We spotted this little cafe just off the main shopping street. Had coffee and apple strudel at a very reasonable price. Very relaxed and seemed to be used by the locals which is always a good sign.

Really cool and peacefull place with Central European atmosphere. I just loooved the sound of wooden floor, sounds just like the one my grandmother had in old Austro-Hungarian building in Sarajevo, Bosnia&Herzegovina. Chairs also authentic, wooden. Smoking allowed in the whole cafe. Very good and kind service, espresso coffe good. Price range very acceptable, espresso with cold milk only 1.9... More

When I travel I look for local people and places that are not crowded by tourists. I was lucky to see this café during my 1 night stop in Vienna. The prices are just right (payed 9 euros for falafel with vegetables and a bottle of beer). Was there at 9pm and it was full of people reading books and... More

Urgent late breakfast stop, and wanted to avoid big chain shops in Mariahilferstrasse. Just down a side street, this very small & original place. Not the standard Fruhstuck options; I had a refreshing cheese, olive and bread plate with superb Melange. Very friendly service, happy & unrushed. If you like "individual", this is a great little stop.

Nice cosy coffee place just off mariahilfe strasse. The perfect place after a long stroll around the city centre. Low lights and old relaxing music. Excellent service and a perfect spot for wifi and reading a book

The Kafka is a peaceful little café that's really easy to find and access. The staff is really friendly and the whole place is just filled with lovely, talkative people. The food is nothing special it's simple and affordable, don't expect any culinary miracles but the atmosphere is very soothing and cozy. They alwaly play pretty good alternative music. However,... Cafe Kafka attracted us because we were trying to find something authentic in Vienna, where often the tourist traps rob the cafes of any character. This cafe however is full of character and characters- expect local students and arty types and lovely tea and coffee, wine and beer. We went for a post dinner drink, perfect after visiting the Schiele... More

Staying in Mariahilf

Neighbourhood Profile
Vienna’s sixth district hosts high street shopping heaven and pedestrian area Mariahilfer Strasse. The weirdest local building is probably the city aquarium Haus des Meeres, housed in one of Vienna’s six remaining World War II defense towers, and topped with a rooftop bar that offers stunning views over Vienna and the centre. One of the most historic sites in the area is the passageway of 18th century Raimundhof with its small shops and cafés. It leads from Mariahilfer Strasse to Windmühlgasse. For a glimpse into the world of early 19th century theater, visit Semperdepot, the former depository for theatre decoration, which now hosts art exhibitions and fairs.
