First opened in 1722. There is history in the walls. Excellent food and staff. Worth a visit! Will definitely come back again!

A very cosy restaurant with a great historic background. The story benind it enchants you and you still find dishes in the menu from the original restaurant. Located in Gamla Stan in a charming street. Great service. Don't miss.

I just got back to my hotel from this restaurant and needed to write a review right away! I am from NYC and have amazing food all around - however this is a gem that can not be replicated anywhere in the world. Parts of the restaurant are from the original 1700s building and the decor gives it a romantic... More

We visited Den Gyldene Freden (The Golden Peace) when some friends came to stay with us in Stockholm for a traditional Swedish experience. It is known for being one of the most famous cellar restaurants in the old town. Much of the restaurant's original charm appears to have been preserved and it was a good atmosphere. The service was polite but... More

I have now been here 1 time each year the last 3 years. The atmosphere inside is kind of special, the oldest part of this restaurant is from 1722 (i think). Thick walls, old stairwells....quite charmeuse :). The food is good, and hopefully the waiter will give you a history lesson of the place where you are dining.

Allegedly the oldest restaurant in Stockholm and owned by the Swedish Academy. Amazing interior with super good food served in a traditional perfect polite manner. Not cheap, you wouldn't expect that but a unique experience.

I started with the blackened salmon which was absolutely fantastic. You had a great smoky flavor and very delicious. For of my entrée I had the seared cod. This cod was very thick piece and it was absolutely amazing! There's plenty of food as I am a growing boy and had plenty to eat. The wait staff was very knowledgeable... More

Situated in the Old Town, it serves traditional hearty swedish food. The food is fine but rather overprized. The restaurant is a historic building from 1722, and the interior bares the stamp of that time.

Went here with some friends that was visiting from diffrent countries to show of a very traditional place and food. We sat in the basement which felt like going back 100reds of years. The food was good and I can recommend the place.

We ate the dinner special last night which included a tiny salmon appetizer and a ribeye main course that was a fatty and unappetizing. The dessert was ok and the matching wine pairings were ok as well. The service was good and the setting was nice: a building from the the 1700's. I don't feel we got good value for... More

At Den Gyldene Freden we have served authentic Nordic home cooking since the opening in 1722. Famous cultural personalities, tourists and local regulars visit our historic facilities in Gamla Stan to enjoy the fine food and the genuine atmosphere - for everyday or special occasions. We, the people who work at Den Gyldene Freden are very proud of our heritage and passionate about refining classic courses into modern cooking. Our philosophy is based on the idea that one must make time to cook - and eat - fine food. We make room for international influences, but our base is the Nordic kitchen interpreted in our own personal manner, with great respect for flora and fauna.

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
