We were pleased to discover this place during a meander through Pangrati. The restaurant is found within a quiet green square. It has been in same place since the 1960’s, so must be doing something right. The menu was a quirky mix of Austrian and Greek. They had no problem catering for a gluten free diet. We particularly enjoyed the home made dolmades and a recommended lamb casserole with cheese. This was cooked in a clay pot that was ceremonially upturned in front of you on serving. We will certainly be coming back next time we are in the area.

The only complaint is that the restaurant would not take ANY credit card that was American based. They tried three different credit cards that would not work with the POS, claiming it was because they were American cards. My family has been using these credit cards all over Greece and Italy for years without any problems. It appeared that their objective was only to get cash. Warning to American travelers and very isappointing!!

Situated in the heart of the Pangrati area. We ate at Christmas day. Really enjoy the environment. The restaurant is old and classical, famous for the celebrities coming frequently in the past. There was live music on a piano and a performance by a well known old Greek singer. The food served on a buffet was very good. A variety of delicious desserts at the end was much appreciated! The personnel is pollite and service was fast. We will go again fo sure.

I had dinner at Magemenos Avlos last night with my fiancé and we were pleasantly surprised! Beyond the tasteful exterior, the food was mouthwatering and the service exceptional! We started with some escargot cooked with thyme, accompanied by 2 heavenly tasting buns. (I normally never eat bread but in this case I was forced to by my partner, for which I ended up feeling thankful for). My fiancé got a grilled Bream with greens and I chose the lamb cooked with lemon and thyme. The cooking was top notch, as the greens were dressed in a sauce which made them blend harmoniously with our respective dishes. The lamb was absolutely divine, and made me want to savor the taste for as long as possible! To top it all off, we were treated to an incredible poached apple with cream at the end. Can’t wait to go back, even writing about this experience makes me nostalgic!

The most disappointing restaurant in the area. I would suggest to skip the curiosity on this being the “oldest restaurant” in the neighborhood & go to one of the other establishments. The average waiting time for food seemed to be around 30 mins. The prices are extremely high for Athens. They serve you a sneaky basket of stale bread & charge you at the end even if you didn’t touch it. We had to dispute our bill. There are some amazing restaurants in the area & this is is just not worth the hassle.

Below please find the review I posted on the "Magemenos Avlos" site and which the kind administrator decided to erase. Not wanting to hurt the feelings of the adulating punters that preceded me, he/she kept only the acclaim. "Magemenos Avlos used to be an all time favourite with the menu comprising a variety of original and exceptionally tasty plates. Sadly based on last night's culinary experience, the emphasis should fall on the "used to be" . The salad, deceptively appearing under the "Nicoise" moniker, came deviously inundated in an ultra sweet yellow substance. So it came as a good thing that it contained no tuna, which would clash with the disgusting sauce. The mushrooms, must have been cooked in dead Sea water with some additional salt thrown in the pot. Absolutely inedible. And to close this pitiful narration just a comment on the entree, the "Hunkiar Beyendi". Usually a most pleasing plate of red sauce beef stew on a bed of eggplant puree. This is the dish and this was the description on the menu. Not according to the chef, though. For unclear reasons he decided to serve it (to gullible tourists, no doubt) with potato puree instead of the eggplant that tenders it delicious. Under protest the waiter managed 25 minutes later, to have it replaced with the real thing. However this new plate came soiled with sauce around the edge. Inspired by a Mr Bean movie the crafty waiter grabbed a towel from an adjacent table and hygienically wiped it clean. Let this note come by way of a warning. Keep away"

All staff was great, from reservation to ordering, to serving! Place is uniquely decorated, giving a sense of the past chic. Food tasteful and portions good enough. Must try the desert with champagne cream, simply amazing

A beautiful restaurant, very specially designed, but above all it is the delicious food and the personal and special service by the restaurant staff and by the owner himself. The evening was particularly pleasant, accompanied by music and singers who gave the place a special atmosphere and made it something unique.

I have been in Greece for ten days and this was by far my least favorite restaurant. The wine was overpriced, the food was okay, but not as good as other restaurants, their receipt was not accurate and they told us when it came time to pay that they could not process credit cards from the USA. It is the only restaurant on my trip where I felt I got ripped off. There are too many restaurants in the area so pick another one.

I went out for dinner on a Saturday night with no reservations and this restaurant had room for two so I ate here but the food was bland and cold. Service was friendly but slow. Seafood was overcooked and tomato sauce on the ravioli was boring. Save your time and money and go somewhere else in the neighborhood

Despise the beautiful square that is located and despite its reputation i 've never been served food with less inspiration and less taste before. Everything was awful. Even the salad!!! How does the chef manage such a thing? It needs really a talent. Even the portion was poor not only the taste. The waiter did his very best to save the situation but wasn't enough. Definitely i am not going back.

Pangrati
The elongated Panathenaic Stadium, built for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, acts as grand gateway to the otherwise purely Athenian neighborhood of Pangrati. This area of typical small squares, busy main roads and residential streets will give you a clear sense of what living in this metropolis is like. A walk up quiet Markou Mousourou Street on the west side of the stadium will bring you past the First National Cemetery to Mets, home to many expats. Turn right to reach the charming Platia Varnava. East of the stadium, commercial Eratosthenous Street leads to rather nondescript Platia Plastira, from where Effranoros Street continues uphill to Platia Profiti Ilia, crowned by a huge church. Among the standard four- to six-story apartment blocks that typify Athens, Pangrati also boasts some genuinely authentic tavernas and the odd trendy bar.
