses, including amuses and mignardises. Each course was delicious and the presentation was very good. The...sommelier was very knowledgeable and helped us select two bottles of white wines to pair with the courses, plus a red wine by-the-glass for the meat course. Service was prompt and very courteous.More

This is simply just an amazing restaurant. Everything on our visit was simply perfect. With a warm attentive greeting and all waiting staff informed, polite and friendly but never intrusive. The interior is slightly rustic but classy and elegant. We love trying the chefs tasting...menus when treating ourselves to a restaurant of this calibre. And both having the “Classic “ menu we were not disappointed. Each course was absolutely fantastic! Thank you Belcanto you certainly are up there with some of the best 2and 3 star Michelins in the UK that we have experienced ! Paul GMore

A special place. An experience. A wonderful way to cap off our love affair with Portugal. This is food art……first on a plate and then on the palate. An amalgam of tastes and textures unlike anything before. Service is excellent and efficient and the staff...are attentive and knowledgeable. The 10 course meal , even though it sounds enormous, has been meticulously designed to satisfy without overwhelming. Be aware that this is a very expensive place, and needs to be planned for well in advance. The menu doesn’t change from lunch to dinner. Plan on being entirely amazed by what can happen when cooking is elevated to an art form.More

One of the best meals my wife and I have had (amidst 44 European countries we have visited thus far)! Restaurant staff was very accommodating in spite of arriving without a reservation just before lunch closing. Beatriz was our exceptional waitress-knowledgeable and charming-with excellent recommendations....Highly recommend the carrot and olive starter (extraordinary flavor and creativity). The Rice from the Atlantic was simply delicious (we ended up splitting this due to how large the plate is). Then we ordered both the Apple & Rhubarb pie and chocolate cake. The photos attached do not do them justice (amazing tastes without being too heavy, and amazing attention-to-detail). Cannot wait to return. Worth every Euro and more!More

We were very excited to visit Belcanto during our stay in Lisbon. Top 25 in the world and two Michelin stars does set a pretty high expectation though. We had the Evolution tasting menu with the premium (not 100% sure on the name but it...was the top tier) wine pairing. The food was creative and good. To us, the stand outs were the red shrimp and the sea bass dishes. The true stand out of the evening was the wine pairings. The somm staff did a fantastic job in selections that elevated the dishes. Our somm, Ross, did a great job presenting each selection and we enjoyed our discussions with him. So why four stars? We have eaten at many top restaurants around the world and there was just something lacking. Perhaps presentation, perhaps the dishes falling short of "wow", perhaps it was our expectations. Our post dinner assessment was that it was a very enjoyable dinner, but it was not an "experience". We've enjoyed some fantastic dining experiences over the years. Some cost more than Belcanto, many cost less. We still talk about these experiences. I'm not sure we'll be talking about Belcanto in a year.More

The restaurant’s interior was charming and the staff was very well trained. There was an ala carte menu and a tasting menu but we were told that we could only choose one or the other due to the serving times. We chose the ala carte....The food choices were too exotic for my tastes. I don’t eat fish, caviar, liver, brains, seaweed and these foods are not to my liking. The presentation was exceptional. The taste of the beef tenderloin was average. The desserts were, in my opinion, better than the meal. Overall I found the restaurant to be overpriced and with foods I don’t care for though I was told that there is a long waiting list to get reservations for dinner.More

Tonight good fortune shined on us. We were wait listed for dinner and lucky for us there was a cancellation for a table for 2 at 19:30. We jumped on it, how can you say no to dinner at a Michelin 2 star restaurant that’s...also rated in the top 25 in the world? I know I can’t! They have 2 tasting menus and an ala carte as well. The first tasting menu is the Classic and that consisted of past favorites from over the years. The second option is called Enchantment and you have to be willing to “go with the flow.” How can you say no? We both selected the Enchantment and my partner had one of the wine pairings to go along with it. All I can say is that the meal didn’t disappoint it was truly a culinary treat. To tell you the different dishes wouldn’t be fair to the restaurant but below you’ll see pictures of everything! If you’re a “foodie,” and plan on being in Lisbon make it a point to visit. It is pricey but worth every penny. Last thing, to me which is important as good as the food was so was the staff they were absolutely phenomenal too!More

The restaurant itself is in a beautiful building and very classy establishment and as a two star Michelin place, one wouldn’t have expected any less for how attentive the staff is. My partner and I came for lunch and really wanted to try the wine...pairing without getting completely drunk mid day with 6-7 full glasses of wine, so we ordered one wine pairing to share. I have a few dislikes in ingredients and the staff adapted the dishes to accommodate to the extent that one of the dishes was completely different and they even changed my half of the wine pairing for it (my partner had the standard one for his half glass of wine). The wine pairings were really good and inventive with locally sourced wines. Particularly enjoyed the white port pairing with the foie gras amuse Buche which was a great alternative to the usual Sauternes. The food is, of course, absolutely perfect and well-presented as one would expect. The innovative twists to incorporate local and seasonal ingredients made it an even more interesting experience for me as a first-time visitor to Portugal. Absolutely loved this place and easily one of my top fine-dining experiences.More

We have been to the top restaurants in the world like Central, Disfrutar, Asador Etxebarri, etc and BelCanto as far as food did not disappoint. Nelson, our Maître D' was exceptional. We reserved the Chef's Table at the restaurant to have the ultimate culinary experience....The only thing missing from the entire experience was the Chef himself who was expediting in a kitchen right next to us but within the 3+ hrs that we were there never even bothered to say hi or introduce himself. However, we saw a group of French/ French-speaking patrons whom he was very much obliged to shake hands with and show around the kitchen. Could it be because we were a Chef's Table made up of Asian patrons and Latinos like ourselves that we were not given the same introduction or warm welcome from the Chef? I sure hope not. I have never felt the need of a review this long, but I just felt that if you pay for a self-proclaimed "Chef's Table" at a top tier, #25 restaurant in the World, the LEAST the Chef could do is introduce himself and wish the guests a nice meal. I have been to the #1 Restaurant in the world and never has the Chef been so pretentious, hence my review. Other than that, the food was great and Nelson gave a great service.More

I booked the chef's table through arrangements made by American Express Platinum. This was charged at a premium price. Generally, the chef comes out at some point in the evening, usually the end of the meal to talk about what we enjoyed and some small...talk. The chef was there, but he made no effort to greet us in his establishment. Furthermore, I have never felt so uncomfortable and judged whilst eating fine dining. I almost requested the check and walked out half-way though the meal. Nothing about it was enjoyable except maybe the novelty of eating at a Michelin star restaurant. I hate to be so critical, but the atmosphere of the restaurant and the food, compared to other Michelin star restaurants, left a lot to be desired. There are a number of other fine dining restaurants in charming Lisbon. Perhaps explore those.More
