Located on a quiet street in Old Town, this welcoming tavern style restaurant is in an old storage house part of which dates from 1500s. Menu is excellent with mostly Swedish fare. Good beer on tap and decent selection of wines. Food was very tasty and for Stockholm, quite reasonably priced. Service attentive and efficient. Highly recommended for a relaxing... More

Walking into this Gamla Stan restaurant is a visit to the past, as it's an old vault built in the 16th Century. It's medieval and tiny but utterly charming. At lunchtime, I was the first diner there, but things filled up rapidly after I arrived. My server was absolutely delightful, and the huge Caesar salad with chicken that I ordered... More

I tried the local meatballs and the ice cream with berries. Both were very tasty. I sat outside which was good for people watching. Interior has a very nice ambiance and it has a story from the past. The waitress who served me was great. But the two waiters, two young guys, should be taught to smile a bit. They... More

This is in Gamla Stan- the old town. it offers two or three set menus but also a variety of Swedish and other dishes. We had meatballs and grilled salmon. You could also get reindeer here. It does a great chocolate truffle too. Service was great. Everywhere in Stockholm is expensive to eat ( £16-£30 for a main course) and... More

Great place to have a beer... and then stay for awesome food. We stopped by for a beer after shopping, then noticed the dining area was located in an old vault built in the 1500s - great atmosphere. I loved my seafood casserole and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the Swedish Meatballs. Delicious and reasonably priced. Nice find. Not sure why... More

I went there with my parents (in their 60s) while visiting Stockholm. The place was really nice, it had a decent service and the food was very good. The food was well presented, very tasty and not too expensive for the location (Gamla Stan). We would definitely go back!

If you're looking for fine dining with a good selection of wines, this is is not the place. The glasses of wine we had with our main course (once the waiter had been reminded we'd ordered wine) were both poor examples of their type from a poor selection available. There did seem to be a good selection of different beers... More

Oh mercy our meal at Magnus Ladulas was so painfully slow. I won't drag you down with too many details about the service, but it shouldn't be that way. The guy was fairly friendly but inattentive in every imaginable way. The food was pretty good though I will say. I would not go back to this restaurant as overall it... More

My friend who lives in Stockholm visits here regularly - so naturally we had to check it out for ourselves. It is a smaller venue, but it is still perfect. The service was wonderful and they even had chargers for our phones which were going flat. They also have free wifi, which I am taking full advantage of to write... More

We stopped in here really because we'd been walking all day and were very hungry and in need of a WC. It was really cool inside, like a "cave" with lower set rounded brick ceiling. I got the beef sirloin which tasted so wonderful. The potatoes and other veggies were great too. My friend had a special -"black and white"... More

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
