Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Tucked away in a quiet side street this restaurant offers friendly and prompt service backed up by a varied menu and rooftop view. This always was a favourite of ours but we had not been to Funchal for seven years. Even so we were still...remembered and enjoyed our first return meal. Friendly and attentive staff, good quality food well presented.More

We loved the food, the service, the ambiance. Hidden gem. We were surprised that the restaurant wasn’t filled. The service was impeccable!

Dona Amélia is another example of excellent dining in Funchal, Madiera. We have been several times and have never been disappointed. Old world attention to detail, excellent service, and of course, delicious food. We have tended to select fish offerings (especially the Scabbard dishes), but...everything is wonderful that we have tried. Highly recommend the garlic bread as a starter.More

Quite an expensive restaurant with the food quality of an ordinary tavern. I don't recommend it at all. But to be fair - the service is good, people are nice.

Our best meal in Funchal. We always come here on our annual holiday and are never disappointed. The waiting staff are excellent - traditional high quality service but never intrusive. Great food, lovely restaurant.

Local to our hotel and recommended as traditional we gave this a go. We were warmly welcomed even though we hadn't booked. We had the special- sword fish. It was a good piece of fish served with reasonable mixed veg and 2 tiny potatoes. There...was a complimentary mini pastel de nata afterwards. It was all perfectly nice with a bit of a sea view but didn't feel very good value.More

Chose this restaurant without reading any reviews and we weren't disappointed. The food was fabulous and the service was efficient and attentive. My husband had calves liver which he thought was the best he's had in years and I had tuna steak perfectly cooked. We...will definitely be returning.More

We have been visiting this restaurant for many years and it is always a wonderful experience. Friendly staff, excellent food and a superb atmosphere. Its a lovely old style restaurant without music, television screens and always a pleasureto visit. On our most recent visit I had...melon & ham to start, my wife had prawns & avocado. We bothhad calves liver for mains and I had apple piefor dessert. A lovely bottle of Quinta Nova with coffee to finish. 117 euros and worth every scent plus a decent tip. Looking forward to our next visit later in the week!More

Fantastic restaurant. I love going to Dona Amelia and it’s always a highlight when visiting Madeira. The food, service and ambience are all perfect. We went on Christmas Eve as a treat and were not disappointed! Dona Amelia is the standard all restaurants should strive...to reach.More

Researched this restaurant and was not disappointed at all. Seated upstairs and able to watch chefs cooking. Rudi was excellent front of house - happy to answer all our questions and even found out information for us about the background of the name of the...restaurant. All staff were very courteous and their English excellent. I had the pork filed flambéed in Dona Josefina served with sweet potato and veg. Hubby had the calves liver with a reduced onion gravy with sweet potato and veg. Shared a passion fruit sorbet ice cream. Both had half bottles of wine - first time I’ve had a green wine (young white). It wit be the last. Complimentary traditional custard tarts with cinnamon. Thoroughly enjoyable dinnerMore

Excellent & very professional staff. Pork main course was very good. Prawn & Avocado starters ok but wouldn’t have them again - not enough prawns & avocado in amongst a plate of general salad and neither prawns nor avocado were the tastiest either. Fortunately the...pork saved the day - tender pieces cooked in a nice rich mushroom sauce.More

Superb food, great service and hospitality. We went to eat there on three occasions with friends on our recent trip to Madeira. On each occasion the standards were excellent and we look forward to visiting next year.

So good I couldn’t go home without a second visit! This restaurant gets it right every time and we’ve been visiting Funchal for 20 years now, hardly ever missing a visit to Dona Amélia. The waiters were so great, making sure we got the table...we wanted and very attentive. Do you ever have a dish that you enjoy so much, you keep thinking about it and crave it again? Well that’s what happened to me (Salmon Tagliolini in my case). I just had to return before I went home - delicious and my compliments to the chef!More

Sorry, I don't know where that hotel is situated. The restaurant is behind the the Savoy palace Hotel, if that helps.
