The restaurant is located in Monaethpaki near the Metro station. There several local buses that past near by and there is a taxi stand near the entrance to the area. The Akropolis is near by. The restaurant is large with two locations separated by a large walkway. There is free Wi Fi available in both locations. There is indoor and... More

We didn't went to the restaurant, we bought a lamb Gyro Souvlaki to go. The Gyro Souvlaki is different from a normal gyro, meat is cooked in a different way. Honestly, it was fantastic and enough for my husband and me for lunch! Service was nice, they were very friendly. We really enjoyed it. It's a cheap but quite tasty... More

Bairaktaris is located right opposite from Thanasis tavern in central athens in monastiraki square. The quality is the same as Thanasis. It is a very touristic place for anyone that wants to try the famous Greek souvlaki. I will never suggest a place that is so touristic as this though. If you want to eat souvlaki, go to a more... We were walking around downtown Athens and decided to go for a gyro/souvlaki that I remember from years ago. We decided to visit Bairaktaris which is located at a prime location and is very well known. I discovered after the fact that a previous PM used to eat there, I'm sure his experience was much better than mine. Let's start... More

This is a nasty tourist trap, in prime location on Monastiraki square. All the food we were served was totally inedible, the Döner is pre - cut, cold, limp, grey sliced mystery meat which tastes like dog food smells. They even managed to destroy the Greek staple tzatziki and turn it into some white slop. This is the worst food... More

We spent both two dinners here; just perfect! Noone should miss this chance coming to Athens! Live Greek bouzaki on friday & saturday. Best meat & excellent chicken. Especially lam kebab & burger. All the people are so wellcoming and so overwhelmingly friendly. This is our one and only option when we are back in Athens 😀

We weren't looking for much. The kids wanted Gyros but they wanted them their way. We were brought in and seated right away. It was 10 P.M. and the place was busy. The waiter took our order and had our salad and gyros in minutes exactly as we had ordered them. He also brought out some wine for me gratis.... More

This tavern, offering huge plates of traditional food at reasonable prices, is mostly frequented by Greeks. That says it all! Expect a great Greek experience and great service / hospitality

Staying in Monastiraki

Neighbourhood Profile
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.
