Excellent kebab. The meat was cooked perfectly - seared just right on the outside and each bite from start to finish was really juicy. The prices were very reasonable and great value for money. The only let done was the service.

This place is great overall. Food portions were very generous especially given price (a gyro is €2.70 and it was huge!) but service was slow. It took about ten minutes for us to actually get a server to take our order and when the food was brought and we asked for water they never brought it. The mixed gyro plate... More

Nice, but overvalued. This restaurant is close to Acropolis, serving "kebap" to turists. It is good, but you can find better places for such dishes.

To be fair, three stars is probably a bit harsh but you can only call it as you find it. I arrived for a late lunch and the staff were run off their feet. It's one of those sort of 'pack em in' kinda places, perfectly good food and very polite service... but they're so rushed that you don't feel... More

I've been going here for the past 35 years and it is still the best Souvlaki in the world. Friendly waiters fast service, cold beer, what else could you want.

Whenever we're in Athens we always go to Thanasis as my husband and I really adore the souvlaki - special Thanasis. What better way to soak up the atmosphere than to sit and wait and wait and wait..for your order. This is really the down-side of Thanasis. As the food is so good, and not too expensive, if you have the... More

This restaurant first seemed to be a nice traditional greek restaurant. The swiftness of the order and the quality of the food reveals the facade and reveals a simple fast food joint with greek food. The service is nice and fast. The food is simple, but tasty. Typical greek dishes with simple drinks. The dining area is very brightly light... More

With its souvlakia, Greece has the best fast food in Europe and Thanassi makes the best ones around. Ask for either a pork or chicken filled pita bread accompanied by French fries and a Greek salad and you will be enjoying just about the tastiest and best value for money meal in Monastiraki.

Staying in Monastiraki

Neighbourhood Profile
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.
