If you are in the Monastiraki area, you will have no trouble finding Thanasis since it is the largest , most crowded , sidewalk tavern at the beginning of one of the pedestrian streets , across from the metro station. Although several places serve souvlaki , this is the best. They also have salads, tzatziki, τζατζίκι and a few other... More

We went on a Sunday, it was veeeery busy, but the waiter manage to find us a table to sit. He was very kind and treat us very well, speaking in English and helping us with the menu dishes. We eat chicken souvlaki (€9.50)on a plate and a kebab on a pita (€2.00), both very good. Although the large amount... More

The food was excellent, the best "giaourtlou" (kebab with yoghurt) in town". However the behavior of staff was unacceptable!! The waiter brought us different food than the one we ordered and when we kindly said we had ordered something else, he rudely insisted that we had made the mistake. When we kindly requested to take back the food and bring... More

The quintessential souvlaki shop of Plaka. Always busy but you never have to wait. The place to eat the original Greek fast food delicious!

Good food and attentive staff. We had Souvlaki, Kebab and Greek Salad all flavourful and nicely presented. In a busy area of the Plaka which means there are many touts and hawkers up but overall a good experience.

Everyone is familiar with the Thanasis in their home town. It is not the best food, or the cheapest, but everyone goes because, well, it is Thanasis. On any given sunny day the place is crowded, in the summer with tourists, the rest of the time with locals. The food is good and the service surprisingly good considering how large... More

Really good and tasteful kebab with a good and polite service. The atmosphere was fine but it felt a bit cheap even thought it wasn't.

The typical place for tourists- bad food - definitely not Greek (Turkish actually) and way too overpriced . It has a good marketing policy though and is very good located. I wouldn't recommend it though

Very good kebap, a choice of green hot peppers portion is must for me and French fries are fitting very well with tzatziki. Take away is also available. Price of kebap portion could be better at 7 euros instead of 9 euros. Therefore my suggestion is to take normal kebap souvlaki at 2,50 euros and fries, tzatziki.

Every last year better! Thanasis has been around for a long time and has long since given up trying. A decent cheap souvlaki right next to Monastiraki square...

Staying in Monastiraki

Neighbourhood Profile
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.
