Skip the tourist traps and watch out for the signs for this wee gem - tucked away off the street and down some steep stone steps dating from 1320 into a set of 14 century cellars filled with local art works. Good range of baked potatoes, salads, quiches etc and usual drinks. Lovely warm reception from the owner. Really felt... More

If you are in the old town and looking for for the ideal place to have Fika (coffee and cake) then look for this cafe which is just off the main street but down some stairs to an underground cellar. Great atmosphere and very reasonable prices.

Today I went to this beautiful cafe for the first time. It is a beautiful place. However my wallet was stolen. It was in my bag and someone took it. So go there but take care of your personal belongings!

This subterranean restaurant in the touristy Gamlastan was quite the surprise. We just chose it because it was convenient and we were starving. I thought, since it was sort of bar style, that it would be mediocre, but actually, the food was fresh and delicious. It would be a place to linger, especially over coffee and dessert. The cave-like interior... More

While looking for somewhere to eat, we repeated the mantra "a few streets down, it will be cheaper", and sure enough, a sign saying "lunch, 85kr" caught our eye. We headed down the ally and noticed another set of tourists looking at it in bewilderment. To our surprise, through the heavy iron door were downwards stairs! We decided to go... More

A superb place! A real hidden gem. Although the service is slow it is really friendly with a good selection for "Fika." The surroundings are excellent to explore and well worth a visit for a coffee after being in the tourist crammed hubbub of the beautiful Gamla Stan. Escape the noise and beauty and just relax in the cavernous Cafe... More

This is actually a very good place because it is a little different from all the other cafes in Gamla Stan. It is under ground, and has very low ceilings and arches. It's a little chilly, and the fireplace is actually and old, tiny staircase with a log-lamp. The food is just fine, pies and pastas heated in a microwave... More

Had I not had my friend with me I would have missed this place! Very steep stairs, a bit dark and if you're tall keep your head down! Once you get inside if feels like you're in a cave. Groovy! I had the blueberry pie with ice coffee.

Great little cafe in the old town Stockholm, Vasterlanggatan 60, in the alley next to Michaelangelos. It's almost hidden from the street. You descend steep stairs to a cellar with arched brick ceilings. The charming owner told us that it had originally been a convent in 1325, then a wine cellar after a fire in 1624. Delicious lattes, little chocolate... More

We got here after stumbling upon a sign to get into the basement. A nice cafe in a wine-like cellar, except they serve nice coffee and sweets here. Also, for 40kr (about 3,70 euro) you get a delicous ham or shrimp salami half-size, and trust me, half-size is quite a big sandwich! We recommend sitting beside the (fake) fireplace, it... More

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
