came here for some authentic greek cuisine. a lot of cheap vinegar in kalamata olives and eggplant salad. meatballs with THE sauce are made from the frozen meat and sauce from canned tomatoes with lots of citric acid. grilled cheese is so salty that seems it has a weekly amount of salt you need. as a cherry on top you... The decor, the atmosphere is worth a visit. It could be Marrakech with its comfortable couches, Haifa or... Athens. The food is not great but it does not matter, Kafeneio is in another world. Nice music to go by, pleasant lighting. Very interesting "unmarked" --meaning no-label-- syrah 2009 unfiltered which I recommend, as long as the stock lasts. The much... More

Nice authentic restaurant. We had dinner by the fireplace. Everything was to share. We enjoyed a.o. zucchini fries, dolmades and the meatballs with THE sauce. Only the rose wine was a different kind than we're used to at home. 100% recommended!

I enjoyed my meal at To Kafeneio, eating outside on the street. It was quiet and the food was good. The family of cat beggars were quite humorous as well. I recommend for a reasonably priced taverna that isn't in the thick of tourist crowds.

A twist above the average tourist taverna, a touch of something special still at a very reasonable price, well worth a step away from the hard sell tourist cafe's.

We loved the ambiance. The restaurant is on a quiet side street but near shopping so it is fun to walk nearby after or before dinner. The restaurant is tapas style. The food was good. We had the meatballs which were great and the portion was big. The fried cheese was too hard and thin. The mushrooms were ok. The... More

This place was like a glowing relief in a sea of generally boring food in Athens - it's branded as a tourist destination yet has some of the tastiest traditional Greek dishes you'll find in a restaurant in Athens and you'd be crazy not to check it out. As obvious as a Greek salad is, it's simple refreshing and perfect,... More

We loved the smaller share plates and wines here. Enjoyed sitting outside. Everything was very reasonably priced and staff were great.

Went here based on the reviews (off the beaten path, good small plates). Got an outdoor table on a Saturday night without much trouble. Waiters were friendly and attentive (and made sure the few street "vendors" that walked through the tables kept moving). Had the meatballs with sauce (seems to be everybody's favorite, with good reason), zucchini balls (excellent), and... More

Had this restaurant recommended to us by staff at our hotel as it's a place where they would eat. I was looking for something that locals like to eat at. This restaurant is truly special!!!! Tapas style dishes that you just order loads of to share with your friends. The Carafe's of wine are lovely and only about €5 per... More

Staying in Plaka

Neighbourhood Profile
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
