Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was my second visit to Vienna, and second trip to this restaurant. And, it was everything I remember so fondly. The food is traditional as is the atmosphere--and it is all as it should be. Its a great meal. FYI--the neighborhood is becoming more...bustling, there is no smoking in there restaurant now (which is great).More

Everything perfect till one of the waitress sarcastically blamed on me because I rounded up of 10cents the bill. Even though they are 10cents, it's money for free I am giving you. Next time, don't even ask if I want to tip, you make a...better figure. This is not how a costumer should be treated. Shade!More

The waitress was rather estounded than sarcastic. Tip is your appriciation, you start your review with "everathing perfect". Your criticism is at least disproportionate.

Had the boiled beef, lamb and meatballs. All were pretty good but not sensational. Well cooked food with decent flavour. Service was ok too not bad but not over the top good. Overall worth a visit if you are in the area.

The atmosphere was old and authentic. The food was perfect, except the salad that looked like a soup. Priced mid-range. The drawback was you can smoke inside. As a smoker I didn't want to bother other visitors and walked outside to have one.

Wow - what a great great place!! We were in Vienna in May 2019 for four days and were strolling by and thought "let's grab supper here" (it was around 8:00 PM). We were surprised to learn that the place was packed and without reservations...it would be about 90 minutes before a table for three opened (this was mid-week!). Well, we were too hungry to wait but made reservations for the next day, and thank goodness we did! What an amazing restaurant!! The atmosphere was great and very cozy (it is a family business that expanded over the years so there are about five 'areas' that expand as you go deeper inside, they seem to sit about 6 tables per area). Our meals were tremendous and the staff so friendly! We had starters, mains, desserts, ample wine (plus after-dinner drinks!) all ending in a shockingly reasonable price! We enjoyed ourselves so much we made reservations for a few days later to end our trip before heading to Prague. I can only promise you that this is an amazing place and is always full (we love supporting family businesses) but do make reservations (phone or otherwise) and I am positive you will not be disappointed!More

Saw this place on a wee travel blog and searched it out. The pluses were that the food was delicious, hot red beet soup which was fantastic and boiled beef with potato hash and Apple. Both dishes were lovely. The minuses, the place opens at...6 but kitchen opens at 7, there is a smoking area at the front which you have to get through for non-smoking area. The area at the rear was a bit grubby, marks on table cloth and lighting was a bit dingy. We were the only ones in their initially at the place was lacking in atmosphere. The main waitress was a bit arsey and wouldn't let us order food until 7 so we nursed our beer for bit.More

Eating here felt like going back in time - we drank beer and ate basic but tasty food by candlelight. Arriving late, 1030 after the opera, we just made last orders for the kitchen on a cold, wet wintery Monday night. We cosied in with...a couple of huge beers and waited for our food. A group of twentysomething locals saved us from being the only people in the place and it was atmospheric but quiet. In the candlelight it was difficult to tell which dish was duck and which was deer...both were served with decent roasties and boiled veg. Both meats were a little over but served with sauces that both packed a punch in terms of richness. We were happy just be fed so heartily so late at night but I'm not sure we'd go back. I'm sure we'd have whiled away the evening there with more beers if we'd been earlier and it did have a certain amount of authentic but dare I say it, grubby charm...if you're on the Bourdain trail in Vienna, we had a much better time at Urbanek at the Naschtmarkt.More

Cheap and tasty traditional Austrian dishes and good wines and beer. Unfortunately the place is old, dark and you come out smelling strongly of cooking fat.

The reviews for this restaurant persuaded me to go with my family and to be honest the service was good and the food was tasty. For some reason though we were taken into a back room to eat rather than kept in the front (having...turned down the option of eating on the roadside) which meant there was absolutely no atmosphere and a really dreadful damp, cloying smell. The music was dreary, the place was basic and it felt heavy and cloying. I just couldn't wait to leave and get out into the fresh air. It was like eating in a damp cellar. i absolutely loathed it and the food did not make up for the awful atmosphere and ambiance.More

I had dinner with friends here and it was realy interesting. All of us were realy happy with food, and overall atmosphere, interior desing and decoration was also great part of experience. Meel I had was very good, but what impressed me most was the...desert, Kaiserschmarrn and something apparently simillar to this (but not the same, different treatment of dough) both with different kinds of jelly... Now, downsides to this place are slow service and that is what you have to expect, and that I think smoking is allowed everywhere, so there is not actual smoking corner or something, but it is everywhere. Thing is, I do smoke moderately, even not at all at times, but generaly I am not radical against this if this is in decent measure... Here it was a bit too much even for me who smokes couple of cigarets per day...More

Two kinds of people eat here - locals, and tourists following in the footsteps of Bourdain. We're in the latter group (although hopefully a little cooler than the Canadian tourists who showed up after us in a large group without reservations loudly proclaiming RIP Bourdain)....We chose to eat inside and were glad we did - the sidewalk tables are nice, but the inside is just dripping with atmosphere, the kind that takes years to create. The server (just one for the entire restaurant), was insanely efficient, but you still may have to wait longer than you would like. Just relax, have another Sturm, and soak up the atmosphere. As for the food, our opening veal tongue salad was light, lively, and delicious, and my wife's meatballs with cheesy mash were solid, affordable comfortable food. My veal with porcini mushrooms was a bit dry and overcooked, but the sauce was deep and intense and I ate more of the potatoes than I thought I would just to soak up more of the sauce. We're so glad we came here, but just know what you're getting into. Yes, Austrians smoke more than we are used to - you're visiting, so don't complain about it. And don't talk about how dirty or divey the place is - chance are, there are some great places in your hometown that are much worse. It's clear to us that a lot of pride and hard work goes into the place, and we're honored to be on the receiving end of that effort.More

Saw this on a web page and decided to try. Doesn’t look much from outside and once inside you could be eating and drinking like folks did back 50-60 years ago. Food was wholesome, and tasty, service was pleasant and prices reasonable. Enjoyed meatballs and...mash. Try it it’s different but worth the effort.More

This place has a great atmosphere and cozy decoration. The food is good, typical austrian fare of good quality, nothing spectacular but it’s OK. But the service has to be one of the slowest on earth: 15 minutes to take orders plus 35 minutes to...prepare a Wiener Schnitzel. It was a fairly good one, but it’s just way too long to wait for your food to arrive. And the place was not even full, it was actually half-empty. Come here only if you have time to spare and are not too hungry!!More
