The Hatch Inn is a real gem of a pub. Both the food and service was outstanding. To top it off, the Christmas decorations are beautiful.

Lacklustre welcome, choice of food narrowed by high prices - had to choose fish and chips which I would not normally have in a pub - other dishes too expensive - two mains plus one bottle of average Merlot cost £70 - too much !...This pub has lost it's friendly atmosphere over the years. I will think twice before coming again.More
Hello, we are disappointed to read your review in light of all others whereby you suggest that our food offering is expensive. I would appreciate to learn where are you comparing us with?. Our prices reflect the quality of food offered to our discerning clientele....More
Visit on a Saturday evening with 10 of us and the service was brilliant - friendly and quick. The food was outstanding, great range of options for both adults and children. Will definitely return.
I had lunch with my family and although it was extremely busy the service from Nickie and the team was excellent. The food delicious we all had different dishes but I had the liver and bacon which was perfect can’t wait till my next visit
WOW. Just wow. Just had the best lunch we have had for ages! The most wonderful seafood and liver and bacon. Cooked to perfection, absolutely delicious and the owner and the lovely waitress were so friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting...the Ashdown Forest.More
A great country pub with amazing food, atmosphere, Guinness and whiskey. Never had a bad meal here. Staff are amazing
We had Sunday lunch a few weeks ago which was really nice, so we thought tonight would be a good call. We’re fairly local and funnily enough, a local friend asked me to let her know what it was like, as it seemed the food...was good some days and awful on others! (Chef difference maybe?) Anyway, sorry to say we clearly hit an ‘awful’ day. Goats cheese starter tasteless. Liver parfait with accompanying crouton type bread that I’m surprised didn’t break someone’s teeth! Then to the mains. The hake was good, but the mushroom was again, tasteless. The fish and chips were fried to within an inch of its life. Really greasy and over cooked. We all decided against deserts as we’d had enough. Being my brothers 50th, I’d made a cake and was outside with my sister in law adding candles before bringing in. A member of staff came outside to tell us there was a ‘cakeage’ charge of £3 per head if we wanted to eat any of it there! Not something I’d ever heard of before and I’ve been making cakes for birthdays for years. I was informed it was ‘because we obviously wouldn’t be having puddings’! We decided not to eat ANY cake there and won’t be returning again, either. Really spoilt what should have been a special evening.More
Booked the previous week, whilst out on a walk, and included this as a water stop. Returned the following Sunday and had a wonderful roast chicken followed by fabulous deserts. They catered for our Gluten Free and Dairy Intolerance brilliantly, and we will definitely return....May even have to elevate it to a regular haunt as they carry Timothy Taylor Landlord amongst their beer line upMore
Food was good and prompt service but just felt very unwelcoming and that we should be grateful to be there. Just one member of staff smiled and no interaction from anyone else that served us. Lets the pub down.
The word Dire comes to mind. An overpriced clique for the locals ( without tastebuds) Whilst sat enjoying the heady aroma of raw sewage were served weak starters with grand names followed by a burger ( £18.50) that was a few steps from being jerky!...Frenetic staff achieving rather little almost made the experience amusing. Clearly a place with big ideas yet no knowledge of how to achieve them. What would once have been a charming building ( 1430) with a less charming later chimney addition was incredibly badly arranged as an eatery. This is a pub, and I believe that’s where we ought to leave it, pea shoots and all. Overall very disappointing and frankly a waste of ingredients. ‘Be more pub!’ Crisps and perhaps nuts at most.More
Haven’t eaten here for years and it didn’t disappoint! We were made to feel extremely welcome by Nickie and Will who were fantastic the whole evening. The food was absolutely amazingly delicious. I had the hake which was honestly one of the best dishes I’ve...ever eaten, one of those dishes you don’t want to end. I was told the fish and chips was the best fish and chips they had ever eaten! Needless to say there were 5 spotless plates at the end! Thank you Team Hatch Inn, we’ll definitely be back!More
Very disappointing, had just moved into area and were hoping to have a good local restaurant on the doorstep. We had the Sunday roast, well the Yorkshire puddings were as hard and may have been good 2 hours before. The roast potatoes were not cooked...and uncuttable, the veg reminded me of school dinners. The food took an age to arrive, I made a comment to the manager a lady called Nikki and all she commented was This is the hatch, it’s worth waiting for. I can assure you it wasn’t After our meal I looked at some of the Trip Advisor reviews and noticed the owner, a gentleman called Nick not only went through his CCTV in an attempt to discredit reviews but also made downright insulting insinuations. Just for the record I completed Trusthouse Forte Gastronomique program in the 1980s and my wife has a diploma from Cordon Bleu in Marylebone, so we should know our onions! Very sad as ha e not been back. Now wait for the excuses from the managementMore
Good morning Tom, firstly, I am somewhat surprised that you have waited since September 2022 to review your visit to us and secondly that this review falls inline with another damming review from yourself just a week ago on our main social media review platform,...More
I've lived in the area almost 20 years and this was my first visit!! Hadn't booked but was offered a choice of tables inside - however it was a warm day so we chose to eat outside. Landlord is super friendly and helpful. My friend...and I both chose from the specials board and had the same Thai red curry. So yummy. In all a lovely quaint country pub with plenty of outside space. Will be back 😊More
Excellent place on the edge of the forest to stop for Sunday lunch. Friendly staff , tasty food , all in all a very pleasant afternoon.
