We try to visit this restaurant when we are in Vienna to get our Czech food treat. It is small, but great atmosphere. We enjoyed the liver dumpling and garlic soups. The pork, dumpling, and sauerkraut is very tasty. Czech beer is available. And Palinky are there for dessert if you have room! Or end the meal with bechorovka.

We walked in with a baby, not knowing what to expect. The high chair was not in excellent condition, but as soon as our food was served, the owner picked up the baby and walked him around the restaurant til one of us was finished eating! Very friendly and accommodating service. And the food was excellent. I had "Grandfather's 3-legged... More

We read the other trip advisor reviews about this restaurant and tried to go our first night in town, a Sunday, but it was closed. We went back Monday night and we're not disappointed. We walked in, early for European standards, and were welcomed and offered a table towards the back. Our fist impression was warm, but we we still... More

A restaurant tucked away in the Vienna back streets which is well worth looking for. Traditional Austrian Faye is on the menu -try the potato cakes for a start. Very reasonably priced and very good service.

We ate here on the basis of TripAdvisor reviews. Arriving without a booking, we were seated immediately. We both chose from the seasonal menu and had a delicious venison ragout. The atmosphere was relaxed and traditional, the restaurant being far enough from the centre to not be too thronged with tourists.

Went here on our first night in Vienna due to tripadvisor reviews and wasn't disappointed. Good homely cooking in a cosy atmosphere which was free of smoke. Staff were great to my pregnant wife and I despite our poor attempt at German. They deserve your custom.

Excellent down-to-earth food from times when Bohemia (nowadays the Czech Republic) was part of the old Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. But beware: this is not a modern gourmet-temple, you get simple cooking from past times, all in all rather heavy and fat instead of healthy. But that's the spirit of this Restaurant, which you'll also see in the very traditional, old, sometimes... More

Great place, the interior takes you back in history. I had the specialty 'puffen', which was really heavy on garlic, very strong although I am a fan of garlic. The local beer was also very good. I would have given an extra tip if they told be beforehand that 1 salty pretzel was 1 euro mmh... al in al nice... More

Staying in Josefstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
Josefstadt
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.
