This restaurant is a Stockholm institution. However - we felt not very welcome when we arrived (being 15 minutes early for our lunch reservation). But still... OK, people are busy. When we were finally seated it took another 15 minutes before we were aksed what we would like, no bread or water was served and then all of a sudden... More

I stumbled upon Den Gyldene by chance but from the second I walked in it charmed me with warmth and friendliness. The food was everything I expected and more. The best of all was the staff. They were welcoming and helpful. The food was served at a steady pace but at no rush. It was definitely one of the best... More

We visited Den Gyldene Freden and had a very nice dinner. We had the Classic Menu with Herring as a starter, meatballs as main and dessert. I must say that it's good Swedish traditional food, not very exciting or innovative but still great food. We will return.

A beautiful restaurant in Old Town. We had the Classic Swedish Cooking. Simply and heavenly delicious! Also, excellent service. I would definitely return to try their other dishes.

We were 12 colleagues, having a three course set menu. It was delicious. The wines were good too, picked with the assistance of the sommelier. It doesn't come cheap, but still good value, given the quality. There are many rooms downstairs, so it becomes a chambre separé-like atmosphere.

Food was delicious. I stuck with just meatballs and mash which were delicious. Husband went for the full Swedish with pickled herring! Food was excellent as was the service.

Traditional Swedish cousin prepared in modern interesting way with traditional Swedish ingredients but the most important is the history of the place there many brilliant swedes had spent their time. And the service was pleasant too.

When I want a bowl of perfectly cooked Swedish meatballs and mashed potatoes in a warm and cozy environment I head for this old establishment in Gamla Stan. Ask for one of the window tables in the ground floor dining room or go downstairs into the cave-like cellar. It is a popular place so book a table. Service can be... More

Beautiful historical decorations, the ambience and service made our dinner. However do not expect an extraordinary food-the starters were very good(especially the bread!!!),we didn't like the homemade sausage at all, meatball very quiet ordinary.

Thank Tatiana S

At Den Gyldene Freden we have served authentic Nordic home cooking since the opening in 1722. Famous cultural personalities, tourists and local regulars visit our historic facilities in Gamla Stan to enjoy the fine food and the genuine atmosphere - for everyday or special occasions. We, the people who work at Den Gyldene Freden are very proud of our heritage and passionate about refining classic courses into modern cooking. Our philosophy is based on the idea that one must make time to cook - and eat - fine food. We make room for international influences, but our base is the Nordic kitchen interpreted in our own personal manner, with great respect for flora and fauna.

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
