The location is great: it is a very beautiful and historical restaurant in Gamba Stan. Traditional Swedish food: all we’ve eaten was very good. Price in line with similar restaurant in the town. Service good. Reservation suggested. Recommended.

I had my 40th birthday here and it was just as special as one could hope. We were seated in the very cool underground room, with curving white walls, and a feeling of candlelight; but you could see very well. It was romantic with charm. The food was excellent and very classic. Beverage options were plentiful to compliment each course.... More

We choose this Place to be our Stockholm's main dinner - first we considered to book a Michelin starred Place - but we wanted eat traditional Swedish dishes , so after reading Michelin "bubblin' under" report and others we decided to choose this old town historic restaurant. Environment was historic and we're seated in really nice basement room. Staff was... More

It was our first time in Stockholm and seems like this place is a well-known and established favorite. Sometimes places like that can disappoint and rely on their reputation alone but we thought this was a superb restaurant with great service and food. We enjoyed sitting in the lower level cellar (as was recommended). The tartare was among the best... More

There's so much to say about Den Gyldene Frieden that I can't write it all in this post. The history and beauty of this building dating back centuries is brought out in the food, with traditional Dagens Lunches being the drawcard to such a fine establishment. The cost of the meal is nothing compared to the sheer experience of dining... More

Was eating traditional Swedish Christmas lunch for a couple of days ago. Important to make a reservation beforehand, when it is like now, just a few days before the Christmas. But really don't hesitate to try all Swedish Christmas special plates with herring and other foods. It is worth it according my opinion. I tastes the lunch, in the cellar-floor.... More

A traditional Restaurant in the old town of Stockholm full of character offering a range of excellent traditional Swedish dishes. The mai‧tre d' and the serving staff were excellent and helpful, offering a very good recommendation on wines, apart from a negative somewhat uncooperative bar person at the beginning, the visit was excellent and the dishes were good. Well worth... More

Our first restaurant upon arriving in Stockholm, upon the recommendation of the hotel staff at Collector's Victory Hotel. The restaurant had an underground cavern converted into a dining area, and a small room to store all the coats. As it was one of the highly recommended places to go, the tables were fully occupied when we arrived, although it was... More

My wife and I visited here last Monday on our first evening in Stockholm. It had been recommended by the receptionist at our hotel - the Lady Hamilton. Everything is close in Gamla Stan so despite being on the other side of Old Town the walk was no problem. It was before 6:00 p.m. when we arrived, but were asked... More

This restaurant is a Stockholm institution. However - we felt not very welcome when we arrived (being 15 minutes early for our lunch reservation). But still... OK, people are busy. When we were finally seated it took another 15 minutes before we were aksed what we would like, no bread or water was served and then all of a sudden... More

Description
At Den Gyldene Freden we have served authentic Nordic home cooking since the opening in 1722. Famous cultural personalities, tourists and local regulars visit our historic facilities in Gamla Stan to enjoy the fine food and the genuine atmosphere - for everyday or special occasions. We, the people who work at Den Gyldene Freden are very proud of our heritage and passionate about refining classic courses into modern cooking. Our philosophy is based on the idea that one must make time to cook - and eat - fine food. We make room for international influences, but our base is the Nordic kitchen interpreted in our own personal manner, with great respect for flora and fauna.

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
