The guy behind the bar was obviously very enthusiastic about the real ales & ciders, & it showed in the quality & range of both. This is the first time we have ever been in this pub & we were made extremely welcome along with our 2 friends. The food was decent pub grub at a reasonable price. We shall... More

called last minute after a day in garden. As always welcomed with a smile and hello. Clear menu to view quick service of drinks and the food of roast beef and roast turkey was not a a disappointment. Small touches of individual gravy pot and condiment and selection of seasonal vegetables. Desert was blackberry and apple crumble and again not... More

Takes some finding but well worth the effort, CAMRA Essex pub of the year 2016 which must mean something, well kept large range of draft beers and ciders and a wide range of freshly well prepared reasonably priced mostly local and imaginative food (not imaginary) with vegetarians well catered for. Obvious involvement in the local community and staff/management with a... More

We visited this lovely Pub 3 times. From a simple pint after work to a lovely lunch in the beer garden. The staff is very friendly, the food was very good (tried the lunch only). We enjoyed our time at The compasses.

18 of us eat at the compasses last night, 8/7/2016....what a fantastic evening! The staff were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much of a problem, and despite us being a 'loud' group we were made very welcome. We will definitely go back, thank you so much! The D'Arcy group.

As we live in the village we decided to Pop in for lunch to see if the pub was living up to its excellent reputation. I am pleased that it certainly exceeded expectations. The pub is one of the few locally which is dog friendly, so we will bring our hound next time we call in. Although not busy for... More

So lovely to go back here for another superb meal and quiz night. Food was excellent, tasty, pipping hot and plenty of it. Local beers a speciality too at decent price. Highly recommend a visit to this 'Essex pub of the year 2016' establishment.

We called in the other Saturday night, without a booking, and had a very good meal. The dining room was busy which meant that, as they say on the menu, there was a bit of time before our meal was served as it is cooked fresh. As they have a good selection of Essex ales that was no problem what... More
